Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic

1425

It was an unfamiliar Celtic starting line-up at Pittodrie this afternoon which resulted in the visitors dropping league points for the first time in four months.  Andre Blackman and Mikael Lustig made their Celtic debuts at left and right back respectively, while Charlie Mulgrew played central midfield alongside Joe Ledley.

Neither full back got forward as often as we are accustomed to see Celtic play, which perhaps contributed to the disjointed performance.

Charlie Mulgrew almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes when his swerving free kick rebounded back off the inside of Jason Brown’s far post in Celtic’s only genuine chance before the 28th minute goal.  Mulgrew was key again in the move that counted, controlling a difficult ball before twisting his marker and knocking the ball forward to Kris Commons.  Commons spun before playing a perfectly weighted pass into space inside the box for Anthony Stokes to run onto.  Stokes first touch took the ball past Brown in the Aberdeen goal before he slotted his shot into the net.

Aberdeen were well out of the contest in the first half and had to wait until near the end of the half before they managed an attempt at goal, a Fyvie shot which was blocked.  Then, only seconds from the break, a long ball forward to Fallon brought Aberdeen level.  Fallon turned and his forward run drew Blackman, Wilson and Rogne, leaving the right back space unattended.  Gavin Rae ran 70 yards to fill that space and fired a shot which was going narrowly wide before Blackman’s block bounced over Forster into the net.

A minute into the second half Ryan Jack almost reached a cross from the right as Aberdeen seemed to take encouragement from their goal.

Anthony Stokes looked Celtic’s best player but whenever he linked with strike partner, Gary Hooper, the ball invariably bounced out of play or to an Aberdeen player, most notably on the 55th minute when Hooper failed to control on the edge of the six yard box.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win the game arrived on 63 minutes when Meganson evaded Lustig but shot wide when clean through inside the box.

Aside from his comments about a devalued title, I think Burley is a bit of a precipice in his commentating career.

When ‘any new face ‘ arrives on the commentating scene, they tend to get airspace because they are new, a different voice , a break from the established commentators etc.

They then reach a mass market stage where they either proceed to commentating superstardom e.g. Hansen , Townsend, or they disappear up their own jacksie and end up commentating on the Belgian second division and supplement their income with a column in the Rochdale advertiser.

Burley hclever himself out using the shock jock approach – fair enough , his decision.

But if you listened to his banal comments in the first half , and his attempts to have some first half banter about freebies (airmiles ?), then you realise how desperate, and how poor a commentator he is. As I watched on TV , I could hear Derek Rae cringe with embarrassment.

Last year, after , Andy Gray left Sky, they were looking for a new lead commentator. The fact they chose a guy with virtually no experience in Gary Neville, Whilst ignoring others with 2 years + experience, tells you all you need to know.

IMHO there is only one way forward for Burley – he has reached his precipice , and the downhill slope beckons.

  3. Kojo,

Perhaps Madmitch was one of the Bhoys who was onto a big win if Celtic won every game in the League this season.

I know I’d probably be pretty critical also if I was looking at such a big win. You are correct there is no need to slam the man because he stated his opinion.

Neil himself was obviously disappointed by the play at times.

  6. Kojo, I wouldnt doubt MM’s love for the club, but to have a pop at NL is in my opinion bang out of order. We’re now in a postion to not only win the league, but also on in a good position to win another 1 or 2 cups on top of that.

Frankly, to have a go at NL for today after where we’ve came from this season, is, in a word, MAD!

PS – apologies for the use of MM abreviations…..

It seems you think it was a huge mistake to make the subs on or before 67 mins, how does that square with you saying ‘Team was very flat in the 2nd half and nothing was done to improve things.’ Surely the using the subs shows something was done ?

Research has been done which I don’t have the link too but maybe others do ? that shows teams win more often when subs are used earlier.

Burley is a bitter, twisted wee man. The day he smirked behind dr jo’s back was the day he should have been punted out the door.

On a totally unrelated matter, if you think that you are worth a better contract and everyone else thinks your delusional that can make you quite bitter, if you get caught briefing mates in the meeja that can make twisted.

We’ll agree to disagree. Although in his recent performances I do actually agree with you more than disagree.

Here’s another thought given that Celtics games in March (including today’s) are

    Aberdeen (league)

    Dundee Utd (scottish cup)

    Kilmarnock (league cup)

    huns (league)

Given the choice, I know which one I would choose for Celtic to play poorly in and not win. Blip over, back to business next game.

  11. The weather was shite, the pitch was shite, the ref was shite, the sheep were shite…and we played poorly. However….we scored both goals & came away with a point…in some quarters that would be called a result!

It’s deckchair time…jelly & ice cream, then a wee siesta ; mebbe wake up to hear Rankers have been gubbed @ Mordor.

Why are all the journalists obsessed with the March 31st deadline for them coming out of administration?

Even if they did they still need to have audited accounts signed off without them being qualified….of that there is no chance.

  18. Kojo, I’m a little perplexed!

I’ve often read your posts here where you’ve made it clear that you believe everyone should be able to freely express their opinion. Yet today you’ve told some to desist from expressing their opinion on Madmitch’s opinion, who is only expressing his opinion.

Now, just so we’re clear, I’m not telling you not express your opinion on others expressing their opinion of Madmitch’s opinion, but simply wishing to ascertain whether you believe that others should freely express their opinions, or should desist from such. As your opinion (expressed freely) on the matter could be viewed as contradictory.

    Yours, a fan.

  19. I presume madmitch is attempting humour…..?

It was a rubbish game but it comes at the end of 3 months of really entertaining football so I will forgive them.

As for subs and so on. Well I feel a bit sorry that Blackman and Lustig had to get their chance on a small crap pitch on a bad day with tired team-mates…and against a Craig Brown formation- but needs must. If not now..when? Hopefully both will get a run out at CP again this season.

McGeouch never seemed to get on the ball when he came on – seems comfortable with the ball but not combative on todays showing. Has anyone else seen more of him?

Wanyama as ever made sure he got on the ball.

Heavy rain on a pitch with a firm ground underneath, made it tricky day for a passing game, and so it proved. Could still have won it mind you, when Forrest skewed wide late on he had Stokes moving to his left and Hooper to his right, but young James did not see the better option. The changes and set-up did not help, but credit to Aberdeen for their effort in the second half. A reminder perhaps that we have not won anything yet, not the League, not the League Cup and with a Scottish Cup tie at Tannadice next week, not the Cup either!

  27. I blame myself. Wasn’t able to get on CQN in time to say “Come on you Bhoys in Green”. When I started saying that before the match it coincided with our 20 game winning streak. I jinxed the team! Sorry.
