Aberdeen 1-1 Celtic

1425

It was an unfamiliar Celtic starting line-up at Pittodrie this afternoon which resulted in the visitors dropping league points for the first time in four months.  Andre Blackman and Mikael Lustig made their Celtic debuts at left and right back respectively, while Charlie Mulgrew played central midfield alongside Joe Ledley.

Neither full back got forward as often as we are accustomed to see Celtic play, which perhaps contributed to the disjointed performance.

Charlie Mulgrew almost opened the scoring on 5 minutes when his swerving free kick rebounded back off the inside of Jason Brown’s far post in Celtic’s only genuine chance before the 28th minute goal.  Mulgrew was key again in the move that counted, controlling a difficult ball before twisting his marker and knocking the ball forward to Kris Commons.  Commons spun before playing a perfectly weighted pass into space inside the box for Anthony Stokes to run onto.  Stokes first touch took the ball past Brown in the Aberdeen goal before he slotted his shot into the net.

Aberdeen were well out of the contest in the first half and had to wait until near the end of the half before they managed an attempt at goal, a Fyvie shot which was blocked.  Then, only seconds from the break, a long ball forward to Fallon brought Aberdeen level.  Fallon turned and his forward run drew Blackman, Wilson and Rogne, leaving the right back space unattended.  Gavin Rae ran 70 yards to fill that space and fired a shot which was going narrowly wide before Blackman’s block bounced over Forster into the net.

A minute into the second half Ryan Jack almost reached a cross from the right as Aberdeen seemed to take encouragement from their goal.

Anthony Stokes looked Celtic’s best player but whenever he linked with strike partner, Gary Hooper, the ball invariably bounced out of play or to an Aberdeen player, most notably on the 55th minute when Hooper failed to control on the edge of the six yard box.

Aberdeen’s best chance to win the game arrived on 63 minutes when Meganson evaded Lustig but shot wide when clean through inside the box.

The chance of treble is why I don’t find a performance like today’s acceptable.

    Huge game against DU.

It is the best chance the SFA Ludge have of putting a spoke in the wheels.

We need to work hard to keep the team on the up.

Poor, partial performances like today upset the team’s rythme.

    The team selection was awkward.

The handling of the match was poor.

Consequently the manager has to take the blame.

We are a football team not a sect or a personality cult.

    PS

It was people like me who kept you out of the firing line.

As the Lions found out in 09 it is bad for morale to have a fat ex No.8 being waved about like a flag by a true front row craftsman.

Starting with D/dee Uni in 86 you owe me a lot.

  3. The Comfortable Collective on

Centre forwards get more scrutiny than any other position (except perhaps goalkeeper), and I think it is then logical, given that people see the same thing from different perspectives, that people’s perceptions of the same guy can be so different.

But, people having different opinions really is what makes a site like this great reading.

I remember thinking about 4 years ago, that if you could transfer the football brain of Scott McDonald into the physical body of George Samaras, what a world class striker that would be.

Scott was clinical in his thinking and ability to be in the right place at the right time, but with the pace and strength of Georges physique, what a combination.

  4. DUSHANBE BHILLY BHOY on

Kojo….. I just love surprises, but not unpleasant ones that would involve complacency creeping into the performances of our beloved hoops between now and season end. You may already know me…..Speakers Corner bar, Charing X, early 80s, or Glasgow Uni CSC?

    HH,

DBB… (en route from Dushanbe to Dublin for Simple Minds concert tomorrow night).

  5. I thought we should have started with Vic W. He bossed the game when he came on. Tommy Rogne had an excellent game apart from the mistake for the Dons goal.

Kris Commons one decent pass but just not in it at all and i just do not see why NL perseveres with him, Hoops? does he have a Doppelganger that can’t trap a ball? Anto Stokes – efficient and took his goal well, Chas Mulgrew good game, Lustig and Blackman – i’ll need to see more of them. Joe Ledley quiet, FF nothing do do, Wilson efficient, JF all over the place and not the type of performance we have come to expect from him. McGeough did nothing when he came on.

IMO we missed the drive of Bronnie and Sammi.

Never the less another point closer to the title and well done Lenny for outing those annoying Unlce Tims.

    Most definately a Tim mate.

  9. Taken from BBC text commentary at I’mBrokes. Sounds exciting so far:

  10. macjay1 for Neil Lennon on

Lenny picked the wrong team only if you have the privilege of judging his choice in retrospect.

    As we do.

    Wisdom after the event.

    Lenny,my son,thunder is back.

    Thank you.

  11. Was a poor game on a parks pitch.

When the sfa reform comes playing surfaces should be first on the agenda.

Our tactics had a lot to do with our performance today so coaches have to take responsibility.

Brother Thomson was as always consistent so perhaps Scottish refs need to have are refresher course in the actual rules or alternatively the new Scottish football authority could actually employ competent refs.

  12. The bubble was bound to burst at some stage – it’s always annoying at the time. Funnily enough I thought back today to when MON’s side lost their run to Dundee (it annoyed me for weeks) – but hey we won the title and it was consigned to history.

I am sure Lenny will shuffle the pack between now and the end of the season when the opportunity arises. However, I do expect him to get it right when it matters in key games this coming month.

We’ve got plenty to look forward to – pointless holding inquests!

  17. It would have been nice to see paddy McCourt.. but my head tells me on todays pitch he wouldn’t have done much except bounce the balls of his shin and run into 3 guys surrounding him.

  19. We lost 2 points today and a domestic winning record that counts for diddly squat.

Our 2 big games ahead are the Scottish Cup tie next Sunday and the League Cup final in 2 weeks time.

Even if we were to lose to the Huns (in administration) on the 25th, my disappointment will be considerably eased if we win these 2 cup matches.

The manager may or may not have mistakes today what is not in doubt is that he has steered us to the position we are in today.

A draw at the sheep pen today does not change that.
