The spectacular rise in income, which saw Celtic bank £61.2m in the six months to 31 December 2016, compared to £52.0m in the TWELVE months to 31 June 2016, was influenced by four categories:
Champions League participation
Improved commercial sponsorship deals
The Brendan Rodgers effect
Foreign exchange rates
Clinging onto a lead that August night in Israel guaranteed this would be a record turnover season for Celtic, instead of what may have been a loss. As well as the Uefa dividend itself, we sell more tickets for other games in seasons we participate in the Champions League. We also sell more merchandise, premium packages and hot dogs at league games.
I was very surprised when news of the Dafabet and Magners deals filtered through last spring. Sentiment at the club at that time was on its bum, but these contracts brought a significant increase in income (in the case of Dafabet) and great income for a new property (in the case of Magners). Worthy mention also to Intelligent Car Leasing, for the boost they have given to the Foundation.
The ready-reckoner revealed that the value of these contracts roughly equated to one season’s Champions League money. It was a huge result, which laid a critical foundation for the steps the club took to secure a manager in May.
We were guaranteed more money, which gave us more confidence, which fuelled the move to secure a top manager. The small snippets of history are often missed, but no less fascinating.
Brendan Rodgers arrived like a superstar and has delivered on that promise. From the moment touched down in Scotland he sold season tickets, the club united behind a talented manager who is here determined to achieve great things.
No club in the world is more dependent on foreign exchange rates than Celtic (euro/GBP graph above). The economically illiterate (don’t start me) who voted for Brexit have caused an untold net harm to the world, but as sterling depreciated against the euro, the value of Celtic’s euro income from Uefa in GBPs went through the roof.
We are a football club playing in Scotland who earn euros and sterling in almost equal measure. Bad UK economic news may harm our sterling income but will boost our euro income. No other club operates a scenario like this.
Well done to all concerned, from Brendan and the players, to the tens of thousands who bought tickets and mechanise, and the commercial team and board.

Skiing in Switzerland, better take yer piggy bank.
A mate of mine was in the mountains recently with his two wee girls, he paid 29CHF for sausage and chips, that’s more than 20 pounds sterling I believe with the post Brexit exchange rates:((

I would say that the German population is roughly 13x bigger than ours goes a long way towards that better commercial performance. I think we often overestimate our global reach. I’d be quite surprised if it was much bigger than Bayern’s domestic, never mind their global profile as perennial late CL participants.
Hands Up.
For a few $ more.
Good old BBC Scotland – emphasising the “plc” after they say “the liquidators of Rangers Football Club”.
Anyone remember them saying “Woolworths plc”?

I wasn’t actually trying to compare our size with Bayern’s. I was just using them as an example of a club which maximizes their commercial value. They get far less TV money than the big English and Spanish clubs, but keep pace with them financially which of course translates to on-field success.
Hopefully we are beginning to get better at this and with (hopefully!) further CL campaigns our potential will be further enhanced.

I booked online 2 x tickets for ICT tie a week ago and received the tickets in the post lat Friday.

Blessed with a Man that is Realising the TOMMY BURNS dream.
It was so very Telling that he gave the Rangers player Barrie a special hug. He played so well on the day – Big Moussa was the ownage however.
Scotland is so low, the only way can be up.

Ah sorry. I did wonder, you’re normally more sensible than what I misinterpreted you as saying.
Leftfield – Release the Pressure
Domestic turkeys are genetically modified/ pumped full of hormones to have large breasts; for that reason they are usually bred artificially, in case the rooster flattens the hen during coitus.
Wild turkeys, on the other hand, enjoy a very active sex life, although the actual act usually lasts less than a few seconds.
Between the months of March and June roosters have very little, other than sex, on their mind.

Did not get to see any live sport on Sunday so recorded the Cavan-Dublin GAA game from Breffni Park and the Celtic -Saints match. Got around to watching the Celtic match last night and it was terrific entertainment and all credit to both teams and yes Saints were hard done by with that penalty decision but I doubt it would have changed the final result. In the glory days of the late sixties and early seventies the term Swashbuckling Celts was often used to describe Celtic’s brand of attacking fooitball, we had it in abundance last Sunday.
Reading in one of the newspapers to-day about the problems facing Scottish football in Europe a Scottish journo made reference to fine performance of Dundalk and teams like Aberdeen should be equally as good as the irish team. The difference of course lies in match fitness as the League of Ireland season begins in a couple of weeks and by the time Europe starts Dundalk and Cork – who also did well- will be probably fitter than their opponents.
Probably an element of chicken-egg to it too. The bigger commercial deals you do gets you better known…..
He’s still got it

Ta for that. Wee phone call ra morra if postie doesn’t deliver the goods.

Its not just fitness , you need a good manager, Aberdeen dont have one in my opinion.

Well I still think the answer is shuttle busses running to an offsite location with hunners of parking spaces. Give the busses some kind of traffic priority and get people out of the area pronto.
Maybe there’s a suitable site somewhere in Cambuslang?
Maybe Willie Haughey has a bit of land lying about waiting for something to happen?
Dessybhoy…………..A combination of both I imagine. The SPL is better than The LOI it is the national sport and Scottish teams should be at least getting through the early rounds of Europe. Europe starts so early now that teams have to be out of the blocks from the off.

No prob. Not sure about the “sensible” bit though :-)

I haven’t seen any of LOI games but did notice Dundalk doing well in Europe this season, nothing surprises me about Scottish teams exiting Europe sharpish, Celtic aside none are capable at present. Be it a technical, fitness coaching issue it is not changing, I personally feel technical players are booted off the park here and are not afforded protection from the refs, the robust player then knows he will get away with it.
Heavy breestit turkeys! No wonder the roosters have little else on their minds. Can you still get Keira Knightley turkeys though?
SFTB Sunday 8:50pm
Sorry for not replying sooner. You’re correct. I think it may have been Fir park BC they beat in the final in 74. They lost to Eastercraigs in the final the following year. Btw, I picked up a right good Tim that knows you, the other day. B McK. He spoke very highly of you. He also said you play 5s with guys from the Evergreen SC. I used to be a member. Great bunch of guys. I’ll try and get my Email addie to you. Thanks, HH
