It is impossible to overstate the cultural, sporting and social impact of this event on millions of lives.  You are in for a year of unadulterated indulgence.  Enjoy every minute of it and if you meet a Lisbon Lion, make sure he hears what he did for you.

  1. My abiding memory of Thursday the 25th of May 1967 is not really the game itself but of every man women and child out in the streets of the gorbals, my first memory of the tri- colour also as a 7 year old it was just another flag to me, quickly learned though

The quads re- unite every now and again to play a wee sesh in the brazen, even auld Donnelly loves them

  3. Thinking back. I remember it now –

    I was -2 years 6 months & 16 days old.

Probably the best day of my life.

  4. Happy Lisbon Lions Day to one and all. I’ve had the pleasure of working with one of the Lions and meeting nearly all of them, Wispy being the exception, I think.

Great camaraderie exists/existed between these champions from the 30 mile radius and they will always be remembered as the legends they undoubtedly are.

I was 12 when we won the Big Cup. I remember watching the game on the ole B&W gogglebox, courtesy of Eurovision, and being at Renfrew Cross when they passed by in the bus with the trophy the following day.

I live in hope to see us win at least one more European trophy whilst I am still on this planet, but one thing is for sure The Lions will always be the most important Celtic team of all time as not only did they make history that day they changed our lives for ever more.

The stadium was built to exactly the right size to maximise Fergus’ profit. If he had thought that the time and money spent on the main stand would have made him more he would have done it.

Everything was about capturing a mood, and a demographic. Right place, right time. If it had been timed to be finished earlier or later, I doubt we’d have needed a waiting list.

    Very shrewd man.

    25th May 1967

I was 7 years and 364 days old. I had just moved on from cowboys and Indians to football that season but had never seen a full Celtic game live.

The day started with Mass as it was Ascension Thursday, which is why the game was not played on a Wednesday, and continued with football in the grounds of St. Augustine’s Secondary school, Milton. As we were the youngest group, we were squeezed onto a hilly piece of ground at the Westray St. corner.

About 5.00 we all made our way back to our homes for the 5.30 kick-off. My dad normally did not get home until about 5.50 from his job in Singers in Clydebank but arrangements had been made and he was home for 5.15 when the programme started.

A Bush TV was the theatre. One fiddle with the aerial and the picture stabilised; curtains drawn to reduce the glare of the sun.

Bad start. My dad was worried we would be caught again but confidence grew as we took control.

Mum and Gran in the kitchenette – out of the way – but I was running in like a dervish to tell them every time we almost scored.

You know what happened next and next again.

Never saw my dad so happy. He said time after time “We are the first. No-one can EVER take this away from us”. He knew the significance

Just me and my dad – the best time we ever spent together.

    Postscript:

25th May 2017 will also be Ascension Thursday. Will the Lions bow out with the first ever group ascension in history?

  7. My memory of 67 was mass then building a hut with my brother and a mate on some waste ground near where we lived, home to watch the football and not really knowing the significance of the game and the result as I was 6 1/2, afterwards our village was jumping and I remember a flat bed lorry going round the village with someone playing an accordian on the back of it, it was also a warm day if I remember correctly.

  8. Kikinthenakas,

That was one of the best post I’ve ever read on this blog. I had tears in my eyes reading that and I’m at work!!!

Hope you are well. I’ll never forget you looking after me and my bhoy at Celtic Park.

I’ll be going over this season and will make an effort to see you out and buy you a pint.

Increase the Stadium Capacity or not?

If we have the collective belief, and the Business Analysis agrees, then we will up the capacity. We may not fill the stadium to capacity with every game but I think any increase would pay for itself within 5 years. Small thinking Vs realism? An interesting debate I think! :-)

    Yours in Celtic,

    TB&F.

Ach well, back to work now… Will be interesting to read further comments later.

    hahaha!

I likewise still wasnt born and my old man and all his family kicked wi the other foot! And to be fair my old man was more into rugby, even though he did support “them”. So needless to say, no stories on the Lisbon from that front!

However, I did hear plenty stories from my Mum’s side. And it was my mum – who spent countless hours kicking a ball back and forward to me as a toddler- and her family, who instilled in me my love of all things Celtic (although a certain King Kenny played rather more than a bit part in that for me) and football in general.

I shall forever be thankful to her for that.

Oh how different might my life have been had my old man been a big football fan.

    Euurrrrghhhhh!!!! Perish the thought!!

We probably average 1 sell out per season over the last 10 years. If that.

  13. What a beautiful 49th anniversary day.

My memories as a 9 year old, exactly one week to my tenth birthday living in Blackhill it was a bonkers day and night.

