A long six months ahead

150

One of the primary consequences of our elimination from the Champions League this week is the dearth of equivalent competition between now and when it all gets a bit serious with Champions League qualifiers in August.

This is not to say we are going to win at Easter Road on Saturday, a reversal would not be a surprise, but on-form Hibernian are never going to prepare us for challenges in Europe.  There is some value in games against Newco, who remain in the Europa League.  They could have helped the cause more by remaining in the Scottish Cup long enough to face a proper challenge.  As it is, we only have two games against them before September.

The demands which Brendan Rodgers recently referred to Arne Engels facing will drop.  The need to rotate the squad diminishes, which results in fewer opportunities for fringe players to develop.

This is shaping up to be another historic season for Celtic, but being so far ahead in the league and out of Europe will affect also commercial revenue streams.  It could be a long six months until the third week in August.  First World problems, eh?

  1. HANKRAY @ 6:25 PM,

Yeah, I remember Shay (too wee) Given, brilliant keeper, him and Stan would have been a great watch, so maybe owe Premier an apology.

Glad you enjoyed the coverage, definitely a historic game.

    Hail Hail

I hope I get released before you or you get out before me as the company is ripping my knitting.

  3. AULDHEID @ 8:40 PM,

Well I would certainly agree with that, it was good decision making in the end.

By luck I meant the Board didn’t get their way.

Think DD stepping in and with him and the executive negotiating for Brendan Rodgers to come back was inspired.

Then allowing Brendan Rodgers to take more of an input in recruitment from January 2024 was also a great decision.

Maybe more judgement than luck, that the old guard didn’t get their way.

    Hail Hail

  4. BURNLEY78 @ 9:19 PM,

Your attempts to minimise BR&CO and the teams achievements this season is now desperate stuff.

Eight teams went out at this stage of the UCL, they were…

AC Milan, Atalanta, Brest, Celtic, Juve, Manchester City, Monaco, Sporting Lisbon

Considering we got the not so easy draw of Bayern Munich, we did excellently.

As for the nonsense about getting a better draw with one more point, I did not see you predicting PSV were going to beat Liverpool and change the order of the draw completely.

    Hail Hail

  5. Sargossa

I played in same team as Billy Carrol and Willie Fox before the Boydstone days. It was in afternoon so probably the tougher league.

I took time away for a while and when I came back was nominated manager of Boydstone who only had 12cplayers including me on being oldest over 30.

BSP was in that offshoot lineup although already with the main team to which he returned after first 11 0 pounding.

I tease him about that as Boydstone reached top divisions of CSL in season 3.

Arthur Tinney ? was manager of team I played in that Billy, Willie and Frank McAleer played in that won The Walter Elliot Trophy at Ashfield Juniors ground.

  6. Chairbhoy

Yup. I see DD intervention as inspired and PL narrative changing as in him having control still.

A narrative some cling to given any chance to fault BR for God knows what reason.

  7. AULDHEID @ 10:10 PM,

Yes, we seem to be going forward with a great deal of momentum now, obviously it would be great if everyone was on the same page, but has that ever happened?

All the best with the health issues – thoughts and prayers are with you.

You are aware that from our “easy group” only three failed to get into the last 24.

Moreover three teams are still in the last 16 🙃

  9. So we want Sevco still in Scottish Cup to provide a sterner test , ie maybe knock us out , gloat, win it themselves; while derailing a treble .

    That doesn’t make any sense.

Why not just enjoy rest of season and hopefully 2 more trophies.

  10. Still absolutely gutted. Proud but totally gutted. Its been a very, very long time since my insides felt like this .

I know European football refreshes the parts that domestic football cannot. I feel it.

What a brilliant night it was. From the excellent pre match build up to the game itself.. indeed it was prime time viewing

I want more of that. The best and biggest show in town. We belong.

BR is a professional and will motivate his team for the visit to Edinburgh.

We need to win the league , not for the glory, the thrill, a possible treble or for statistics.

But for the prize of European participation. A prize that we have neglected for far too long.

    Until now.

    HH, the journey continues.

    AT,

So,Brendan can’t be a good manager, send a message to the Board, and keep the team up to scratch for the rest of the season?.

    That what your saying?.

I know you have some mates on here ,but I don’t know you from Adam.Nevertheless, you like to dig up most of my posts, and take a bit of effort in doing so,then write a whole load of, frankly, some version of gobbeldegook English, trying to be a smartass.Totally failing.

To me,you jet come across as an Asshole..

    ====================================

Ah the beetlejuiceheid comes to the fore again, mixed with some self analysis in your last line

Dont give me the “is that what your saying” pash

You are trying to suit all opinion at the same time but failing like an amateur sports reporter,as thats what you come across as.

You evaded/avoided and slithered away from answering Clunks question to you on the night of the 1st leg that of – Did you think BR was sending a message to the board with his tactical picks in the 1st leg,a complete flip.

