A remarkable appointment at the peak of our reach

681

In 2014 Brendan Rodgers was within touching distance of immortality on Merseyside, but Manchester City were on Liverpool’s tail throughout the campaign and snatched the title by two points.

The locals were distraught but loved the incredibly attacking formations Rodgers deployed. Liverpool were back, or so it seemed. Within 17 months, Jurgen Klopp made his availability known to Liverpool and in October last year Brendan was out of a job.

Celtic wanted Rodgers from the off but their major concern from the start was the familiar lure of English and Welsh lucre. Average managers there can command between £3m and £5m a year, getting on for 10% of Celtic’s income – and we pay tax and employer’s National Insurance, remember!

In recent weeks it became clear that Brendan is a Celtic man and was very interested in the job, while an offer he couldn’t refuse from England or Wales didn’t materialise. What went wrong for Brendan in Liverpool, after coming so close to the title, opened the door for Celtic.

The Merseyside team dropped from second to sixth last season, still higher than they were when he picked them up, but the slip worried the club to the extent that they could not resist Klopp’s availability. There’s reason to believe Liverpool were a tad hasty.

Much of Rodger’s success at Liverpool was based on getting the very best out of Suarez and Sturridge. They electrified English football in a manner which just didn’t happen before Brendan arrived, but Suarez fled for Barcelona as soon as he returned from his infamous World Cup, while Sturridge missed most of the following season through injury.

Suarez will be the first to break the Messi-Ronaldo Ballon d’Or duopoly. He is one of the world’s truly great players.  Remember our own experiences when losing world class players.

We went from double winners to fifth (and sacked Jock Stein) when Dalglish left, and from 26 consecutive league wins to second when Larsson went. Losing one of the best players in the world takes time to recover from. What made Liverpool championship contenders just wasn’t there anymore. This cost Brendan his job, and a little of his reputation.

Before last night’s Europa League final the inane commentators told us, when discussing Klopp, that good managers can always improve players. This wasn’t meant to be a slight on Rodgers, but neither was it a deserved accolade for Klopp. Liverpool finished the season 8th in the league, lower than at any of Rodgers’ finishes.

Good managers can improve players, but only if they are taking over from less-effective managers. Klopp is one of the very best in the business, but Brendan Rodgers bettered him with the same team. He’s a manager at the absolute peak of our reach, it will be a remarkable appointment.

Usual caveats apply, until the lawyers have triplicate copies signed……

  1. It’s Celtic we are talking about.

Here’s hoping but until it’s a done deal i remain sceptical.

As season ticket sale time draws near there will be many squirrels sighted.

With Ro(d)gers at the helm I feel it is time to start dreaming again bhoys.

    Onwards & upwards…….to the heavens!

  3. Brendan won’t fail with that surname.

Me, my dad Ted, my aunt Clodagh and uncle Roy are delighted. Mind you I wouldn’t put too much weight on uncle Roy’s opinion. He’s a bit of a cowboy and also can’t spell his surname properly.

I have to say if Celtic do appoint Brendan Rodgers it will rank as one of the top 4-5 signings at the time of swooping in my lifetime (am 36 later this year).

Maybe we didn’t go for Roberto Di Matteo because there would be too many i’s to dot and t’s to cross…..

Sorry guys I’m very suspicious of this – looks like a placed story for the Mail.

If Celtic have made a formal offer and Someone at CP has leaked it prior to a confirmed acceptance then they should walk the plank. This has a ‘Celtic snubbed’ headline dripping from it.

The answer to Celtics offer to Brendan Rodgers may very much depend on Liverpool although not short of money Brendan owns 272 houses ( figures from news now Celtic ) he is unlikely to want to walk away from his pay off monies. He may ask Liverpool if they can reduce his pay off amount by half as this would save Liverpool money and also mean Brendan does not lose all his remaing pay off monies if he accepts Celtics offer. So it looks if it is not just as straight forward as accepting Celtics offer there are legalities that require to be sorted out so all parties are happy. H.H.

Yeah I remember that. Also said “I believe Glasgow Rangers belong in the top flight”. Maybe get a job at Sevco!

*well he is a hibbee, they of the 57 varieties.

  9. I read that JJ article, and a poster made a good point in the comments section, saying that, RIFC could prob. Go ahead with what they are doing, and by the time the courts up here get round to it, say two, maybe three years, a quick fix could have been done, and the said quick cash would be gone? Could be the GASL end game?

  10. If Brendan is to become our manager, over the feckin moon, but won’t be holding ma breath, too many disappointments in the past.

Always wary when something like this is leaked.

    Just get it signed

I like the idea of our manager being called Brendan. :)))

Wonder who he’ll sign to partner Leigh?

I want to more than anything :-) just don’t like the fact it’s been leaked, that worries me.

It’s Celtic FFS, when do we ever do things the easy way ?

Ambition = respect. Respect to Celtic for this. And to P67 for getting the exclusive ahead of the SMSM. Changed days indeed. Why pay for a newspaper for your Celtic news any more? Different story if you’re looking for Sevco news of course.

That he has, but you have to agree, MA holds all the cards on this one, King has to play his hand as he jets in this weekend, it’s a given, he has to get them believing him (and that’s easy) to get the season tickets sold, that’s why JJ was calling his play a squirrel.

I’m surprised it wasent leaked at the beginning of the week, that’s (I am told) when it was done, the delay is a courtesy to let all those who where in for it know what happened. Normal procedure from what I’m told.?

  19. I won’t celebrate till it’s officially announced but am genuinely excited at the prospect. The appointment guarantees nothing but it is a mighty statement if intent.

If it happens and I think it will, I hope that those who are always Board bashing will acknowledge the appointment as a positive thing. It’s not about anyone being proved wrong, it’s about us all getting back on the one road.

I respectfully decline with thanks to my nominee:)

  21. Brendan eh? Now that is what I call good news!

An update on our NEWSPAPER STATEMENT plans. Ads are now booked and paid for for The Guardian for next week and also for the French speaking Swiss broadsheet Tribune de Geneve, which is also happening next week. All this is paid for and we have a small balance left over.

A considerable discount was negotiated by ourselves to afford these English and Swiss ads.

We’re now tempted to book an additional ad in a Scottish newspaper next Thursday.

Accordingly, if we can maybe ask for a final push from anyone who supports Res 12 and wants to see it get to the widest possible audience then please consider contributing to the cause.

You can order the wonderful new Charlie Gallagher book and you also get The Winds of Change for free. You’ll love them both!

I’m aware SF had a lot more running and received majority of votes but the amount of first preference that o’carroll got was an eye opener.

SF vote is down across the board.. Onl 2 in Derry where they went all out for the 3.

West Belfast is the stronghold and it’s been described by many as the most deprived area of the north… That tells me the people have been let down. They deserve better so hopefully this bit of competition brings better results.
