Aberdeen dismantled

From Celtic’s starting lineup at Aberdeen last night, only Callum McGregor will expect to keep his place when the teams meet in the Scottish Cup Final in just over a week. That prospect should terrify Jimmy Thelin’s players, who were thoroughly dismantled in a 1-5 defeat.

Aberdeen’s most effective strategy was to clear the ball off the goal-line in desperation. A 7 minute interruption to play lulled Celtic into momentary complacency, which allowed Aberdeen to break down the left, for Kevin Nisbet to score with a fine header. That equalised Maik Nawrocki’s opening goal. The Pole delivered another flawless performance, adding to the wonder of why we have not seen more of him.

Three goals either side of the interval ended the game as a contest. Yang punched home a loose ball inside the six-yard box. McCowan was given Freedom of the Beach End to put his laces through a shot from 8 yards, but the goal of the game went to Johnny Kenny. The Irish striker scored his first goal for Celtic with a fine timed run and header.

Aberdeen lost discipline; Dorrington collected a second yellow card, Reo Hatate was brutally kicked and the score should have gone higher before Adam Idah knocked the ball over the line in added time.

Aberdeen have lots to consider before Hampden.

  1. Great to hear the fans finally sing a song for Jamesie.

He stood out last night amongst the squad players looking to impress, especially in the first half when only he and Nawrocki looked like they could walk into the first team.

Calmac was his usual steady self and helped make sure that the system and shape stayed consistent.

Second half was much improved and Kenny’s goal is hopefully the first of many more to come.

Hope Reo is back for the final.

Contrary to the views of others, last night’s match will have great significance in the Cup Final for the injury-absence of Reo Hatate.

That the challenge merited only a booking is a disgrace and shows up the lack of game knowledge by the referee.

The ref will know the rules, below , for a straight red under violent conduct and that tackle is certainly under it!

You may well be correct about the officials but for me I don’t think it was lack of knowledge but failure to apply the laws of the game and protect players health and wellbeing. Apart from the lunge on Hatate the assault twice on McCowan one to the head the other to his ankle and the no attempt to play the ball, waist hight lunge at Yang ( the player was eventually handed a second yellow) after only 60 seconds showed me that the Hun with the whistle and the Hun with the TV really could care less about applying the laws of the game or protecting players from thuggery, especially if those players are wearing green and white hoops.

  6. I wonder about string theory and multiverses from time to time. I struggle to understand the concepts but then I remember there’s a reason for my struggles- I’m not a physicist.

Ii know the talk about records is on the go,but,we are 47 goals ahead in the goal difference now.Has there ever been a gap like that between 1st ,and 2nd.?

    ——————–

for those who might want to know –

By scoring 111 goals Brendans team, equals the achievement of the 1966/67 side. Who scored 111, conceded 33, and had a goal difference of 78, but this was for 34 games, not 38.

There are only 4 other league seasons with more goals – Champions in al of them.

2022/23 – 114 for, 34 against – gd of 80.in aa 38 game season. I find it incredible that that record is not talked about and the targets were for Brendans team to match/beat the 106 of the invincibles and a gd of 81. How quickly our acheivements are forgotten about.

1937/38 – 114 for 42 against – gd of 72 in a 38 game season, McGrory had retired and Johnny Crum was now top scorer. The team that won the exhibition cup.

    1935/36 – 115 for 33 against, gd of 82, a 38 game season, with McGrory getting 50 league goals.

And now Maleys 2nd great Edwardian team going for another 3 in a row, which would become 4

1915/16 – 116 for 32 against, record goal difference of 84. Sniper McColl scoring 32,

so as it stands, with a current goal difference of 86, that would be a new record set.

47 goals between 1st and 2nd might be a record, but I suspect it isnt, and that might belong to Hearts, I am away to check

  8. bournesouprecipe on

Have you heard the one about the Pole, the Korean, the Scotsman, and the two Irishmen?

  9. “The Pole delivered another flawless performance, adding to the wonder of why we have not seen more of him.”…whit!

the pole confirmed he is not good enough,

  10. A league record that I think is largely forgotten. I mean how can you even score 132 goals in a 34 game season, 4 goals a game.

    ——————-

Hearts won that League title in 1957–58 with record-breaking points, goals scored and goal difference. Their record from 34 league games of 62 points out of a maximum possible 68 was 13 more than their nearest rival. They scored 132 goals (still the Scottish top tier record) with only 29 against for a record net difference of +103.

