Aberdeen 1-3 Celtic

884

Celtic blitzed Aberdeen with three goals in the opening 11 minutes in what at that stage looked set to be a drubbing, but the hosts pulled a goal back in the 12th minute, which set a parity for the remainder of the match.

Leigh Griffiths has had to be patient this season but he made the most of his starting opportunity tonight. The opening goal, came from his corner, which was headed into the net by Dedryck Boyata. Patrick Roberts had a clear chance to open the scoring seconds earlier, but Aberdeen keeper Lewis turned his effort behind.

unspecified-55

The second Celtic goal arrived on the 8th minute. There was nothing really on when Griffiths collected the ball wide on the right, but one cheeky nutmeg later and the Aberdeen defence were chasing shadows. Leigh crossed and Callum McGregor fired a shot which was blocked by Logan. The rebound fell to Stuart Armstrong, who contorted his body to make a contact good enough to score.

Again, there was little obvious danger when Leigh Griffiths collected the ball 30 yards out in 11 minutes. The Celtic striker took on two defenders before cracking a shot from 24 yards, which moved and deceived Lewis before smacking the back of the net.

At this point Celtic looked more likely to score six than to settle for three, but, remarkably, the fourth goal of the game arrived just a minute later, when Jonny Hayes lost Kieran Tierney with a quick change of direction before thundering one into the top corner from 23 yards.

unspecified-54

It was now Celtic’s turn to rock. Perhaps the game’s most important subsequent moment came after just 14 minutes when Stockley lost the Celtic central defenders, but couldn’t make contact with a cross 7 yards in front of goal.

Celtic’s passing in recent weeks has been exceptional, but they didn’t get this right on a choppy Pittodrie surface, as the unforced error count spiked. The ball rotation we have become used to seeing this season didn’t happen often, underlining the importance of suspended Scott Brown.

Great great story of Jimmy and his T shirt in Lisbon.

I wonder if Jimmy McConnell met my Da ( Jimmy) and all his Taxi mates who drove to Lisbon from Glasgow ?

Sadly, I can’t ask my Da, as he’s in a bad way for some time now.

Well Done Jimmy McConnell. Champions of Europe !

Gerry, they lost 4 3 to Trinity from Rutherglen.

His team went one nil up after 5 minutes , were on top for the next fifteen , then conceded against the run of play. His team went two one up just before half time.

In the second half , the Trinity centre forward (he was as well built as Anthony Ralston) completed his hat trick . Trinity”‘s right back was then sent off but it was they who looked the better team and got their fourth.

With two minutes to go, Trinity conceded a penalty with their centre half getting a straight red. The penalty was scored . Trinity deserved their win.

Junior came on as a sub for the last ten minutes.

I hope the dons show as much aggression and attitude at Ibrox next week and end their near 26 year wait for a win there.

I watched our match highlights on the BBC website. To me Shinnie was the one who made contact with Craig but being honest , if one of players and Lewis collided like that, I would shout for the penalty.

I hope tommorrow’s weather is better than today’sfor the wee yin’s first holy communion.

  6. Apologies that I haven’t been able to issue the usual ‘who has picked whom’ details for this round of Goals For Shay but 5 slowcoaches have still to send in their choice. And as I’m aff oot to a Holy Communion in 5 it’ll be mid afternoon at least before I can check again.

Enjoy your day. And ‘mon the Kilby!!

  7. Penalty ?

I would welcome anybody to show me ” A Rule” that says that Player A, MUST not run across Player B’s path ?

Craig Gordon ( Player A), was fully entitled to come out and across Shinnies path in an effort to get the ball, What happened next is perfectly clear, Shinnie got the slightest of touches to the ball whilst stretching a fraction of a second before Craig got there, however…..Shinnie had NOT ONLY lost control of the ball, he had also lost control of his movement/body which caused his momentum to carry him into Craig Gordon.

If any player hit the other, it was Shinnie who hit Craig.

Purely accidental, hence why Shinnie was unable to stop himself, cos of his momentum.

    SIMPLES !

