A money blog: CL, FX, Brendan effect, commercial deals

644

The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:

Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates

Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.

I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.

The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.

We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.

Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.

No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.

We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.

Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

It was actually over the last 5 years; one justification I heard was that it saved money. The rationale was that a big surveillance operation would cost £40K. That’s 550 big surveillance operations – thats one every 3 or 4 days! Or maybe around 100 more beat officers?

Still seems a lot to me!

I really think the class war has moved on. The old set up left and right wing as we know it has evolved. Of course there are still social justice and equality issues to address but the labels have gone. IMO of course.

As for the Labour movement , my own union ,Unite ( The biggest i the U.K. ) is having a leadership contest. One of the main participants is contesting on the basis that the union has become too focused on national party politics rather than the interests of its members.

Too true. To many union members this attitude is a breath of fresh air and a reality check.

Anyway for democracy, I hope the winner has a better percentage < 10% of the membership.

I remember reading all this 10iar shit the 2003/2004 season when we had impostors like Capucho, Ostenstaad etc in a team that lost the league by a mile and lost every old firm game that season. The next season we won the league and the outlay to bring in Prso, Novo, Boumsong, Andrews and Rae – which transformed that team – was very minimal.

We don’t need to have more money or even necessarily be better than them.

We just need to be better than the rest, if we do that then – it comes down to 4 old firm games which can go either way.

We’ll win the league next season or the one after.

  14. Provan is paid to voice his opinion and create stories on days when there are none. His stuff on BR and KT isn’t anti-Celtic (not saying he himself is or isn’t), it’s just stating the obvious.

A manager or a player does really well for 2-3 seasons then he’ll get job offers to move. It’s the same all over the world. If the offer is to a bigger, richer club then the move almost always happen.

Even managers and players who are at the pinnacle of the game, where getting more money would appear irrelevant, seem incapable of resisting a big move to take on a new challenge. Maybe it’s human nature.

If one day BR gets a job offer from Chelsea, Man Utd. Arsenal or City then Provan will probably be proven right. It’s hardly rocket science. He will get itchy feet at some point, we all do. In the meantime, we enjoy the ride. At the moment I think it is safe to assume he is ours for a while yet, he has a masterplan for Celtic and that will keep him challenged for 3 years or so.

If miraculously we are invited into a different league (English or European) where he would then already be at one of the top European teams – why would he move? He fits us the same way Ferguson fitted United and Wenger fits/fitted Arsenal. No need to move when you can achieve all of your ambitions where you are.

Meanwhile let the MSM and Sky try to create stories out of nothing. Can’t remember them trying to get Sir Walter out the door when chasing 9-in-a-row. They are terrified of the level of domination that is looming over them and clearly BR is now seen as the key to that.

I got that track on one of those ugly two albums as one CDs – Woman Is Sweeter/Shapes of Rhythm – about 10 years ago after I’d heard it as I loitered in a clothes shop I always go to when I’m back in Belfast.

The guys who run it would have been at the same gigs that I went to when younger and it’s good to know that proper choons mean as much to them now as it did then.

Class , to me , is an old fashioned label which now has little if any meaning.

Wealth , imho , is the criterion which now determines status.

    For some.

Interesting to think that the seemingly unbreakable link between Unions and the Labour party is now under threat.

Perhaps because the clout of the Labour party itself is under threat.

    The Jeremy factor.
