Aberdeen dismantled

From Celtic’s starting lineup at Aberdeen last night, only Callum McGregor will expect to keep his place when the teams meet in the Scottish Cup Final in just over a week. That prospect should terrify Jimmy Thelin’s players, who were thoroughly dismantled in a 1-5 defeat.

Aberdeen’s most effective strategy was to clear the ball off the goal-line in desperation. A 7 minute interruption to play lulled Celtic into momentary complacency, which allowed Aberdeen to break down the left, for Kevin Nisbet to score with a fine header. That equalised Maik Nawrocki’s opening goal. The Pole delivered another flawless performance, adding to the wonder of why we have not seen more of him.

Three goals either side of the interval ended the game as a contest. Yang punched home a loose ball inside the six-yard box. McCowan was given Freedom of the Beach End to put his laces through a shot from 8 yards, but the goal of the game went to Johnny Kenny. The Irish striker scored his first goal for Celtic with a fine timed run and header.

Aberdeen lost discipline; Dorrington collected a second yellow card, Reo Hatate was brutally kicked and the score should have gone higher before Adam Idah knocked the ball over the line in added time.

Aberdeen have lots to consider before Hampden.

  1. I wonder what will constitute a gathering ,will it be specified groups or thousands casually walking back into Glasgow after the game and League title presentation along the gallowgate?

1985 they called it The Janefield Riot.

4000 plus Celtic fans exit via Janefield St. Crowded. (in the past many more had exited this way without problems)

At some point a mounted police decides there is a ruck developing between opposing fans (denied by all subsequent statements by those involved). He orders 5 mounted police horses to charge through the crowd.

‘Balaclava’ style charge through absolute mobbed street. Mayhem results.

They turn at the top of the street and charge back down again.

People already panic-ed start in on police and second charge is met by coins and stones

Police, not content and they call for backup – more mounties and plods arrive. 2 further charges follow. Open battle breaks out with police. Police start snatching people when full marias arrive. Numerous examples of excessive force in arrest. Many innocent bystanders nabbed.

100 yard of brick wall topped with steel railings collapses; people being let in and thru houses to get away from police, people handing kids up onto verandas to get them out the way

9 police injured including the original 5 mounties, 1 police with broken nose requiring hospital

39 fans injured, 10 requiring hospital treatment

69 arrests made (41 for breach of the peace – all the police figures confusing as it also includes arrests made inside the ground and pre-game also, 19 for carrying drink, 9 for minor offences.)

Strathclyde Police Chief Constable Sir Patrick Hamill launches immediate full police enquiry.

Kevin Kelly, Celtic Director, makes immediate call thru Celtic View for eye witness statements from those involved and gets statements from Janefield Street residents. Next 2 Celtic Views publish 4 pages of statements all stating that there was a peaceful but crowded exit before the police decided to charge.

Results of Police Inquiry published December 1985 exonerate police – no action to be taken.

Dennis Canavan raises question in House of Commons. Now alleged that 21 police injured and 12 “civilians”. Solicitor General for Scotland dismisses Canavan’s charges and 62 yet to appear at courts

Celtic set up Police Liason Committee in January to meet regularly and later appoint Security Officer (ex-Strathclyde Police inspector)

Not long ago,the hun hordes got a police escort in to George Square and wrecked it again, which was during Lockdown…….we are being set up for a fall, and a free hit for the huns

Bada, totally agree. I’ve been saying to all my mates for the past week or so that we were being set up. The statements from GCC and the Police are in no way subtle – the Orange/VE (sic) parades are LEGAL (get it up ye Timmy), any congregation in Trongate/Merchant City has been deemed ‘ILLEGAL’ (clear interpretation of the warning statements re. gatherings, so GET IT UP YE TIMMY!!

The statement from plod regarding ‘proportionate plans in place to deal with said gatherings’ is an open challenge as well as a warning to Celtic fans. Remember what happened to Celtic fans at the last Glasgow derby?

    We are being set up!

  7. Should have added at the end, above – they are getting really sick and totally pissed off with US winning so much, so often and THEMS winning the square root of feck all. The only thing they can do, therefore, is try to take the gloss off our achievements by ‘promoting’ societal disorder and blame it on us.

We’re being set up – pray to God I am wrong.

“We want supporters of every team in Glasgow to be able to celebrate their successes but ask fans – including those visiting the city – to please avoid disruptive mass gatherings at Merchant City/Trongate and other public places”

Above statement from GCC that is causing concern.

My gut instinct? This silly statement is not deliberately malevolent but, rather, just an incompetent organisation covering its ass by being seen to do something beforehand.

To be fair, Councils have an extremely broad range of responsibilities.

Poor organisational design at work for sure so it is often the case the left hand doesn’t know what the right hand is doing.

Not likely, but possible, the group who ticked the box on this OO march did by rote without realising we had a game that day.

Always advisable to read formal public utterances carefully.

The last four words are illuminating in the extreme.

Do you mean like a Fan Zone? If only Celtic had submitted plans to have one with Glasgow CC then this could all have been resolved, oh wait….
