Aberdeen fans, grasping financial fundamentals

627

It would be remiss of me not to acknowledge Aberdeen fans’ banner on Saturday in response to their chairman, Stewart Milne’s suggestion that fans are damaging our game with talking about the consequences of clubs being found to be cheating.
capture-20151221-130408

I know some people learned the lessons of 2012 but others appear to have acquired amnesia. Back in 2012 only one SPL club was of the view that Rangers should not be allowed to phoenix and gain entry to top flight football. After a considerable campaign by fans, all others, apart from Rangers themselves, and Kilmarnock, decided it would be better if existing rules were allowed to stand on the matter.

Milne was off his head making his comments. The only way to possibly pull a stroke like this would be to keep quiet about it, even then I doubt it would be achievable. Making his feelings known was only going to engage Aberdeen supporters, who will have the ultimate view on what the club do.

The issue remains in the long grass until the Supreme Court have concluded their business, but what we said in October remains valid: if Celtic stand alone, the matter will not be looked at again, if other clubs are on-board, it will be examined appropriately. It is for fans of Aberdeen, United, Hibs, Hearts, Motherwell and make their feelings known.

The Herald’s piece this morning on Newco being “handed a place in the Premiership next summer as a result of some hastily-arranged league reconstruction” was remarkable. It was absurd but also worthy of respect. “NOBODY at Rangers (sic.)” wants this, but as other clubs need for Newco’s promotion is so great, apparently this is not really implausible.

Promote them, not because they are in need, because other clubs need them.

The starting position on league reconstruction is notable. For years only Celtic and Rangers blocked the SPL from being expanded. The majority of top flight clubs live in fear of (and experienced) relegation. They want a less competitive middle to the league. When the SPFL was formed a temporary moratorium of league reconstruction was agreed. This moratorium is due to expire shortly, a window for change is about to open up.

Tracking underneath all of these debates are the financial fundamentals. Newco is not financially viable. They are not viable in the Championship and although Premiership football would give them a few millions more, it would not change the fundamentals.

The circa £17m it takes to run a club at Ibrox before you employ football staff leaves little money for football given their anticipated top-flight income. It would take years and many tens of millions of dead investment to change this, as well as Mike Ashley raising the white flag.

These facts have not been grasped yet as the consequences of the hoped for investment of tens of millions not appearing are not being considered. Dave King might invest £30m-£50m, so with a fair wind everything might be OK. On the other hand, I think even £50m is tight, and I don’t see anything like that money heading to Ibrox.

The consequences of what happened in 2012, even on these pages, have yet to be realised. The old business model is finished, it’s not coming back.

Many thanks to everyone who contributed to the Foundation Christmas Appeal bucket collection on Saturday. You see people at their very best on these occasions. If you want to know how your money will be spent have a read here.

Very last shout from CQN Bookstore for Christmas delivery, if you’re after 16:00, it’ll be after the festives’ before you get your book or DVD.

  1. Weefrathetim – welcome back!

HT (or anyone) – seems a bit unusual that they’re only selling north or south stand tickets for the semi? And at £20 a pop. And not online either? Or have I got all or any othis wrong?

Oh and good evening the rest of you ;-)

£260!!!!! I’ll be selling a kidney at this rate…..or hunners of roles of Celtic wallpaper borders :-)

  3. Jobo

They’re selling south and north first before the traditional east (Celtic end). Not sure about the online issue but I need to go back in tomorrow so I’ll ask for you.

I have to commend you for your faith, patience and hard work. You have clearly put in a mountain of effort, and you come on here every day, listen to alot of crap (including mine) and answer questions with good grace.

I might not always agree with you, but I know that you do what you do out of love for the club, and you do it with a fair amount of class.

Whatever happens, you have my utmost respect, sir.

    Hail hail

  5. P67………

You’ve explained the predicament our club finds itself in………Thank-you.

The issue with the Huns and their cheating requires a Scottish-wide solution

to this most scoddish of problems.

I’m sure some of those brazenly advocating unilateral Celtic action on this are

fully aware how horribly exposed and easily marginalised this would leave the club.

When the huns return they will be a force no matter how pish they actually are.

The mibs aided and abetted with their hampden brethren and msm will see to that.

Their is a deep cancer at the heart of Scottish society and the refs and administrators come from that pool.

Unless there is a fair and performance based system for referees the huns will benefit on match day .

If the predictable based on history is allowed to happen the game is finished in Scotland.

Saturday was a glaring example-huns concede an non penalty and press fume.Falkirk concede a non penalty and press shrug shoulders.

Madden in our game reffereed both teams to different standards as has been the case often this season.