We watched the game in my uncles house in Bargeddie street and unfortunately for my other uncle Andy he had to leave at half time as my young cousin Angela decided to choose this time to make an appearance into the world.

When the final whistle went the vast bulk of the street proceeded towards the Provie Inn.

We were led by big Mary Maule and her sister Theresa Rennie who had a huge tricolour, there were what seemed like hundreds of other adults and many more kids in tow.

When we got to the pub the scenes were of a packed pub all singing the great Celtic songs with a few reb tunes included.

Every now and again the doors would open and a load of crisps and ginger would be passed out to us kids.

Magical moments indeed I cannot wait until the 50th next year and what a party that should be.

    Masty,

That old protective sex makes a mess of many a post!

Neil’s fault at Celtic stemmed from him being unable or unwilling to develop younger players.

Like MON before him, he was not interested in bringing youths through.

It was because he refused to work with RD, whose task would have been to prepare the development players for the first team, that he left the club, prepared to go on the dole, rather than buy into what the club wished to do.

It surprised me that he applied for the job again, considering the same conditions prevailed.

Rodgers has stated that he is looking to bring the young players through, to augment any player purchases.

    That is the difference.

  15. Tom

    Agree mate,

Maybe in the future we could give RD lennoxtown and let him get on with nurturing the talent and get them ready for the step up

  16. In the heat of Lisbon 49 years ago:

    Mods – a 19″ Tele + the 4d Woppa!

Back then I was a 2nd year apprentice – had to work my lunch-break in order to get away early (very unaccommodating hun management).

Being a Mod – I had a Lambretta TV200 with go-faster stripes and 1/2 a tonne of wing-mirrors – Valentino Rossi would have been hard pressed to beat me as I floored it to get home in time for kick-off.

Watched the game at my pal’s with his mad Celtic brothers cause they had just got one of those new fangled Widescreen 19″ TVs.

Result! Mad kick-abouts in the street after the game (100+? kids) – the Ice Cream Van did a roaring trade probably selling these on the night:

    https://youtu.be/i9e7n7KXdwg?list=PLgRYLyQWA0MxhzeX0uTgtHj_pzPFSBAdG

Wee brothers/sisters packed off home and off to pub to celebrate – Celtic Park the following night for the coal-lorry parade. Time of our lives!

  17. I think that the Celtic board should talk to Hibs about organizing a Charity Shield type match between the Cup-winners and the Champions

It would raise money for good causes

Give us a chance to have a sing-off against a very impressive singing support

    and

It would seriously piss-off the huns

Thanks for comments on previous piece.

I went to Lisbon with Sarsfield Celtic – a Gorbals club. We treated Lisbon as an away game. Bus stopped for mass then at airport advised we would be late.

Kick off 5.30pm. We arrived 5.20pm . Cannot describe the mayhem inside the craft when the stairs didn’t arrive. We opened the doors and jumped. It was like going to TynecStle. Missed the Milangoal and came home at midnight.

Bobby Murdoch at the airport was in tears ( they were seeing off their girlfriends/wives ). I asked him who scored the winning goal. I was right inline with Stevie when it went in. Bobby replied- Celtic scored the winner. I have treasured that all my life.

This generation experienced Seville. Lisbon was a much simpler but just as manic event. Celtic winning the European Cup. Who would believe that and in the process did for that abomination of a club.

Celtic, in the years ahead, will surprise a lot of people. No doubts. Hail, Hail.

  19. thomthethim for Oscar OK on

    Masty,

I thought that Ronny and Mc.Guinness would have been a good development team, but with a more experienced man in the top job.

It was not to be Neil, through his own choice.

Will be interesting to see if Jim is retained.

    Some great blogging today.

Wasn’t aware you live in Jaipur. First and only time I saw an elephant run out of patience in a traffic jam and simply walk over the vehicles in front. Quite a sight to behold, although the locals barely batted an eye.

Intriguing town and region. Must go back sometime, but perhaps after the rains though…

This day 49 years ago, I watched the game with my mother. My dad, uncles and older cousins were in my Uncle James house round the corner from us in Partick. My mum says we both watched the game with hand knitted Celtic tammies on. The fact I watched the game but cannot remember anything of the day has annoyed me all my life. Mind you, I was 10 days short of my second birthday. :)

Yes, I remember clearly watching it on telly with my Dad and my brother (was 17 at the time) and my mother was telling us we would need to leave for evening Mass. My father said “only when the game is finished!” What a roar we had at the end and it was well celebrated at the St. Johns Uddingston mass which was a wee bit delayed – unsurprisingly. Great days for European giants :))