I thought that Celtic allowed them far too many cross’s into our penalty area throughout the game, but I FULLY EXPECT the Cup Final to be a much better show from Celtic.

I will not hesitate to have bets on Celtic at the Bookies of 4..5…6 and SEVEN (7) – nil to The Celts on the day.

On the game last night I have never known a first ten minutes like it, watched some of the Brendan interview with Chris Sutton this morning think the extended version is on BT sports 1 tomorrow at 13.45pm…….. I think even big Sutty gets a bit starry-eyed around our fabulous manager

  10. My friends in Celtic,

At the end of the day it’s a great result on the worst pitch in the league. Our games are fabulous to watch which is almost equally important.

As for the sheep ” penalty ” : Well if the referee had refused us similar I would be calling him for everything.

    HH. The journey continues.

  11. I love Big Sutty as a Celtic player and BT Pundit, although I don’t ALWAYS agree with him ( last nights penalty claim ?),.

I wish BT Sport would DUMP that nobody Stephen Craigan, he is a complete waste of space, who will say anything to get in on the act, he’s full of cliches and whenever he’s asked about a Ross County player ( for example)…..another nobody, Craigan will attempt to convince you that the player is “Great”, or is fabulous etc etc blah blah feckin blah.

I would love to ask numpties like Craigan who call obvious mediocre players ” Great” etc, how he would describe Messi etc ?

I hope his M’Well get relegated.

Gerry, Im pleased everything is sorted for tomorrow. . Its a big day with all the organisation and dedication will pay off.

He came on to a huge cheer from his pals who were there. He ended up at left back .

The Dons , according to the match stats on the BBC , only had 3 shots on target and had less possession than we did plus the most important stat of all, only scored one goal to our three.

  14. Paddy replacement? Great wee player, would fit into our way of playing and a top class manager could improve him.

Ryan Gauld is set to be shown the door by Sporting Clube de Portugal – with the Portuguese club seeking to recoup their outlay on the former Dundee United ace.

Sporting paid the Arabs £3million for Gauld in 2014 after the midfielder had earned comparisons to Lionel Messi. But the 21-year-old has struggled to find his best form in Portugal.

He was loaned to Vitoria Setubal last summer. Sporting coach Jorge Jesus recalled him in January, but has mostly left him in the Lisbon club’s B team. A potential move to top-flight newcomers Desportivo Chaves fell through.

Gauld won two first-team callups last month, but was an unused sub on both occasions.

Reports in the Portuguese capital now claim that Sporting will seek to cut their losses on the Scotland Under-21 star this summer. He is under contract at the Jose Alvalade Stadium until 2020, and has a buy-out clause of £50m. But Sporting will gladly accept any chance simply to get their money back on Aberdeen-born Gauld, whose dream move to Portugal is instead heading towards a nightmare.

  16. On here the other day, the majority of folk who posted said that Celtic would NOT become involved in the event that the Supreme Court Case etc etc, and that Celtic will still say nothing about anything ?

I am going to go against that majority and say “YES”…Celtic will have something to say about the Cheating that has went on.

  18. Morning all

First of apologies to GFTB for getting my moniker wrong in my sign off last night- I had only had one and a half beers by then so a pathetic show by me

Really enjoyed reading Jimmy McConnell’s story as relayed to Winning Captains. I think because the game itself has remained so fresh in our memories and holidays and matches abroad so commonplace that it is easy to forget just what a big thing it was for the supporters to travel such a distance in those times and the sacrifices that had to be made. Fantastic stuff and a design classic into the bargain.

This is my 50th season of going to matches and it is, as I have said before, already one of the four favourites personally since my first immortal five (76/7, 87/8 and 2000/1 are the others since the glories of 67-72). This week was like being 8 again as I found myself getting increasingly nervous before a big game- I know the Treble is the thing but I am now desperate for us to do the whole unbeaten season thing now. Butterfies already going for Thursday. We might well get even better over the next two years but maybe just because it’s a personal milestone this year seems unique.

Penalty last night? Probably though keepers do seeem to get away with things more if the ball is off the ground than on it. One you shout for but I have seen worse decisions.

    Anyway things to do.

