Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic

884

Celtic blitzed Aberdeen with three goals in the opening 11 minutes in what at that stage looked set to be a drubbing, but the hosts pulled a goal back in the 12th minute, which set a parity for the remainder of the match.

Leigh Griffiths has had to be patient this season but he made the most of his starting opportunity tonight. The opening goal, came from his corner, which was headed into the net by Dedryck Boyata. Patrick Roberts had a clear chance to open the scoring seconds earlier, but Aberdeen keeper Lewis turned his effort behind.

unspecified-55

The second Celtic goal arrived on the 8th minute. There was nothing really on when Griffiths collected the ball wide on the right, but one cheeky nutmeg later and the Aberdeen defence were chasing shadows. Leigh crossed and Callum McGregor fired a shot which was blocked by Logan. The rebound fell to Stuart Armstrong, who contorted his body to make a contact good enough to score.

Again, there was little obvious danger when Leigh Griffiths collected the ball 30 yards out in 11 minutes. The Celtic striker took on two defenders before cracking a shot from 24 yards, which moved and deceived Lewis before smacking the back of the net.

At this point Celtic looked more likely to score six than to settle for three, but, remarkably, the fourth goal of the game arrived just a minute later, when Jonny Hayes lost Kieran Tierney with a quick change of direction before thundering one into the top corner from 23 yards.

unspecified-54

It was now Celtic’s turn to rock. Perhaps the game’s most important subsequent moment came after just 14 minutes when Stockley lost the Celtic central defenders, but couldn’t make contact with a cross 7 yards in front of goal.

Celtic’s passing in recent weeks has been exceptional, but they didn’t get this right on a choppy Pittodrie surface, as the unforced error count spiked. The ball rotation we have become used to seeing this season didn’t happen often, underlining the importance of suspended Scott Brown.

Celtic top 100 points with defeat of Aberdeen

    The Scotsman: STEPHEN HALLIDAY

Brendan Rodgers hailed his Celtic players for what he describes as the “incredible” achievement of reaching 100 points in the Scottish Premiership this season after their 3-1 win over Aberdeen at Pittodrie.

Three goals in the first 11 minutes from Dedryck Boyata, Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths saw the champions stretch their unbeaten run in domestic football this season to 44 games. Celtic, who are also now just one short of 100 league goals for the campaign, remain on course to break their own record of 103 points set by Martin O’Neill’s side in 2002.

“It’s an incredible achievement,” said Rodgers. “Our targets going into the game tonight were ‘Could we get 100 points and could we get 100 goals?’

“The way we started by getting three, I thought we might get the four goals we needed. One of our targets in pre-season was to get 100-plus goals so hopefully we can go on and achieve that in the final two league games. “

To get 100 points with two games remaining shows the level, the quality and, most of all, the focus of the team. I think people are waiting for the game where we go soft and lose our focus. But that’s not the case.

We are preparing every single day for every single game, to train the best we can and win. “It was a brilliant win for us. It’s a tough place to come but we had a great start to the game. We scored three very good goals and looked a real threat any time we went forward and broke their defensive line.

“The context of the game changed a little bit when they got it to 3-1. But I’m really, really proud of our team tonight because we had to withstand it against a team who went very direct. There was no sequence of passes, it was from the keeper or back four, everything direct or long ball.”

Aberdeen manager Derek McInnes was upset by referee Steven McLean’s refusal to give his side a penalty early in the second half when Graeme Shinnie went down under Craig Gordon’s challenge. “It was ridiculous,” said McInnes. “It was a penalty kick every day of the week. It’s a foul every day of the week in any other area of the pitch. Gordon’s hesitant and Shinnie’s managed to get a touch and Gordon clatters into him. “It’s a big decision and we needed a big referee to give it and we didn’t get it. At that time we could have cranked it up even more.”

Rodgers had some sympathy with McInnes’ viewpoint but ultimately backed McLean’s call. “I can see both sides,” said Rodgers. “If you are Derek, you want it. Craig thought he got a touch on it and that it should be a corner.”

Aberdeen 1 Celtic 3: Champions rampage past the 100-point mark

    The Telegraph: Roddy Forsyth

In what was billed as a dress rehearsal for the William Hill Scottish Cup final between these sides, Celtic were taking curtain calls after all of 11 minutes, during which a rampaging start saw them run up a 3-0 lead with goals from Dedryck Boyata, Stuart Armstrong and Liegh Griffiths.

Jonny Hayes’ swift rejoinder, a cool strike in the 13th minute, averted a mutiny amongst the red ranks in the stands, but there can be no illusions about what fate will await Derek McInnes’s players if they are as sluggish again when they take the field against the champions at Hampden Park on May 21.

Celtic’s impressive statistics were extended in a memorable conjunction. This victory took their league points total to 100 and their scoring tally to 99 goals.

