A simple lie, compliant Celtic voices and it was job done

381

I was out and about this morning and heard Neil Lennon on the radio making it very clear that he was not about to abandon Bolton Wanderers, despite their inability to pay wages or settle creditors when due. Having “shed millions from the payroll in the summer” his focus was on winning points with a squad augmented by youth development players.

For Neil, the financial realities are simply the parameters he had to work within.

Think back 18 months to when he left Glasgow. Celtic Park was awash with amicable statements from club and manager but the news coverage could not have been more skewed – Neil left because he was unhappy at working within his given budget. We had former Celtic players broadcasting this message that very day. And like every negative Celtic story, it got traction among those more than happy to believe that narrative.

It was nonsense. Celtic’s football budget hadn’t changed. Neil had not adopted a view of himself which only allowed him to deal with more expensive players. What happened was a PR campaign took flight within moments of the news breaking. Dig into Celtic, turn the fans against them. It worked too. A simple lie, a couple (literally) of compliant ‘Celtic’ voices and it was job done.

This has been going on for decades. It’s only recently, with formal PR companies competing for the same demographic, we’ve seen how these messages get into the media.

Celtic have PR to arrange media conferences, distil club news and formal statements. There’s no attempt at subversion, either outwards or at our own demographic.

Saturday is a big day for our Treble Winning Captains. Shortly after Billy McNeil unveils his statue in front of the stadium, Tom Boyd, our only other Treble Winning Captain will be in the Kerrydale Suite, to sign personalised copies of The Winds of Change. The book which covers Celtic managers from Liam Brady to Martin O’Neill, across what was an unforgettable story of redemption.

Joining Tom at the signing session will be Billy’s former team mate, John Hughes. If you get talking to Yogi, just listen. He’s seen it all, so don’t interrupt him.

You’ll be able to buy The Windows of Change, as well as Caesar and The Assassin, the book which documents Billy McNeill and Davie Hay’s periods in charge, inside the Kerrydale Suite before kick off.

Club sponsor, Magners, have kindly offered us two Premium Seat tickets for Saturday’s game in the Jock Stein Stand. To enter the competition, what you’ve got to do is email me, celticquicknews@gmail.com with the name of the team we’re playing in the email Subject Line.  Competition closes at 18:00 TODAY, so it’s only open for a short window….

…………while you are entering the competition. You might want to take an extra minute and donate £1 to our Mary’s Meals school kitchen project. You have already built four kitchens in Malawi. These donations go towards putting food on the table.  You can donate here.

I think you overestimate the power of the Celtic Board to achieve the sorts of changes we would all wish to see.

Celtic F.C. operate in an environment which is ,at the very least, unhelpful to our cause and has done for many years. i.e.. an unsympathetic environment.

And sometimes a dangerous environment…………viz. Lenny.

    I ask again.

Do you know what the Celtic Board are doing or have done about these issues?

  2. Mcjay

Id say its obvious that the PLC are doing absolutely nothing.

They are hiding from their own supporters.

The supporters do not trust them, because they like to hold secret meetings, and are pretty good at the secret handshakes as well.

What are the Celtic PLC becoming….Rangers?

    Beyond contempt.

They are looking the other way, while the cheating is rife….still.

You said: – “the Kelly’s and the whites got it right.” Is this for real? This is a phrase that I never thought I would ever read on a Celtic website.

How many games did you go to in the period 1989 to march 1994? Did you ever sit in the old board’s shambolic Heath Robinson “solution” to the taylor report, the bucket seats in the jungle, while watching Wayne biggins waddle about the pitch?

Were you there when they paraded Vincent the parrot as the highlight of the season while sanctioning made up articles in the Celtic view on “Cambuslang is green for go” “baresi: my ambition to star for celts” etc while we were struggling to finish 4th in the league and being papped out the cup by the likes of Falkirk and Motherwell?

You are at the wind up. The only thing the Kelly’s and whites got right was using our club as their personal cash cow for too many years.

I do not need someone half the world away to pontificate, on what is happening, in my lifetime, in my own backyard.