  19. Great first 11 mins yesterday followed by some nervous defending which was reminiscent of some European performances. For the most part I thought Aberdeen played well while we went into a shell for most of the game, that I thought was curious though it guess we are defending a potentially remarkable achievement.

I thought they should have had a pen. But it wasn’t a clear cut thing.

What I think is good about yesterday is that it will encourage Aberdeen to go on the attack at Hampdump which will play into our hands.

The manager of The Estadio Nacional is a Benfica fan. He is not really that big on football but he is a supporter of The Benfica Club whose football team won two league championships under Jorge Jesus before Jesus was “stolen” by Sporting.

He waa unequivocal in stating that “Jesus is undoubtedly one of the most stupid coaches in sport! “We won two league titles in spite of him, not because of him. His press conferences could be sold out many times over if they were ticket events because he is likely to say anything and everything that is totally mad.

He knows nothing about football, and it shows, but he is good with the media because he is a clown of the first order. Tactically and in business, he is a buffoon — and I said that before he went to sporting.”

Right now Sporting are in a state. They lost to another local club for the first time in 67 years recently and his future is “uncertain”.

By the way, this guy had barely heard of Pedro Caixinha and said that if you look at Jesus, Mourinho and many others you should always expect Portuguese coaches to say completely crazy things at press conferences. In the main they make no sense at all.

  21. thats a world class list of lisbon attendees.

BRTH, your some man organising all of that.

  22. BRTH

I seem to remember Jesus slagging us off as a team of cloggers who got lucky in CL whilst Lenny was manager.

The reason he recalled Gauld was because Setubal beat them in the cup and he threw his toys out of the pram.

  23. I would love us to keep Paddy

    But if not

Is Jonny Hayes not out of contract, has a fair left peg, and a decent left back as well ?

    Always impressed playing against us

Not seen enough of Ryan Gauld

    Hail Hail

  24. Another myth being pedalled. Not one player with a contract past this season has been released.

Miller is confident that Pedro Caixinha, the new Rangers manager who is in the process of releasing the individuals who he deems surplus to requirements and bringing in replacements capable of challenging for major honours, will be able to improve the quality of the squad and the performances of the team.

The only thing Pedro is in the process of doing is trying to handle the knock backs from players he would like.

Chris Union Jack right enough.Leading the ST charge.

Going by Millers havering,I think Jozos tackle did a lot more damage than we first thought.Landed on his head.

  25. I posted last night that, unusually for me, I wasn’t nervous before the game. That state changed completely after Hayes scored. So, I guess I still can’t relax when we’re playing, no matter the opposition.

  26. That’s one of the finest lists ever seen on CQN.

Indeed, on a grander scale, probably second only to the Lisbon Lions team list itself.

Comfortably sitting inbetween that and an index of Nobel Peace Prize winners….

  28. seems like the 2nd rangers appeared on the uefa participants co-efficient list for 2017/18 last week, but today they are not on it.

maybe we are looking at the wrong list. or maybe they are off it for a reason.

  29. Poor Kenny McLean he’s been diagnosed with foot in mouth disease..

“Kenny McLean insists Aberdeen can end Celtic’s unbeaten domestic run – and derail their bid for a treble.

The Dons host the Premiership champions on Friday night before Scotland’s top two clubs meet again in the Scottish Cup final on 27 May.

“We want to show we can beat Celtic, because we know we’ve got the players that can,” McLean, 25, said.

“I think we are the best team to stop the unbeaten run – and stop the treble.”

    Get well soon Kenny:))

  30. Last nights game. All this Aberdeen had us under the cosh stuff does not really pan out.We had 53% possession,8 shots on target to Dons 3.How many saves did Craig have to make in the 2nd half?.I dont think one.

Nir Biton did a terrific job when he came on.

Just watched the game.Whirlwind start and then a comfortable defensive display.Although the number of second balls being picked up by the opposition needs to be addressed.

Obviously looking forward to Lisbon. This will be my second visit;the first being in 1966 on the old “school cruises”aboard the good ship Dunera.Any CQN’ers remember those trips? Yes. And we did visit the stadium that day!HH.
