Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic sign wingers with different targets

263

Within around a week of each other, Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic are all likely to sign wide midfield players, although with different profiles. Niall McGinn re-joins Aberdeen on a contract which will expire in 2021, a few weeks short of his 34th birthday. Celtic are set to announce the capture of St Mirren’s Lewis Morgan (21) imminently, while Newco have confounded all by paying money (or at least promising to) for former Motherwell winger, Jamie Murphy (28).

Murphy was irrepressible at Motherwell and it’s no surprise the Newco coaches were interested in him. Media photographs of him this morning suggest he’s a tad out of shape, but if he can recapture his Motherwell form he will be a solid SPFL player.

When Niall McGinn went to Korea in the summer it appeared to signal the end of an Aberdeen team which comfortably established itself as the second best in Scotland – recording a Best of the Rest treble last season. Considering the departures from Pittodrie, and manager Derek McInnes’ dalliances with other clubs, it is surprising Aberdeen have managed to hold onto second spot.

They will need McGinn back at his productive best if they are to finish the season in second against Newco (caveat: if the latter remains solvent).

Celtic’s opportunity is all about transforming Lewis Morgan into the next Stuart Armstrong. As well as being the preferred destination for aspiring talent, we have the luxury of being able to plan long-term. Right now, Lewis is the most exciting prospect of all three. He will join Celtic because he wants to become a Champions League player, not fight for second place.

That will take work on the part of the player, but they know what they are doing at Lennoxtown.

Everybody these days wants a goalie who is a shot-stopper but also a sweeper.

Ronnie Simpson was 50 years ahead of his time and was brilliant at both.

Fearless in the box, but his footwork and distribution of the ball – sublime.

And that backheel in the Estadio Nacional… that was better than a third goal.

great catch by aberdeen getting mgcinn for a couple of years – he’s a decent spfl player that’ll give them consistency to dominate poor teams

From earlier we were blogging about long grass and stuff, heads rolling, you will be aware that the career development of Regan continues as he is now on a Champions League Committee for Marketing of that particular competition, doing well is the bold Regan despite his actions withing Scottish Football, I’m sure this appointment involved competitive interviewing.

  8. No news on the signing of Murphy by the huns,

could Brighton possibly want some money upfront

    FRITZSONG

I remember it as if it was yesterday? what day was yesterday? Our scorers were Lennox, Turner (remember Paddy) Divers and Frank Brogan, unfortunately my bible does not give times for the goals. Maybe some of the “Old Bhoys” can keep us right.

*Correct but this should not be confused with the 4-4 cup game 14 months earlier which I recently mentioned and you are correct about the goal scorers.

We had already lost 3 games in 5 weeks including one the week before tae deidco, and you’re correct again we were 4 up in less than quarter of an hour including one of only 2 goals in 14 games fae Paddy Turner who actually was a prolific scorers with every other team he played for, he would be gone by the end of the season, however Thirds pulled back 3 goals prior to half time and equalised 5 minutes intae the 2nd half. Amazingly after such a bright start we were the team holding out at the end.

This was typical of the Celtic side at that time as on the following Tuesday with the Bear replacing the injured Paddy scoring a hat trick, which was one more than Paddy would score n his short Celtic career, in a 5-1 victory over in Basle. We would then return to lose at Brockville followed up with another loss at Love Street, Paddy back in the side at the expense of big Yogi, and a draw with the Pars at home before gubbin Basle again at Parkheid in front of a poor crowd, it was not just the away score that kept it down but also the hellish weather of gales and storms which ravaged the country. Another plus that horrible night was deidco getting gubbed 6-0 in the Bernabeau. It truly was a chore supporting the bhoys back then but as the Bunnet said always worth it.

The Hi Hi were a really good side back then although wee (5’5”) Jocky Robertson was gone by this time as were Hilley, Harley and Gray to Newcastle and the latter two Man City. They did have a cracking young full back called Junior McGillivray a rising star who had already been capped by Scotland U 23 and starred against a young England side, he was involved in a bizarre transfer to deidco, he never played a first team game for them and was quickly unloaded to Bradford Park Avenue who ironically played in the hoops and had Tom Maley as manager during their most successful period, it seems he was fodder in a move for the huns tae get rid of big doug baillie he of the “who made you John, doug baillie father”, fame.

At the time I was gutted that they had signed such a highly rated full back whose career they ultimately ruined, typical for that mob. They did the same with a promising young St Mirren left half, both us and Sheffield Wednesday had equal bids for him and then they stepped in, at that time they had the hill o’ beath bevvy merchant in that role who they signed when they had another promising youngster in that role who would eventually move tae Anfield for more money than they paid for baxter. He was an absolute star for the Shanks side, in the top 50 of their greatest players, and played against us in that infamous ECWC tie at Liverpool where the Brussels sprout ref bottled it.

For those out there that are concerned we are hovering up the best talent tae sit in the stands or reserves, not so as that’s not the Celtic way, we show more loyalty (pun intended) than that mob ever did.

As for Paddy Turner, my da always stated that we had signed the wrong goal scorer from Morton and should have went for mcgraw, but it seems that there was no way the wine alley product would ever don the hoops, the green and white of the Hibbees was ok but not our colours, he eventually ended up at belfast’s windsor park.

*I remember big Frank doing something similar in the replay against the Pars, my da called him an eejit, it was a term he often used when Frank’s name was mentioned. If my memory serves me well the support called him Crazy Horse, he was very impressionable and when you’re a young schoolboy that seems important, I loved him back then.

  14. I see that this week’s Friday Night Football offering is on BBC1 and it’s the ole Liverpool Derby. Can’t remember the last time I watched a full English game live but will make an exception tonight. I know that many of the ‘big’ teams in England have rather devalued the importance of the FA Cup in recent years, certainly in the earlier rounds. But given the 2 teams involved I’m sure they’ll be more or less at full strength? Liverpool’s odds are almost identical to ours last Saturday lunchtime. I imagine the general consensus will be similar too – they should win comfortably so long as they are up for it. So probably has nil-nil written all over it!

    Oh and good evening, friends!

  15. okay quiz question later, lets get nostalgic, anyone remember at primary school 12 o clock the teacher would light a candle and say the angelus before we went for lunch, also the small glass bottle of milk you got think it was a third of a pint, then later replaced by a carton, also in our school our lady and st josephs they sold biscuits to go with your milk not for profit think the proceeds went to the black babies remember them you used to pay some money and adopt a black baby you used to get a small card with a photograph, yes remember the biscuits were mcvities royal scot dont think they make them anymore sadly.hh

  21. Big Packy: The Angelus.

You are a little older than I am but we too said the Angelus at midday. And we got milk and sandwiches every lunch time.

A few years ago a priest was appointed chaplain to our school. He had spent the previous thirty years in Australia.

One day, at midday, he was teaching a class and was surprised that nobody anticipated standing up to say the Angelus. He asked them to stand up and to say it but one student asked “what is the Angelus?”

The Priest asked ” Who knows the Angelus?” But no-one responded.

Frustrated, the priest said “surely someone can say the Angelus?”.

After a long pause one student finally said “Father, I know”.

The priest was delighted and invited the student to stand up and lead the class in the midday prayer.

The student, a little embarrassed, stood up and said “bong…. bong….bong”.
