49 years ago I was 9 years old and was watching the game on an old black and white TV at my home in Yoker. Can’t remember who was all in our house but I believe there was a crowd. What I do remember is throughout the whole match I was clutching my fitba and as soon as the final whistle went I ran out our house kicking my fitba and screaming like a loon, the nuns in the convent across the street from my house went impressed when my ba almost hit one of their windows.

Two of my uncles went over for the match and came back with a piece of the hallow turf in a jam jar, where they got a Robertson jam jar in Portugal nobody knows, mmmm…..

Thank you Mr Gemmell and the rest of the Lions for a wonderful memory that will always be with me

STARRY PLOUGH. I think it might be a double decker I imagine Brendan has had a good look at our squad on the many videos he said he had watched. H.H.

Just askin’ like but, did anyone bother to look under the Magic Hat before sending a missing persons request to police Scotland in search of Pip Warbiola?

On a more Special note, have I just missed a couple of Legends on the blog?

Foolishly read some Tweets said bright spark had twittered.

    That’s isn’t philosophy, that’s pure, unadulterated tripe.

    Never again.

  6. Great chat with Tommy this afternoon before he came onto the blog. He was telling me about the (old) Rangers fans coming onto the park at Hampden in the mid 60s after we beat them in a cup final. He said there was some pushing, shoving and our players gave out a slap or two back – nothing he would have called an ‘assault’.

The players would have been able to look after themselves and will be embarrassed at their (new) club’s statements. A big fuss about nothing so what’s the real reason he wonders?

  7. Kickinthenakas,

Ah the famous burger from days gone by.

I used to say that if I had a sliver of the budget of Birds Eye, I would have sold a million burgers a week.

    Glad you enjoyed them.

Two legends on CQN in ine afternoon!

    Tommy Gemmell and Narrowbhoat Tim.

    A great day.

  10. What sticks out for me the morning of the game was seeing a double page spread in the paper of both teams photographed in colour, and my dad saying, “They’re some team, Inter, son!”

I hadn’t seen any of the games on the way to the final, but, even though I was only 9, I got totally caught up as I had attended my first game earlier in the season against St. Johnstone,a 6-1 skelping, with Joe McBride playing, i think, and my second against Dundee United, incredibly the only home game we lost that season, 2-3. So in that season of seasons, my Celtic attendance had a 50% lose record!

I remember that evening pretty well, and the wonder of the unadulterated joy in the living room from my father and his mate, Gerry, when the great goals were scored, and especially when the final whistle went. I was too young to appreciate just why they were so happy. But the bug I already had was cemented.

Hail! Hail! Jock and all the Lions!

  11. Mr Gemmell thank you and your fellow Lions for the greatest achievement in British football history. You cast a ray of bright sunshine that still makes us glow and casts a shiver down the backs of those down Govan side.

    Hail! hail!

  12. I noticed at the end of the game at hampden the other day, Warbiola was looking towards the fighting, he shook his head and disappeared never to be seen or heard from since.

  16. Sorry I missed Celtic legend and Lisbon Lion Tommy Gemmell this afternoon.

Would like to pass on my best wishes to him for the future, and many thanks for making the 25 May 1967 one of the happiest days of my life.

Missed The Big Shot – zut!!!

Anyway, thankfully he never missed much with that thunderbolt of a dig!

49 years ago he was cutting about Lisbon with a dozen or so teammates, with Mazzola’s shirt under his arm and supping champagne or sherry/port from the big cup. A European Cup winers medal in his pooch and he scored an absolute belter of a goal/played a blinder. Looked like a God!

Can only imagine how that must have felt and fairly certain very few of the modern teams will know what it’s like to celebrate with teammates the way they did. To share the moment with boys from your own backyard having taken on the might of the aristocrats of Italian, nay , world football and give them a real lesson in pure, inventive attacking football.

The Lions are rightly loved and cherished. Not so much for what they achieved, but for the grace and style they demonstrated in how they achieved it.

Take Pride in our Lions bhoys and ghirls, they riased the bar to a height that will take some very special players to match.

Dreaming of the next time keeps us going!

    Happy Lions Night!

On this day in 1978 I did my talk assessment while teacher training at Notre Dame on,

    The Lions of Lisbon.

Just scanned back and saw your post. You might have known my sister M mcG as she was training at Notre Dame at the same time. HH

  19. Tractorbhoy,

I’m glad as that wasn’t my intention.

Pretty certain we are cousins, my cousin Angela McDermott was born 49 years ago today as well. And her parents were Cathy and Andy.

I wrote other things that should give an idea of who I am (hopefully a relation otherwise this is going to be very embarrassing!)

  21. I am enjoying reading through the memories about that famous day 49 years ago and thought maybe I should share mine. I was 12 years old and in first year at St Patrick’s High in Coatbridge. The day was spent in anticipation and excitement of the 5.30 kick-off. I was worried that maybe my dad wouldn’t make it home in time from his work in Ravenscraig. Worries over he got in just before kick off and mum had the dinner out just as the first whistle blew. We ate in front of the old Murphy’s black and white telly and I remember my dad’s dinner ending up on the floor 7 minutes in when that penalty was awarded.

In my heart I always knew we would win (youthful trust) while the longer the game went on my dad got more and more disheartened. Well as you all know we won that day and life was never the same for any Celtic supporter.

The addendum to my story goes like this. Three years later my dad came home from his local, Phil Coles the night Celtic had drawn Leeds in the semi final. He was a bit worse for wear and he and I had an argument. I was sure we would make the final in 1970 and he said Leeds would wipe the floor with us. For once I was glad he had a drink in him as he made a drunken promise. “If Celtic make the final, you can go” Sure enough he was true to his word and a couple of days after we had beaten Leeds he appeared home from Phil Coles with a wee red plastic wallet which I still have to this day. Inside was my plane ticket, hotel booking and yes a ticket for the final.

So there I was at 15 years old, off to MIlan on my own to see the European cup final. I also made Seville, Sad to say that I have seen Celtic in two European finals and they lost both. Although both great occasions they cannot compare to kneeling on front of the old telly watching the grainy black and white pictures listening to Kenneth Wolstenholme and Archie McPherson. Don’t tell the wife but probably still the greatest day of my life.

  22. And 9 years after that wonderful victory,I made the pilgrimage while on a Summer course at Lisbon University. A unique venue for a unique team! Just a beautiful setting for the beautiful game we played.

    Muito obrigado, Leões de Lisboa.

You have done a fantastic job bringing the Lions onto the blog. I hope they ( and you) realise how much it is appreciated!

You mentioned Big Tam liked a bit of company and wondered if there was any chance of having a cuppa and natter with him. I have my dad’s match programme and TG is one of the few Lions that haven’t signed it …

Can you fix it, If I promise to bring biccies and cake ? ;-)