After only 11 minutes, Pittodrie witnessed a spectacle which might well have had no precedent in the Scottish game as latecomers to the Aberdeen sections encountered disgusted fellow supporters making their way to the exits and then, as the two groups tried to find a route past each other, Jonny Hayes had them uniting in exaltation when he scored a fine goal to give the Dons hope, albeit of the vestigial sort.

Celtic’s start had unquestionably been spectacular but it was aided greatly by Aberdeen’s negligence. Assuming that the Dons had done their homework on the Hoops’ likely threats, the only conclusion could be that they had forgotten the lessons promptly. How else can one explain their failure to mark Boyata at the corner kick they conceded inside the first minute, when Callum McGregor freed Patrick Roberts for a shot which Joe Lewis turned around his post?

Boyata had scored with headers from corner kicks in Celtic’s two most recent games, away to Rangers and at home to St Johnstone yet, when Griffiths swung in his delivery, his central defensive colleague was permitted a free contact almost below the crossbar to put the champions ahead. The travelling supporters were still in full voice when Celtic doubled their advantage with a move which started on their left when Griffiths prompted McGregor for a shot that rebounded from Shay Logan into the path of Armstrong, who took a touch and then found the mark with a rising effort off his right boot.

Celtic now resembled ravenous lions who had cornered a herd of wildebeest at a waterhole and next it was Griffiths’ turn to sink his fangs into the helpless prey when Aberdeen allowed him an unhindered sight of goal from 22 yards, to which he responded with a whipped drive past the disgusted Lewis.

Miraculously, the Dons were able to summon sufficient resistance to find the net at the other end of the field with their first real foray into the Celtic half, a move which Hayes graced with a sweet curling effort beyond Craig Gordon from the edge of the area. That steadied the home team for a spell in which they were the dominant attacking force and, had Jayden Stockley been on target with a header which skipped just wide, they would have opened the issue again. It also required a fine instinctive block by Gordon to stop Niall McGinn scoring from a loose ball 12 yards out.

Aberdeen began the second half as they should have started the first and – as mist and driving rain scoured the ground from the North Sea – they should have had a penalty kick when Gordon, bolting from his line to block a thrust by Graeme Shinnie, caught the Aberdeen captain just after he had touched the ball. It was a tough call for Steven McLean, who would have been obliged to show a red card to the goalkeeper for preventing a clear goal scoring opportunity, but the wrath of the Dons fans was inevitable when he signalled a goal kick.

The referee’s decision added to a growing edge which manifested itself in cautions administered to Shinnie, Tierney and Griffiths, although the latter’s infringement was a pantomime turn as he responded to the signal that he was to be replaced by James Forrest as an invitation to amble along the halfway line, pausing regularly to gather stray blades of grass. He was shown the yellow card after he reached the bench, despite a theatrical protest by Brendan Rodgers, the Celtic manager.

Aberdeen suffer defeat to Celtic in Scottish Cup final dress rehearsal

The Press and Journal: by DANNY LAW

Aberdeen were unable to inflicting a first domestic defeat of the season on Scottish Premiership champions Celtic as the Hoops recorded a 3-1 victory at Pittodrie.

Celtic raced into an early lead with Dedryck Boyata, Stuart Armstrong and Leigh Griffiths all taking advantage of some shaky Aberdeen defending with only 11 minutes played.

Jonny Hayes pulled one back for the Dons a minute later in an action-packed start to the encounter.

It was the first time Aberdeen had lost three successive matches at Pittodrie since October 2008, having enjoyed a formidable record on their own turf for the majority of the campaign.

Victory took Celtic to the 100 point mark – 30 points ahead of the second-place Dons – and kept their hopes of completing the season without a single domestic defeat on track.

The Dons made two changes from the team that defeated Hearts 2-1 with Jayden Stockley given the nod to lead the line in place of top scorer Adam Rooney, while Anthony O’Connor replaced the injured Peter Pawlett.

Derek McInnes named four teenagers on the bench, including 16-year-old Dean Campbell, a pupil at Hazlehead Academy.

Aberdeen had won all seven of their Premiership matches played on a Friday but had gone 55 league games without a clean sheet against Celtic, who named their strongest possible team with Leigh Griffiths leading the line.

It was a disastrous start for the Dons as they fell behind with only three minutes on the clock when a Leigh Griffitths corner was nodded home by defender Boyata.

It went from bad to worse as Celtic doubled their advantage with only eight minutes gone when Stuart Armstrong slotted home after Callum McGregor’s low drive was blocked by Shay Logan.

The Reds were reeling and fell further behind after only 11 minutes when a long range drive from Griffiths squirmed through Joe Lewis and into the net in a moment to forget for the usually reliable Dons number one.

