A money blog: CL, FX, Brendan effect, commercial deals

644

The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:

Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates

Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.

I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.

The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.

We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.

Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.

capture-20170207-120456

No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.

We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.

Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

The only way Scotland could have achieved independence and remaining in the EU was by giving up the fishing rights straight back to The Common Fisheries Policy.

    Amongst other little caveats,of course…

They wouldn’t have been voting for change, they would have been voting for more of the same, but with a much smaller clout.

What I want to know is. Where the Friar Tuck are the Darlings, Browns and Murphys who in 2014 were telling us that the only way to guarantee Scotland staying in Europe was to Vote NO.

Maybe Paul could get Jim the Tim at least, to come on here and explain why, having Voted NO we are now heading out of Europe Tout Suite and Duly Quick?

    Interesting analysis, Paul.

I have thought for a while we could be doing much better with our commercial deals, given the size of the club and its global reach.

Bayern excel in this area and is one of the main reasons they can compete with the big English and Spanish clubs who get more TV money.

Hopefully things will continue to improve here.

I think the likes of Trump and Farage are self evident cases for a more informed electorate, but who decides what information to pass on and how do those who decide arrive at that position and their conclusions? What is their thinking?

There is definitely a case for much better education in how to think as opposed to what to think.

Teach folk to question and challenge accepted doctrine, not be ruled by it.

Our brains are the most important “muscle” we have and education should exercise them.

  11. Celtic are set for another €7.15m from Uefa for this season’s Champions League campaign after the payment schedule for the competition was revealed.

The Scottish champions published their interim report on Monday, announcing a pre-tax profit of £18.6m that was in part down to participation in Europe’s elite competition.

Those figures covered the six months up to December 31 but STV has learned Celtic are still due a final payment from European football’s governing body.

All Champions League clubs will receive the second half of their television money on June 9, meaning Celtic can count on another €7.15m, £6.2m at today’s exchange rate, despite having exited the competition at the group stage.

That will bring Celtic’s earnings from this season’s competition to €30.5m.

Brendan Rodgers’ side reached the group stage by coming through qualifiers against Lincoln Red Imps, Astana and Hapoel Be’er Sheva with the final tie earning them €2m as play-off winners.

Playing against Barcelona, Manchester City and Borussia Monchengladbach in the group earned €12.7m just for taking part. Three draws, twice against Pep Guardiola’s men and once against Borussia, brought a further €1.5m as a performance bonus.

Those payments, along with half of the television money (€7.15m) were made before the end of 2016. The remaining 50% of the market pool for broadcast will be paid on June 16.

    Celtic’s Champions League earnings

    Play-off participation – €2m

    Group stage participation – €12.7m

  15. From BBC

The liquidators of Rangers Football Club plc have launched a multi-million pound legal action against the company’s former administrators.

The claim has been lodged by BDO against Paul Clark and David Whitehouse of accountancy firm Duff & Phelps at Edinburgh’s Court of Session.

BDO are seeking up to £28.9m following Clark and Whitehouse’s handling of the administration process.

Rangers entered administration in February 2012.

Four months later, the company’s business and assets were sold to a consortium led by Charles Green for £5.5m.

BDO were then appointed as liquidators, and have since conducted a review of the events leading up to administration through to the sale of the assets.

    ‘No other option’

In November 2014, BDO agreed a settlement for £24m in a claim against Collyer Bristow, the legal firm that acted for Craig Whyte in his purchase of Rangers Football Club plc from Sir David Murray in May 2011.

Those funds were added to the creditors’ pot, as will any monies raised from the legal action against Clark and Whitehouse.

In a statement, BDO said: “The joint liquidators, following extensive deliberations with their professional advisors and the liquidation committee, have taken the decision to issue a claim against the former Rangers’ administrators Paul Clark and David Whitehouse, of Duff & Phelps.

“During the course of the liquidation, questions have arisen regarding the strategy previously adopted by the former administrators, which have not, to date, been adequately answered.

“In seeking clarity, the joint liquidators have been left with no other option but to pursue the matter via the Scottish Court. The joint liquidators look forward to the resolution of this matter.”

Criminal charges against Clark and Whitehouse relating to their involvement with Rangers Football Club plc were dropped in June 2016.

Duff & Phelps have been approached for comment.

If STV had been paying attention they would have known CL money is paid in 3 tranches in Oct Dec and June.

That tranche in 2011 had RFC beaten Malmo would have paid the wee tax bill and kept them out of administration.

In fact it was only the June tranche in 2011 from previous years CL that let them pay Vienna the Jelavic instalment and so get around the no overdue payables to other clubs rule. (There wasnt enough left over to pay the wtc bill).

Their dependence on CL money for survival was total and no Scottish club should ever again be allowed to get in that position yet here we are 6 years later and CL riches are still part of TRFC’s business plan.

This is one instance where facing economic illiteracy has worked in favour of Celtic supporters.

If that is current it means even more unravelling of what took place in 2011 and 2012 through the courts.

It’s pretty clear now on what basis the UEFA licence was granted. There are two narratives, one much more recent than 2011, but both raise issues of probity on part of SFA and RFC for which answers are needed.

It was Duff and Phelps who were asked for ALL documents relating to ebts in 2012 with accompanying side letters but failed to deliver.

With the Supreme Court and CW trial as well 2017 promises to be the year of The Great Unravelling.

Looks to me that all clubs effected by the actions of Duff and Phelps should look for answers to questions especially as you say they would not provide the necesary documents, not hard to work out who this was to benefit right enough.

How come this administartion did not save money, they even tried to sign players?
