A money blog: CL, FX, Brendan effect, commercial deals

644

The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:

Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates

Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.

I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.

The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.

We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.

Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.

capture-20170207-120456

No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.

We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.

Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

<This is a rant, not about Celtic or football, so scroll by if you don't want to read.

I must admit to being astonished at the barefaced arrogance and paternalism of those who condemn the “economic illiterates” who didn’t happen to agree with their stance on Europe; akin to the way Exit voters were (and are) treated after the 2014 referendum: especially by those who want an independent Scotland IN Europe.

Also the sweeping generalisation that the almost total majority or Exit voters in the EC referendum are assumed to have voted to leave based upon immigration (and by implication covert racism).

How hard is it to credit a great many people with the ability to analyse the arguments and make an informed judgement and vote accordingly? Or does that only apply when people agree with what is held by the critics to be the “correct” choice; i.e. their choice?

Much the same as the American voting system is being criticised because the current President never won the popular vote? No Government in Britain has been elected since 1945 while winning the popular vote if you tale 50% as being the marker of the majority of the popular vote. The closest has been the Conservative Government of 1955 with 49.74% of the vote!

Bottom line is that democracy is flawed but, IMHO, it’s better than the alternatives. We are part of the UK; the majority of those who voted in the 2014 Independence Referendum voted to remain as part of it. The majority of voters who voted in the EC referendum in 2016 voted to leave.

Irrespective of ones own personal opinion and the rights or wrongs of either argument, the will of the people should be respected.

Or does that only apply when you get the rest you want!

    Rant over!

Naw. Wrang. It was based on racist anti-immigration lies by people who certainly didnae GAF about the people affected by immigration.

  4. Eurochamps,I know the eyesore,of derelict land at the corner of Springfield Rd and London Rd,I’m sure a hotel was earmarked for there, but they found out it was contaminated, which I think is a lie,who owns that piece of land, as for our club buying quite a lot of land in and around the Stadium, they need to do what they have done in Janefield St ,build more car parks, probably at a cost ,

    BMCUWP I disagree.

There is a certain level of ignorance in every democratic process. An element of that may have been around immigration and, to an extent, racism in the EC referendum.

However to simply tar the majority as economic illiterates or closer racists is lazy. What I’d expect from the MSM, not reasonably educated people on here: you included mucker.

    ###

I fear you may have misunderstood the argument.

In a two horse race, which is what the American presidential race was, to all intents and purposes, it is perverse for the winner to be the candidate who gained fewer votes than the losing candidate.

That’s an entirely different thing to saying the winner should have to secure a majority of the available votes.

Regarding Brexit, I would argue, as I did with the independence referendum, that there should be two stages. The first on the principle, the second on the detailed, settlement package.

Who know how many were persuaded to vote for Brexit thinking there was going to be an additional £350 a week for the NHS?

It was on the side of a bus for FFS.

    In big, bold letters.

You can’t get any clearer than that.

And then there’s the question of bananas. In Lidl. Or it might have been Aldi. It doesn’t matter, but it was definitely one of the German ones. They do a very nice supermarket, the Germans do. Anyway, where was I? I don’t know. Anyway. Brexit means Brexit.

  11. BMCUW @ 2:20 PM,

Well, you’re correct, bad timing from Alister Darling but for me New Labour had no idea how to deal with the Financial Collapse… Northern Rock????

“Mibbe sometimes politicians need to take a step back from ideology and think for a change.

    Not holding my breath though

Well IMO you’d be correct in not holding your breath. The Tories are all about ideology and the top ten percent. The Financial Collapse was a God Send for them.

They managed to divert the blame away from the causes… monetaryism and the financial institutions.

Then their solution, Reduce Government spending, by making Government smaller.

Closing Libraries while pumping money into the failed financial institutions. Who does that work for?

    Government is smaller….

Firstly and waaaaay most importantly, it’s vital to keep any debates among feiiow Celtic supporters civil.

It’s way too simplistic to categorize all Brexit voters as economically illiterate, directed by what’s written on a bus or racist. It’s a slur that some may say is made by the more educated, privileged elite establishment. From both the outdated left and right.

For example, I don’t believe for a minute that the hardworking fisherman from Banff and Buchan voted for anything bar protection of their industry.

The only way Scotland could have achieved independence and remaining in the EU was by giving up the fishing rights straight back to The Common Fisheries Policy.