I do not ve much hope for the future of the Scottish game.ha

  10. Paul67,

Good to see Etims call out Ronny as a failure. I suspect John or Sellic who runs the Huddlebord will be next. These guys don’t do the Celtic a la carte of succulent lamb with a touch of emerald mint.

When can we expect CQN to analyse the Celtic shambles without fear of favour cc Dr John Reid Celtic Chairman

  11. The SFA and SPFL know that the current ‘Rangers’ are not the same club with history as the club that once played at Ibrox, but they wil not say so, hoping for time to pass and we will forget, aided by the Scottish press

  13. Celtic voted against DK as FPP. Celtic voted against Newco Rangers into SPL. Celtic rarely have any support at SPFL and SPL before and only ICT generally votes with Celtic. Sometimes Kilmarnock on Financial issues.

Waghorn ? Tavenneer ? Do you think these journey men could threaten our SPL grip, listen to Radio Level 5, it will get worse when we get to seven then eight…….

Gudetti, Scepovic, Tonev, Wakasso, Gordon, that’s five for a kick off that RD had nothing to do with FACT.

And to say otherwise is deluding yourself.

I think that there is a fair chance that you are correct.

However, what do you base your facts on. The word of someone’s uncle’s auntie who knows somebody else’s second cousin?

  18. If the team from Ibrox is promoted then Celtic should publicly wecome them as a brand new club with little history.

  19. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

No idea why CFC fans continue to measure our club against Sevco …..

More introspection we’re in a mess …we need go concentrate on our own deficiencies

  20. What I know is that the Football Division is rum by the First Team Manager, Ronny. John Park runs the scouting and brings players in positions that the manager had identified. The Manager then decides who is he wants. 1st, 2nd and 3rd Choice. He has a budget and he decides how he spends it e.g one £5m player or 5 £1million player

Only when the football dept has done their work, then the commercial piece is done by the club and ultimately the CEO. They negotiate the contact and Transfer Fee for players in and out.

Peter Lawwell is not qualified to handle the Football part, that is the Manager who has the final say. Peter Lawwell does the financial negotiations which he is qualified to do.

John Parks team scout the players and then the Football coaching staff decide who to sign within their budget, its only the Financial gets left with the Commercial people.

Budgets are made each year and are subject of change at the control of the manager who can ask for money brought forward from the next window for example. European income, Champs league and Europa League qualification have an effect on Budget. The more coming in means the more for the Manager for signings and contracts.

Now selling Players is also involving commercials as well as football side and indeed we may have to bring in additional finance to cover decreasing income from whatever source

If we don’t qualify for Champs League, don’t sell enough tickets or Hospitality. If the shops sell less thats when our Turnover drops and we need to sell.

People who say the Board buy the players don’t understand the way the club is run.

To be able to state so many facts you must be fairly high up in the Celtic organisation.

  22. The Exiled Tim 7.24pm,

In addition to the 5 players signed that the manager is not responsible for there are others …where John Park and John Collins are in cahoots……the auld reekie connection.

Of course the manager is not responsible for appointing Ronny….nope someone else can take a bow for that one too.

Of course when the time comes to kick him into touch like Mowbray the responsible will be take his distance and feed him to the wolves of the SMSM. The SMSM have their purpose and once Ronny is delivered to them will feed on him like a pack of piranhas.

  23. Pfayr…

There is no point kidding ourselves on, a hun team will be challenging us in some form and through time will sit at the top the way we are going.

I’m with you on our boards lack of investment, multiple cheap options whom mainly warm a bench if they’re on it.

Diehard Celtic supporters are p****d off wih it and are showing their contempt by not going to games.

A clean out is needed, how do we get rid of the dross though?

Whether the points you make in your post are accurate or not, I think the post itself is a good example of the kind of post I like to read on CQN. It makes a change from the rather ill informed but expressed as infallible posts that all too often fill the pages of CQN. People keep telling me it is all about opinions but most comments are styled as unarguable facts rather then guessed opinion.

    Cheerio for now,

  25. QUONNO

They were scouted before Ronny got the job, so I am at a loss how he could have had anything to do with signing them.

A couple of them were signed before he was appointed.

I have said many many times that I think we are doing the right thing re players in, but I think it needs tweaked,

we need a spine of old heads in the team, players with no sell on value, players who can impart their knowledge to the weans round about them, players who are a positive influence on the pitch, we have none presently, when Broonie is not in the team we are bereft of any kind of leadership.

    HH

  26. My opinon is board dont buy players but PL with JP’s input does

I can imagine PL would be very persuasive in getting RD to take a player. Now I think RD can suggest but ultimately….

PL controls the budget on behalf of….the board
