Abada indicates Postecoglou, McKay, direction

323

Celtic made the first significant spend of the Ange Postecoglou and Dom McKay era yesterday by splashing £3.5m on Israeli winger, Liel Abada.  The 19-year-old has made 48 career starts and 19 substitute appearances in senior football, all for Maccabi Petah Tikva.

After Liam Shaw (20) and Osaze Urhoghide (21 this month) joined from Sheffield Wednesday for training compensation fees, Abada’s signing is further indication that Celtic are intent on developing a team, rather than attempting to buy finished articles (like the definitely finished Shane Duffy).  Two years from now, we should see the benefits of this approach, but as you know, there is a lot of football to be played before then.

What can you tell about a player who has played as few games as Liel, all of them in Israel?  Israeli football is not a backwater, it is strong enough to test a teenage talent but the volume written about 48 starts will be a short book.  With added travel restrictions, we can be sure he has not been watched often.

We are in familiar territory in signing players after so few appearances.  Virgil van Dijk made 63 starts before signing for Celtic.  Since then, the window before players with speculative potential reach eye-watering prices has shrunk.  If we left Liel another year, we may find his progressed stalled, or that he has moved out our price range.  We are going to kiss a lot of frogs when shopping in this sector, which is OK.

I had hoped Leigh Griffiths would remain at Celtic this season and was pleased when he signed a new one-year deal earlier this month – what feels like a long time ago.  For me, yesterday’s news that he will not face criminal proceedings does not restore his position as a Celtic player.  Better for all that he finds a new club as soon as possible.

Remember being at the return leg and I’m sure we missed a sitter with a couple of minutes to go to win on away goals ….

  3. Signing Abada on a 5 year contract suggests we’re looking at keeping him at Celtic beyond the usual couple of years before selling him on

Fits with Paul’s suggestion of building for the future

Has anyone on here applied for any of the job roles on offer ?

    Nope most over qualified😂

  5. Super bit of business by Celtic ( paid £650,000 ) and identified through Ronny Deila.

With only one year left on his contract, ( as noted by Bada Bing ) and the Celtic sell on clause no doubt ensured, we can move on with a player happy to earn within the structure of what we can afford on wages, in our wee diddy league.

The Celtic jersey does not shrink to fit any wantaway CSC

  6. Kris came in for £250,000.

Will leave for upwards of £13,000,000.

Thats the problem right there with projects and Lawwells moneyball approach.

    Shambles.

not forgetting eithir he only played 170 games for us this last 3 seasons.

Shite in the air, and canny pass.

Ironically and I never knew this, his middlename is FASSBACK, some sort of Norwegian pisstake, he should be called SMALLJUMP.

  7. Needs to be a blend of youth and experience or else it’s just our previous strategy on speed.

  9. The Artmedia return night. really was one of thosethat I went with hope in my heart and kept thinking we can do this, we cant be that rubbish again.

    close but no cigar.

  10. I was never a fan of big ajer , but fair play to the lad he was one of only a few who played well last season and stuck to the task. Never a fan of his big soft as putty sidekick either , I aired my opinion On the twin towers ages ago , but if I had my pick of the two kris ajer would be it . Read a few posts from other Celtic sites with regards to the swede we are tracking from Russian football , reports mainly good but comments have been made with regards his Ariel ability , that’s a worry for me ,being able to win Ariel duels is a centre half must have . Still concern regards the CH position , full backs and striking departments . And the time taken to rectify these weak areas in the team , so far wee sore and the new boy shaw have showed up well but taking the points from last nights game we need some hardness , some steel in the team , Bristol city were a bit rough which showed in us losing wee dembele , wee Bertie ,aitken , or Davy hay would have had a slice of retribution to make the guy think again , We have no one yet capable . Looks like things have gone to slow for us to impact on the CL , not surprising is it , after all its the way Celtic do business HH

  11. SAINT STIVS @ 6:06 PM,

As has been mentioned Ronny new Ajer, he was a very sought after youth, Celtic managed to secure him because Kris had a huge regard for Ronny.

KA went on a fast track development plan from the youth team, which included top class coaching from RD’s team and BR’s team and some first team experience as a loanee.

He was around the first team at a young age and got a lot of first team experience.

I can’t think of a single player who is less of a typical Big Pedro moneyball signing.

In fact most professional Clubs would, scout, sign and nurture their talent in the way we did for Big Kris.

Let’s face it, Kris is the exception rather than the rule, and your little sniddy comments are typical of what much of CQN has become.

    Aye ok

  14. what’s not to like? we make 15m on a defender who can’t deliver the number one requirement – jump and clear with the head.

We must find a central defender to dominate defense and attacking areal battles – Ajer, Julien, Duffy, fullbacks can’t do that (can’t = capability) .

Ronny Delia had left Celtic when Ajer started

  17. Celtic40me

That’s correct, though it’s wrong to suggest the signing was unrelated to Ronny

“CELTIC new boy Kristoffer Ajer insists he isn’t bothered his mentor Ronny Deila is leaving the Parkhead club because he thought he would go at the end of the season anyway.

The Norwegian wonderkid has just five games left for Start before he moves to Scotland.

He agreed to sign for Deila in a £750,000 move, but will have to impress a new manager when he arrives in Glasgow.

But the 18-year-old midfielder insists the departure of his countryman won’t hinder him at Celtic”

  18. “ And one youngster that the Norwegian boss brought to the club, fellow countryman Kris Ajer, has developed into the most outstanding central defender at the club, a star in their national team and a possible future captain for both club and country.”

    @CelticStar

  19. Moneyball successes –

Scouted, bought low, sold high, just the same as Ajer, he aint no exception, he is one of the success stories of the model. Yes, complimented by RD, but if RD was on our radar for the coaching position I am sure we knew about Ajer the player as well.

Rememher he was put on on loan. So who improved him in the earlty days, the Killie staff ? Took an injury to Simo to get him a break at Celtic Park.

    ————————–

Frimpong (17) bought £342,000 , sold £9,900,000 (from city an awe)

Moussa (20) compo £500,000 , sold £19,900,000 (took an injury to others to get him rightin the team).

all the way back to Wanyama.

Offc ourse I am aware there are 3-4 sometime more misses every season as well.

  20. FB,

tasnfermarket, usually with real numbers – it quotes£250,000 as development fee, so it must have some back up.

  21. wait for the meltdown when Kris comes out and thanks Neil and John for improving him during his time at lennoxtown.
