A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

As I have posted previously. The biggest tragedy of all was that the Kellys and Whites in their arrogances could not countenance even opening the doors a little to the ordinary fan.

  2. I saw a few posters mention the need for a united front between supporters of Scottish football teams.

Trust me, this is much, much more difficult to achieve than people actually think.

It’s not simply a case of, “We agree on XYZ, let’s get together and form a plan!”

Club loyalties, hidden agendas, mistrust, egos etc etc etc all have a part in this.

Most of the time we can’t even get anywhere near reaching agreement within our own support.

    What chance…….sadly.

Are you sure, really sure. I can’t remember when exactly it was I talked to you personally, and for that I apologise, but mate understand I do talk to… well a few guys, I do remember our conversation though mate, I remember it like it was last night.

I DID what I DIDN’T want to do but I did it for what I believed was best for the soul of our club, not the share price.

When you put your head on the pillow tonight, try and remember what you said to me all those months ago. I am not judging you, I know how hard it is for your heart and soul to turn their backs on love, but I do remember mate.

Takes courage to hurt that that you love the most.

Courage that crushes your heart and waterfalls of tears.

A solid boycott from Celtic fans….would send a message to both sevco bigots and the Celtic plc.

If this corruption is not defeated soon….we as Celtic supporters have lost.

If we continue to allow this…we deserve to be shafted.

There is no point paying to be cheated….that’s exactly what the huns want.

I will never see or hear their minging bigot fans at CP, ever again.

Its just a pity that Celtic fans cant show a bit of solidarity.

    HH

  6. And yet, thousands will refuse to support their fellow fans in a boycott, and buy into a rigged league with cheating hun refs and violent corrupt bigots.

But carry on…don’t let anybody put you off your old firm jamboree, which will keep them afloat, and lead to more shafting.

Let us cheat they cry…..sadly, they get away with it, because we wont stand together to confront it.

    That’s the reality.

    HH

  7. A mass boycott at Celtic Park!!??

    Never gonna happen.

You have just summed up why there is no solidarity against the corruption.

    “Never gonna happen”

I’m amazed there has not been a mass demo of Celtic fans against the corruption.

But hey ho….people want to be shafted….go right ahead.

  10. Anybody that cannot stand with their fellow fans against corruption…..you should be ashamed.

I, too, would like to see a boycott (even for one game) by all Celtic supporters …. just to prove a point. The question is to whom the point will be made.

As has been pointed out, a boycott by all celtic fans is difficult to manage, let alone trying to get some agreement with fans of other clubs. We are a broad church.

However, I am less critical of the Celtic fans, even when there is disagreement as to the right course of action; we, all, intuitively want to believe the best about our club, and those who are running it, even if there is disagreement about what this means, or how to achieve it. In light of what has happened, some will still give them the benefit of the doubt; others no longer will. Although I am increasingly wary of our Board, I cant say that either side is entirely unreasonable.

I dont see other clubs or their fans really banding with Celtic fans (as, for many, we are ‘as bad as them’). As such, this fight, if it is to be fought, I believe that it will likely have to be fought by Celtic. The question then is whether that fight will be by the club or the fans. Frankly, without the club’s honest and full backing and support, I fear than any fan based initiative would almost certainly fail.

As such, I think that, if there is to be real change, the charge must be lead by those that are running Celtic. If truth isn’t provided, then the Club needs to consider some form of boycott (cups? ).

If the club doesn’t do the right thing, then the fans that want the truth, may have to make the unpalatable decision to stop financial support of the Club until those that run it are forced to do the right thing.

KITALBA. Good to see you back fella, now I can only answer for myself but the cheating over at Ibrokes has not come to its conclusion as yet and in my view it will be clearer after the court cases that are to come early in 2016.Now if the the Rangers and the people connected with them are allowed to walk away with a mere slap on the wrist Scottish football will be finished. If that is the out come I am finished with Scottish football I will always cast an eye at Celtic as old habits die hard but not another penny will be spent by me. Now if Paul and the good folks on CQN decide to set up a fighting fund over resolution 12 I as a pensioner would contribute but would you ? H.H.

  14. I tell you what…I wouldn’t rely on many of you in a fight.

    3. Stewart Milne (AFC owner and chairman) reviews Scottish football and says we all need to move on for the good of the game and ensure that RFC (sic) is back in the top flight.

You are correct it is pie in the sky to think that fans of any other clubs will band with Celtic fans. Take Aberdeen, yes most of them hate Sevco and Rangers before them. But we are a close second. They do not care for us much either. Anyway, could I stand shoulder to shoulder with fans who sing about Jimmy Saville. ? Doubtful.

But on your other point , to successfully boycott anything you must be a regular participant, then stop going. With the best will in the world that would be hard from the other side of the pond.

Aiden Bhoy … I will admit that I am not always consistent on this issue. In my gut, I agree with you. But

    (1) there are people (who I dont know except through the blog) that are good, true Celtic supporters who want the best for the club, and, given the work they have done, if they are prepared to keep fighting, I feel like I should support them.

    (2) increasingly, I have a harder time connecting to Celtic. Based on what we know now, my head says we have been sold up the river and I should walk away now, as I dont want to support the lies. However, my heart is not so quick to cut ties with Celtic.

  27. mike in toronto on 16th December 2015 4:59 pm

The truth is that like most of us, your heart will never let go.

It is sixty six years since I first saw Celtic and I still get a kick out of seeing them scoring.

And when the ball hits the net, my first reaction is to look at the linesman.

But at the end of the day, you must listen to your head.

MIKE IN TORONTO. It is to early to walk away just yet the fighting Irish in the support will not just lie down and roll over to get there tummy tickled. However,we must wait and see the outcome of the various court cases early next year. I dont think for a minute the Celtic support are daft but if the huns are not properly punished and also the football authorities taken to ask any football fan who puts money into a rigged game need to be locked up for there own protection. H.H.

I certainly do understand the power of the bigot pound.

However, I’m less clear on why the Celtic PLC think they can treat their own supporters as fools.

Because….that most certainly will not be tolerated much longer.

Hence, the dwindling crowds….which will despite old firm bigotry, dwindle further.

JFH … there is some merit to what you say, but, I am afraid it may not come soon enough for me ….as was pointed out by Aidenbhoy , they are likely to be fouling CP next season with their songs of hate …. once Sevco are in the Premiership (which, I expect, will be next year) and we have to deal with them and their fans ….when they are welcomed into Celtic Park …. that might be when I say enough is enough.

  32. I will stump up cash to support any fund raising to fight legal case, I will write letters attend demo or support boycott of any specific match or event but regardless of what happens I will not give up on supporting Celtic.

We all only have one life to lead, almost 68 years of mine is gone, how many left I do not know.

What I do know is that following Celtic gives me great joy and is a huge part of my life, as I say I don’t know how many years I have left but what I do know is that I intend to keep following Celtic for every one of them regardless of what the SFA or anybody else does. Huns can do what they like, say what they like, they don’t bother me at all.

Celtic Supporters here who talk about walking away make me sad, all I can say if you cannot be persuaded to stay then I am sorry but if you choose to walk then just walk but please don’t try and encourage others to walk. There are a new generation of Tims coming up behind us, we have had a loan of the Celtic Story for our lifetime let’s not deny the new generation their legacy.

P.S. We are on our way to winning 5 in a row, how bloody good is that. Remember the barren years did any of ye even imagine we could be back winning 5 in a row, well we are and we are not stopping at five,.
