Aberdeen, getting a grip, Doncaster

251

I know I’m not the only one who was keen on a league challenge this season, preferably from Aberdeen, not the effervescent Hamilton Accies, who made some early running.  Aberdeen, of all other Scottish clubs, have the potential to push Celtic further.

That all came tumbling down during the steak pie yesterday, as I watched scores on my phone.  A challenge is OK, but the temerity to go top of the league in January is something else.

Celtic had largely sorted their early season performance problems but an undeserved defeat at Dundee United and a wholly deserved point for Ross County opened the door to Aberdeen, who have threatened to get their act together for 18 months and finally appear to be delivering.  The frustrating thing for Ronny Deila and his squad, is that Aberdeen will fancy their chances in all of their upcoming games, while it’s another 8 weeks before Celtic will have an opportunity to take points off them.

Some of us pondered that we need competition to sharpen wits and muscles.  It’s welcome, although I may reconsider if we’re not back on top after the Aberdeen game on 28th Feb.

Anyone fretting about the prospects of Four-in-a-Row is respectfully invited to get a grip of themselves.

Neil Doncaster, what a wit*.  He sat in the meeting which rejected newco Rangers’ (then Sevco Scotland’s) application to join the SPL in place of oldco Rangers, who were then on their way to liquidation.

Doncaster met Craig Whyte along with SPL chairman Ralph Topping, in London in October 2011 when Whyte laid his cards on the table – and co-opted Doncaster into selling his doomsday scenario:

‘We’re going down the lavvy, the world will end, but you two can sort it all out, let me flush the detritus and nip into the SPL as though nothing had happened.’

He even suggested the whole episode would be over and done with within three months.  Doncaster was caught in the headlights, dreading having to lose a club midseason, and no doubt had genuine doomsday fears, he folded in the face of that cunning operator, Craig Whyte, and tried to sell Whyte’s plan to SPL clubs.  He failed, after considerable fan pressure.

Yesterday’s interview contained nothing he didn’t say two years ago, but it’s timing raises questions over what exactly he’s doing for his salary, that an inexperienced gardener couldn’t do.

For the record: Rangers appointed a liquidator and changed their name.  Sevco Scotland applied for and received conditional membership to the SFA and Scottish Football League.  They received permission from Rangers administrators to use the name ‘Rangers’.  The newco played its first game against Brechin City….. then oldco Rangers had their SFA membership rescinded.  Oldco and Newco existed as two separate members of the SFA at the same time.

Not since the Big Man explained transubstantiation has anyone tried to sell the same story.  Until Whyte and Doncaster.  Explain the simultaneous memberships – and we might take you seriously, otherwise, leave that patter for off-mic. comments to eager Bears.

  8. We have been downsizing since Seville. That season we lost a fortune. In the real world its called, surviving, staying solvent, not downsizing.

The problems with the dead clubs offspring is they failed to “Downsize”to suit the financial setup they were in.Outcome, insolvent, and surviving on secured loans.

I hate the fact that we are where we are,as do most. But sadly, that is facts. Its a vicious circle, one that we cannot exit in this financial climate. We are solvent, but not rich.

Many fans forget the purchase of land, the upgrades, present and planned around Celtic Park.

Its not always easy. The appointment of RD has already met with criticism. The fact he is a 21st Century, forward thinking manager, with a proven track record of bring home grown talent through, has been lost in the “Success now”clamor. Also the fact that it may take a couple of seasons to see the fruits of his work with Academy players. One thing is for sure,we can never go back to the old ways.Clubs like Basel are the way forward, and it did not come overnight. Now they are reaping the rewards.

I do not think we will see the signing of any duds under RD.If they do not fit his system,or thinking, they will not be signed.Think about it.What would be the point. The scattergun approach I think will be a thing of the past.

Of course its only my opinion, and I know many wont agree. Its a blog after all.

  16. 67Heaven,

we all know they died and Murray was the reason for that ( in more ways than you can imagine ). So nobody is asking for Celtic to do the same.

Try thinking objectively about Celtic. We have £30M CL money up for grabs next season. Over next 3 seasons £90M just for qualifying. So any team that can qualify and has a 60k stadium and wins zero points is guaranteed £100M.

Now imagine if you have to win this £100M prize and there is no real competition this season but next season could be more challenging with the possibility of a new kid on the block wanting some of the prize.

Imagine that how you act in this transfer window will determine how successful you are in the first dip at the pot of gold. Also success here will make it more likely that you succeed to obtain the rest of the pot of gold.

Imagine a Strategic CEO investing to win the £100M pot of gold in a wise sensible manner. Or imagine a cost cutting CEO operating a budget year to year. Imagine a CEO working strategically to succeed in CL qualification and his bonus and LTI plan based on this. At the same time his bonus/LTI are based in Cash / EBIT targets…just like any other CEO.

Try to think objectively why Celtic are downsizing and put at risk a £100M prize that would finish the new kid on the block before he started.

now the current CEO track record at last 2 CL qualifiers is lucky and failed. In each case the die was cast in the January transfer window ( just like the willo flood window).

Lawwell will achieve £1m/year with or without CL football and the the £100M pot of gold. There is something inherently wrong with that. As such, the club, players, fans all suffer. Lawwell has a contract that is watertight so he ain’t go to volunteer to do the right thing.

Something has to give because in 3 years time under current leadership and actions Celtic will be at a much lower ebb than today.

Imagine for one minute if they could succeed in winning the £100M prize. If you haven’t done so before…don’t worry you are in good company with Mr Lawwell.

The story is still unfolding regarding Celtic’s stance but unfortunately at a slower pace than CP is emptying, I maintain their ‘cheating’ goes cap in hand with Celtic’s downsizing as to why it’s gotten emptier.

I don’t believe Celtic are as culpable as some, and I definitely don’t think they see a visage of old firm mark two, being the saviour and necessary up turn in business. Only my gut supporter reaction because the thought of playing them, certainly turns my stomach.

I think if Celtic were complicit it was a decision taken before LNS and Celtic like everyone else in world sport were shammed by his decision. If Celtic took part in ‘a five way agreement,’ it was because they thought LNS would, do what should have been done in terms of appropriate sanction including title stripping.

If that had happened even more Celtic supporters would thole a return of their offspring, than at present where astonishingly some already do.

We are about to find out in the coming two or three months whether ‘downsizing’ , has been so severe as to allow a provincial club as well as Euro clubs to overtake us. The buy cheap and sell on, policy can only last so long, because it’s unsustainable and has undoubtedly contributed to rows of empty green seats, and the subsequent business downturn.

I’ve said it before but I’ll say it again, I pray Celtic will make their stance and perception of the new club, known when the time comes, if it’s not clear and unequivocal on what happened in 2012, the club will have certainly failed the support, not mention world wide sporting integrity, much more so than on any unpopular Celtic business policy of selling our Wanyama’s.