Aberdeen, to their credit, mustered an immediate response and pulled one back with an exquisite strike from Hayes from the edge of the area.

And they really should have made it 3-2 when Jayden Stockley headed wide from a tantalising Kenny McLean cross with the goal gaping.

The Dons felt mightily aggrieved four minutes after the break when Graeme Shinnie went down following a reckless challenge from Celtic goalkeeper Gordon but referee Steven McLean opted against pointing to the spot.

With 62 minutes gone and the Dons dominating play, McInnes made his first change by bringing on Rooney for Stockley in a bid to get the goal that would set up a rousing finale.

The hosts had a great chance to score the crucial next goal with just over 20 minutes to go but McLean’s composure deserted him as he blasted over with only Gordon to beat.

Celtic were inches away from a fourth – and their 100th of the campaign – when Scott Sinclair curled just wide with McGinn going close at the other end with a powerful effort.

Campbell became the youngest player to feature for the Aberdeen first team at the age of 16 years one month and 23 days when he replaced McGinn in injury time.

  13. Brendan spoke about the poor state of the pitch BEFORE the game last night.

Brendan spoke about the excellent pitch for the Cup Final AFTER the game last night.

IMO, that better surface and our Captain being back will be a huge advantage to Celtic, apart from us having superior players of course !

I thought our Bhoys like Rogic, Cal and Armstrong were getting a bit bogged down after the first 20 minutes or so last night, and this allowed Aberdeen to get tight in our faces in midfield………………………That WILL NOT happen at Hampden imo.

The Dons will be very wary of Celtic flying out of the traps just like last night and will be set up to keep it as tight as possible early on, but we can take them early, and force them to come out.

Bhoyata could easily have had a hat trick in the 1st half last night, plus their goalie had a couple of good saves in the 1st half, we could have been 5/5 up at half time…let’s make sure of this in the Cup Final.

Scott Sinclair was unlucky with his effort in the 2nd half, but I have been saying for the last few games that he needs NEW Shooting Boots !

As for LOGAN…………………..funny how Celtic players were accused of “Goading” the hun support after scoring at Ipox……………………and yet here we have an Aberdeen player going out his way to “GOAD” Celtic fans when taking a feckin throw in, where was the Polis ?

No doubt, if any Celtic fans had seriously reacted to Logan’s conduct, he would be claiming to be the “VICTIM” of all forms of abuse……………I hope he plays at hampden and Sinky and KT “roast” him BIG TIME for 90 minutes !

  20. See Awe Naw was back on writing as Matthew Lindsay @4.02.

In Roddy Forsyths febrile Hun mind @4.26 not only should Steven Mc Lean awarded a penalty but also been “obliged” to issue a red card because it was a clear goal scoring opportunity.

Much debate on the penalty on here last night but whatever anyone thinks it certainly wasn’t a clear goal scoring opportunity given Shinnies first “touch”. Anyway somebody needs to tell Roddy the rules have changed.

Football writers that don’t know the rules…who would have thunk it. I feel your pain Roddy hahahahaaaaaa. Thanks to A Sthor for posting as it stops people purchasing this garbage.

Up the hooops and up the Rebs.

Well done to Declan McConville on the match report, keep at the writing, we need plenty of decent sports journalists, as a country we have virtually none :-)

Dallas, how did Dallas junior get on in cup final last night ?

  29. Interesting read on video Celts this morning :-

“There are doubts over the Europa League participation of Sevco this morning due to updates on UEFA’s participation list.

Over 400 clubs are listed with their co-efficient value for next season with no sign of a club from

    Ibrox “

  30. Hunderbirds are Gone on

You have got to laugh at the P&J. Celtic’s third goal from Leigh Griffiths and Aberdeens… eh…. goal, from Jonny Hayes, were both spectacular efforts from outside the box. Griffiths’ effort was a fearsome drive that arrowed right through the keeper into the net. Hayes’ rejoinder was a more deft effort that he curled above, and beyond, the desperate clutching hands of our keeper.

These are the sort of goals that fans pay good money to see. Both spectacular, both from outside the box. Griffiths showed tremendous skill and was accurate and powerful from a difficult angle. Hayes showed good feet to fashion himself the room, for a carefully executed curling shot that gave the keeper no chance.

Watch both of these goals again, both goal of the season class, and if I were a better wordsmith, I could fashion thousands of words to communicate their skill and beauty.

Hard to separate or measure against each other? You bet!

But not for the P&J correspondent.

“The Reds were reeling and fell further behind after only 11 minutes when a long range drive from Griffiths squirmed through Joe Lewis and into the net in a moment to forget for the usually reliable Dons number one.”

“Aberdeen, to their credit, mustered an immediate response and pulled one back with an exquisite strike from Hayes from the edge of the area.”

    “Squirmed”. “Exquisite”.

    Lol :)))