    Nothing has changed! Yet.

As Auldheid et al have frequently stated, this is a long game and there are many court cases to be settled, many Scottish football authorities to challenged, before definitive answers to massive questions must be answered by Celtic and it’s support.

I’m as rabid a Celt as anyone but guys are screaming cheat & mason at every decision but by & large I think the Celtic games I’ve seen are fairly reffed. Have we had bad decisions, yes of course we have, all Clubs do. IMO we have had worse decisions against us in Euro games then in SPFL games.

I would make an exception of the Cup semi last year, how the Officials missed that incident is beyond me.

Re the Title stripping we first have to wait to see whether BDO are granted Leave to Appeal and if they are we will have to wait until we get result of appeal. Until that happens all the guff and posturing is a waste of our energy. There will be a day when there is a battle to be fought but for the moment keep our powder dry.

The suits were thinking outside the box when they appointed Ronny, and fair play to them for it, a gamble right enough, but from what I see, the seeds have been sewn and if they stick with it, and I am nigh on certain they will, the benefits will be had down the line.

Now if it transpires that they decide to relieve him of his post, they have to think outside the box again, carry on with what has been sewn, none of your Coyle and Moyes types.

You said they (the Kelly’s and whites) got it right. No, they palpably didn’t, given that they took us to a position of being minutes from bankruptcy.

A fairer position to say would be that one member of the family dynasty made an inspired decision in appointing jock stein as manager in 1965. Everything that happened after that was to the credit of jock and the players.

As quonno has pointed out- how many trophies did we win in the 30 years before jock under the Kelly and white watch. Robert Kelly was picking the team to disastrous effect, getting us beaten 4-0 in a European semi to mtk Budapest when we were 3-0 up from the first leg because he wanted to entertain the Hungarian fans with attacking football.

What did they do after jock? Well they embarrassed the guy by offering him a position as director of the Celtic pools in 1978. After all he had done for our club.

They proceeded to run our club into decline. When Davie hay asked for funds to sign an upcoming young defender by the name of Steve Bruce they told him to pay for the transfer fee out his own pocket.

And Chris white did a roaring trade in selling tickets to our away fans at above face value.

So, on balance, the Kelly’s and whites didn’t get it right as you put it.

Feel free to be grateful for a “contribution” that saw our club nearly go out of business and sleekit family members trouser a fortune for their shares as reward for driving our club to the brink (hello Michael Kelly).

I make no apologies for being less than grateful for such a “contribution” to our club.

How many on here would have, a while back, put money on the UEFA and FIFA Presidents facing life bans? But that is exactly what Blatter and Platini are facing, before the FIFA Ethics Committee, tomorrow and Friday respectively. Word up is a seven year ban more likely but that alone would be a vindication for the work of the one man who has slowly but surely exposed the level of corruption at the very top of World football, Andrew Jennings, now aided and abetted by the US Dept of Justice. Blatter for his part has called the process “an inquistion” while Platini, that well known supporter of playing football in a desert in the summer, will refuse to attend on Friday. No mention of Campbell Ogilvie I know, but hopefully if the bans come to pass next week, change will follow, against the wishes of those not yet in the dock if necessary. We wanted to govern our own self interests not become a vehichle for one man’s ambitions for us. No matter how honourable he may find them. I’m just copying here to provide a link to Twitter Users looking for info.

An Update on Progress with Resolution 12 to Celtic AGM 2013.

Introduction. Many Celtic supporters and shareholders will be unsighted on what Resolution 12 to the 2013 AGM was about and certainly, unless they frequent the internet, what has happened since. This article for Not The View will bring readers up to date and hopefully increase realisation that it is no longer a Celtic issue but one of better, more professional, transparent, accountable but above all honest governance by the SFA. There never will be a better opportunity to bring that about than now. Please read on and be ready to support.