I have complete confidence in BR,always have,he knows what he is doing and a few(after Atalanta esp) are so suprised at the way we learned and adapted after Dortmund that there was disappointment with draws vs Brugge & Zagreb)

Brendan learns you dont thankfully Its BR that counts.

“Digging up your posts- spoken like a true 1st year pupil….must do better!

At least this post is about Celtic and not from your range of “whit urr the huns daen ff/rm shoite. I am only highlighting you sayin 2 opposites at once.

You be good TB,keep posting bout Celtic dont be miffed if folk question your view, your still a tim,

Maybe you should lighten up on ff/rm visits as you dont get uniform opinion here as you do there, where they nodded themselves into oblivion.

    If you are looking in.

Remember the first Boydstone football picture you were in?

Do you still have the picture?

I remember Frank Conway in goal who, when defending, came out and clattered anyone in his way.

Andy Cottingham at CH. George Gray, Brian Roussin and Peter Grady in midfield ,

Joe Kennedy, myself and Ponsonby up front.

Kenny Dalglish’s girlfriend worked there for a while as well. But he didn’t play for us !!!!!

  13. There are so many folk on here talking shite. it’s called the champions league for a reason. Out of 8 games one was straight forward. We got to play off round and kept that tie goimg until the very last kick of the ball from the german champions elect.

We would all prefer to have got through, to had got more points etc, but richer clubs than us would have been thankful to reach our points tally. Focus now turns to the league and the if we do the job correct the aug qualifier.

Right now we have a good team. Adding KT will improve leftback a hell of a lot. Another leftback is also needed. It’s very important we get a good quality winger/ striker and another centremid. All of the new additions will need to be physically imposing, pacey, movile and full of energy. A minimum of 3 player on top ok KT.

Only see us getting the 4 or 5 players if we can generate enough from player sale. I can see another end of season clear out. Taylor, Montgomery, Nawrocki, Welsh, Lagerbielke, palma, Kwon Hyeok-kyu, Summer, Anderson, Tilio, Holm, bain and cummings etc. Might even get a sizable sell on fee from frimpong as well.

  14. Sargossosea.

I played in that team too but I cannot remember who you are as my memory of who else was in it is not what it was.

Put me out of my brain fog misery and fess up.

  15. Sargossasea.

Joe Kennedy and I go way back as Calton boys. Joe was in my sisters class at school.

    We were close.

Brian Rousins wife was related to Jim Brogan of Celtic. They used to go to St Mary’s Calton dance on a Sunday.

    Memories eh?

  16. Majestic Hartson on

    Aukdheid,

Did you know a Jim McKenzie who went to St Mary’s dance?

He ran the team Tommy Burns played in and I think Jim Brogan too.

  17. Fcuking ads.. as I was saying before being so rudely interrupted. The question is what can BR do between now and his inevitable departure.

The summer acquisitions and departures will determine the legacy BR leaves for our future manager.

I’m confident BR will do this. Hopefully the new Jesuit Catholic owned Sevco a la Rangers will provide the necessary competition to set our sights higher.

    I was sent this.

Brilliant post on The Herald opinion page:

Is your football club skint? Tick

Are you struggling to find the money to pay your bills? Tick

Is your domestic season over in February? Tick

Did you recently suffer the worst result in your short but hilarious history? Tick

Are your supporters tired of being constantly ridiculed by their most hated rivals? Tick

Is your manager a clown but you can’t afford to pay him off? Tick

Are you expecting Hector at the front door again looking for the R&D money back? Tick

Do you have to start finding £4.5 million to pay for Oscar Cortes in the months ahead? Tick

Are you about to ask your fanbase to fork out hundreds of pounds for another season of the same old p1sh? Tick

Do you need to find a reason to pull the wool over their eyes yet again? Tick

We’ve got the perfect solution. Make up some hilarious story about more people with wealth off the radar who are desperate to pump millions of pounds into your tribute act of a club. Feed it to all your compliant gimps in the media. All your brain-dead gullible fans will buy into it, give you all their money, then in the summer you can give them the bad news that the deal has fallen through at the last minute for some unknown mysterious reason. It’s almost season book renewal time at Sevco folks!!!

Re the Bayern game – I was told yesterday that, if a second leg goes to extra time? …

… the score after 120 minutes, not 90, is used for coefficient points calculation.

    This I did not know.

    Doesn’t seem fair to me.

Bayern win narrowly in Glasgow and pick up 2 points.

If we had won narrowly in Munich and teams couldn’t be separated it would have gone to ET … which we might have lost and ended up with zero points?

  22. The Blogger Formerly Known As GM on

Seems King is to be replaced by a “kingpin” 😂

I’d love to know the terms of this deal – is it seen by the acquirers as a genuine opportunity or a chance to pick up distressed assets in a fire-sale from peepul who simply want to cut their loses?