The original Rangers were 2nd in the league, with a gd of 40. So Hearts were better by 63 goals.

Celtic were third. Hearts beat the league cup winner by 2-0 at celtic park, and 5-3 at tynecastle.

  11. I think Maik has come a long way since he struggled at Aberdeen in Feb 2024. He was blamed for letting Bojan Miovski score and………………………………….

Maik Nawrocki was very lucky to avoid being sent off during Celtic’s draw with Aberdeen.

That was the consensus from the Sky pundits after watching the Hoops drop more points in the title race. A drab first half allowed Bojan Miovski to fire the Dons into the lead early in the second with a trademark predatory finish and Nicolas Kuhn’s first goal in the hoops was all the visitors could manage in reply.

Nawrocki had been booked in the first half for a barge on Killian Phillips and that led to outrage among the home ranks when the Polish centre-back clattered Miovski in the second half when the Hoops were trailing. It would’ve been a long way back for them if reduced to ten men.

    >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

But the again, what would the Celtic coaching staff know when compared to the manager in waiting, Paul67?

Great performance and good squad management, although I doubt it will have any real bearing on next week.

Cup finals are stand-alone games, usually fairly evenly contested and seldom won by more than two goals.

Even good teams rarely produce anywhere near their top level.

    RIP Jack McGinn

  14. I see that Glasgow Council are” ADVISING ” Celtic supporters NOT to gather at the Trongate/Merchant City area on Saturday in an official statement.

I see that for Celtic to beat Aberdeen in the Cup Final the odds for a 6-0 Victory ( CORRECT SCORE ) for the Hoops are 33/1 with BET365.

For the Hoops to win by the Correct Score of 7 – 1 v Aberdeen in the Cup Final the odds are 66/1 with BET365.

  16. Big Jimmy – this Saturday in Glasgow has the makings of an absolute shambles. Don’t know who is to blame for the situation arising but I know who they will be pointing fingers at if it all goes ‘pete tong’.

Many finngers in the pie – Council, Businesses, Police, Fans, Orange Order – a lethal cocktail in this city!!

  17. That route of the march a “celebration2 for VE day, even though there was already an event at knightswood last week.

Celtic supporters arriving in the morning on trains will meet the crowds following the march, shambolic and dangerous, timing is everything.

  18. IF the assault on REO HATATE last night leads to him being OUT of the Cup Final team….I wonder IF the rest of his Celtic team mates MAY be even MORE ” FIRED UP” to hammer Aberdeen in next weeks Cup Final ?

Punish them Celtic…MOLLYKATE the Dons Big time !

There may some Aberdeen fans who DO have tickets for the Cup Final, deciding NOT to attend the Cup Final after all due to Celtic giving them a SEVERE HAMMERING in the Final ?

    HH.

  19. I expect one of those public order notices to be issued late on Friday or Saturday giving the Police powers to do what they want, and, they will.

  20. There may be some Aberdeen fans who DO have tickets for the Cup Final, deciding NOT to attend the Cup Final after all, due to Celtic giving them a SEVERE HAMMERING last night and the POSSIBILITY of a SEVERE DOING in the Cup Final ?

    Be afraid Aberdeen…be very afraid..

Will be watching the Celtic on Saturday from the Victoria Bar. Asking all Celts to be really careful because those lowlife, bully canutes will be looking for easy victims.

  22. The lodge members from across Glasgow and Orange bands will assemble at Wishart Street, near Glasgow Cathedral before travelling down High Street, along George Street, Montrose Street, Cochrane Street, St Vincent Street and Renfield Street before crossing over the River Clyde.

They will then travel along Paisley Road, Paisley Road West, Harvie Street and Brand Street before ending in Lorne Street.

The outward parade is due to start at 9.45 am.

On the same day, Celtic fans are likely to congregate in the afternoon for an unofficial title party on Trongate after their game against St Mirren which kicks off at 12.30pm, meaning the two events are unlikely to overlap.

  23. so in that fake news, there are to be 2,500 estimated to take part in the actual parade. thousands more on the pavements,

the parade passes both railway stations.

there will be many thousands of our supporters arriving into central and queen street and the parades will be right outside,

and same in the afternoon when the banns return to their own wee routes, several of them in the east end,

duke street and dalmarnock will be lethal.

  24. fanadpatriot on

Well Well Well, the police have already made up their minds about who to blame if there is trouble in Glasgow on Saturday.