    Background

Resolution 12 requested the Celtic Board exercise the provision contained in the Procedural Rules Governing the UEFA Club Financial Control Body Article 10 with jurisdiction and investigation responsibilities identified in articles 3 & 11 (Note 1), by referring/bringing to the attention of the UEFA Club Financial Control Body (CFCB), the licensing administration practices of the Scottish Football Association (SFA), requesting the CFCB undertake a review and investigate the SFA’s implementation of UEFA & SFA license compliance requirements, with regard to qualification, administration and granting of licenses to compete in football competitions under both SFA and UEFA jurisdiction, since the implementation of the Club Licensing and Financial Fair Play Regulations of 2010.

The resolution was adjourned when certain information was brought the attention of the Celtic Board that suggested that the resolution was indeed necessary, contrary to Celtic’s published response that it was not necessary made to the AGM.

Following a series of meetings during 2014 during which Celtic met with the SFA on shareholders behalf and because of questions marks over the source of the information, since resolved, and as a result of what the SFA told Celtic in August 2014, Celtic shareholders representatives approached the SFA on 20th April 2015 following discussion with Celtic who were aware of their responsibilities to shareholders.

On the basis that the SFA were expecting an approach from August 2014 and even allowing for a long delay whilst expert tax advice as well as legal opinion was sought, it came as a bit of a surprise when the SFA refused to respond to a letter containing a number of questions presented by shareholders representatives.

The refusal was on the basis that the letter came from anonymous individuals in spite of there being earlier representations by Celtic on shareholders behalf whose bona fides had been established when the resolution was accepted and tabled by Celtic at the AGM.

A firm of solicitors was then engaged to act for the shareholders representatives who were acting for Celtic shareholders who signed the resolution and the same letter of 20th April was delivered to SFA on 23 July 2015.

Again the SFA wished to know the identity of the shareholders presenting the letter and said they would deal only with Celtic.

At time of writing (mid-September) the intent is to forcefully reminded the SFA in a further solicitor’s letter of their obligations to investigate under their own rules what has been brought to their attention and reply to the questions in the original shareholders letter.

Based on documentation placed before court on which expert tax advice was sought, shareholders representatives believe that there was an overdue payable at 30 June 2011 and it should have been reported to UEFA as such. The evidence shows that it was not and the SFA are being asked to explain how they dealt with the matter.

We believe Resolution 12 has proved to have been more than justified as necessary. It has taken a long time to make progress because of SFA resistance. They knew by August 2014 that shareholders had a case. However the proposers of the resolution are confident that the legal route chosen to get the SFA to answer the questions is the correct path that will prevent the SFA using football rules to get them off a hook of their own making.

There are many issues at stake here that will not be buried, but with the passage of time the main one is about making the SFA and all professional football clubs operating as PLCs in the association realise that decisions taken by the national associations must take into account the impact on the value of all clubs in the association of that decision and not just one who find themselves in a predicament.

This ultimately is about creating an SFA that is transparent and accountable to the Scottish footballing support as a whole not just Celtic supporters and establishing mechanisms for delivering both.

Signatories to the Resolution and indeed all Celtic shareholder who wish to have more detail should e mail auldheid046@gmail.com with evidence of their shareholding.

[Update (not in NTV): The SFA were approached again on 13 November and SFA said on 30 November they had had discussions with the member club and were happy to continue to do so. A meeting to ascertain what form those discussions are taking and crucially if the points in the original letter are being addressed has been requested]

  20. How long must Celtic stay silent?

I understand waiting until leave of appeal has been decided but really this should have no bearing on our clubs position.

In reality there is no need to await the BDO HMRC appeal, actually there was no need to wait for the initial decisions either. Irrespective of guilt or innocence on tax avoidance/tax evasion, the players with EBT’s/Side Letters were not properly registered, & therefore ineligible to play, end of story.

The only question that needs to be answered is/was… Were the SFA given the side letters when each player was registered?

If not, then the players were ineligible & proper penalties for this should have been applied by the SFA at the earliest opportunity. i.e. not a £250,000 fine.

Celtic must have an opinion on this punishment & I fail to understand why it’s within our interests to not vocalise our disgust. Years of improperly registered players should mean all games voided with trophies rescinded. Why Celtic or any other club directly effected hasn’t asked for this really a does speak volumes.

    European Licence –

Again a simple issue, as just dealt with quickly by the Dutch FA.

The only question that needs to be answered is…. Were taxes owed by Rangers(IL) at the time or not?

Now, why are these two simple questions so hard for the SFA to get answers to/deal with?

Perhaps it is because they are complicit in both cases and then it is not only Rangers(IL) that would need sanctioned. FA’s should always act quickly and decisively, obviously the SFA have not done so.

Why clubs might be reluctant take action themselves?

The SFA are the member clubs – Therefore that’s the possible reason for the seeming reluctance of Celtic & other clubs to take action themselves on these matters. As it could be said that clubs taking action would be doing so against their own interests, with unknown consequences from Uefa, wronged European teams who played against Rangers (IL) etc.

If this reason is an accurate one, then it seems Rangers (IL) “cheating/rule breaking” will not be addressed, as it could destroy football in Scotland. So the fans it seems are up a gumtree & we now have to realise we are not watching football as a sport but as a WWE type entertainment.

I was of the opinion very early on before Jelly & Ice cream time, that our club was playing with fire by keeping slient. Perhaps I was wrong in this observation, as it now seems the majority of fans will continue to support a bent league.

    Well not this fan.

  21. Macjay

I honestly believe that we all want the same thing, even those who crit the board on a daily basis, they are doing it cos they care imo.

As for people who make uninformed guesses, or informed guesses, they do so on the back of the lack of movement on any front re the decades of cheating.

Now that the info is in the public domain, you would have though that the club, no not the club, the PLC would be demanding change, demanding that the like will never happen again, nothing, nada, silch, why would that be I ask myself.

The bigot pound, the back of the bus syndrome, the OF love in, and prob a few more to choose from, it’s all about the money.

And as for the assertion that our present suits have got it right.

Aye we haven’t gone bust, like the rest of scottish football haven’t gone bust is no praise.

The crowds are dwindling, the football on show is getting less and less competitive by the year, the perenial failure to strengthen the squad, the failure to forward plan, the constant selling of our best players to make up for the shortfall of the failure to attain CL football, the constant attacks on the support, the lack of standing up for the support.

Aye, they sure are getting it right.

As another poster said earlier re the Kellys and Whites, I would hate the present suits getting it wrong.

  25. Zeeezo the White’s and the Kelly’s.

Hopefully when I view the Billy McNeill statue I will remember to wander over to the Jimmy Johnstone statue. I will pay my respects then view the ” Celts for Change” plaque acknowledging the group for bringing change to the club.

Thankfully we still have a club.

Bob Kelly’s name will forever be tarnished by his family associations with the period that almost saw the club going into receivership (1990’s board), however, any assessment should be on what he did and not what followed long after his passing. In an historic perspective, it can be rather more generous to him than to his younger relatives Michael and Kevin Kelly.

By modern standards, he was an autocrat, no question of that, but his role was hardly extraordinary for his era. What he didn’t do, though, was recognise the changing trends around him in the game (e.g. the track suited managers, the development of European football) until it was almost too late. He appointed Jock Stein, initially with reluctance, just in time for the club, but at least he did that and established a good working relationship with the Big Man up until his death. Stein appears to have respected Kelly considerably.

    ==========================================================

    You`re right.

I`m as outraged as the next Tim.

    So.Let`s boycott Celtic.

    What will that achieve?

Do we imagine that the Celtic Board are unaware of our feelings?

    Of course they are not.

Demonstrate,by all means……………….Publicity is the answer.

    Aberdeen supporters at Hampden.

Not some meaningless boycott which hurts no-one but Celtic.

    Do we really want that?

    Nice talking,my fellow Tim.

In both instances Celtic were unable to act at the appropriate time because relevant information was withheld from Celtic alone in 2011 and Celtic and SPL clubs in 2012.

Bad as the original deception was the attempts at covering it up or minimising the damage have made matters ten times worse.
