Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic sign wingers with different targets

263

Within around a week of each other, Aberdeen, Newco and Celtic are all likely to sign wide midfield players, although with different profiles. Niall McGinn re-joins Aberdeen on a contract which will expire in 2021, a few weeks short of his 34th birthday. Celtic are set to announce the capture of St Mirren’s Lewis Morgan (21) imminently, while Newco have confounded all by paying money (or at least promising to) for former Motherwell winger, Jamie Murphy (28).

Murphy was irrepressible at Motherwell and it’s no surprise the Newco coaches were interested in him. Media photographs of him this morning suggest he’s a tad out of shape, but if he can recapture his Motherwell form he will be a solid SPFL player.

When Niall McGinn went to Korea in the summer it appeared to signal the end of an Aberdeen team which comfortably established itself as the second best in Scotland – recording a Best of the Rest treble last season. Considering the departures from Pittodrie, and manager Derek McInnes’ dalliances with other clubs, it is surprising Aberdeen have managed to hold onto second spot.

They will need McGinn back at his productive best if they are to finish the season in second against Newco (caveat: if the latter remains solvent).

Celtic’s opportunity is all about transforming Lewis Morgan into the next Stuart Armstrong. As well as being the preferred destination for aspiring talent, we have the luxury of being able to plan long-term. Right now, Lewis is the most exciting prospect of all three. He will join Celtic because he wants to become a Champions League player, not fight for second place.

That will take work on the part of the player, but they know what they are doing at Lennoxtown.

Lewis Oh Lewis Morgan Oh Lewis Morgan on the wing…

Okay enuff of the aul tartan army ditties, though probably hear it revised at Hampden some day.

Good bit of business for Celtic and the bhoy. Really hope Brendan’s strategy of building a core of the Team around Scots (& Irish) comes to fruition. It’s great to see the likes of Dembele Grace the hoops but we’ll always be a stepping stone for those guys.

Welcome to Celtic Lewis, a Champion move…

Things not going so smoothly with Jamie Murphy to Ibrox, looked like a done deal…

SunSport can reveal the Seagulls will get £1m up front for the ex-Motherwell man with the same again in add-ons.

    What could be the problem!?

    Hail Hail

  2. I can’t work out why the huns expose themselves to public ridicule for the sake of 2 days’ headlines that they are signing an EPL player. Surely even the Gullibillies must see through their bluster. All the spivs and con artists must be queuing up to sell them stuff. Maybe King has a sideline selling their season book register; it must be worth a fortune.

    Hell mend them.

  3. MAH,

Best of luck with your treatment next week.

Welcome to Celtic Lewis Morgan, and here’s looking forward to a great second half of the season. As has been said, it is not always easy being a Celtic supporter, but it is always worthwhile.

  5. Welcome Lewis to the family. Remember the greatest winger I have ever seen was a wee Mhan. We have been trying to find someone to match his talent and fearlessness since he moved on from Celtic Park. If you are half as good as the wee Mhan, you will do for me. HH.

What a lovely thing to say. I really don’t know what I’ve done to deserve your kind words so I thank you still more for your kindness.

“Maybe King has a sideline selling their season book register; it must be worth a fortune…”

    You may be onto something…

I remember when high pressure sales techniques came into Britain in the 70’s. Often in the guise of a double glazing salesman.

When they were trained they were told, when visiting a potential client, to go through the “marks” record collection. If it had Max Bygraves records… never leave without a sale…:)

  10. I watched the interview with Lewis Morgan and was struck by how confident, polite and articulate the young man is.

He came across very well without being cocky and also showed respect for all current and former clubs and colleagues.

I believe he can also play a bit.

    Welcome Lewis!

Cloghercelt there is a new refurbished room in National Concert Hall in Earlsfort Terrace named after Kevin Barry as he was a medical student there.

*on my trip to Dublin in the summer we took the bus to our hotel close by the airport, we passed a white building with a tricolour hanging outside, no big deal its Dublin, what caught my eye was the name Kevin Barry on it. Further investigation revealed it was the Sinn Fein headwaters on Parnell Square.

  17. Falkirk v Dundee United for me today. Third Championship game in a fortnight, first two enjoyable games hopefully this is as well.

Hello again all you young rebels.

Jimmy Jimmy jimmy Johnston on the wing on the wing was the ditty

the tartan army only ever abused wee Jinky much to their shame.

Well, great day down at our soccer club, the Celtic Academy people

came to sus out the amenities and were blown away, our Celtic

bhoys were already out on the parks hoping to make a early impression

and in 42 degs heat, got to give them credit for trying to catch the eye,

told them Celtic had just signed a 17 year old from Tom Rogic’s old club

so at 14 they always have a chance, so trying to get them to stop and

have a drink of water, well, i was better staying in the bar :-))

Welcome to Celtic Lewis Morgan, thought initially another prospect, but

i’ve got a good feeling about this bhoy not just for his football ability but

he’s obviously got a brain in his head, why else would an ex rager mascot

join the top team in the country :-))

Big Packy Alex Young was it?

*got tae know his boyhood friend over here, a wee Celtic supporter, just loved Alex, said he had nae pretensions and when he retired returned tae the mining village he came fae working in the family upholstery business.

BTW the wee mhan I knew was also on the jambos books and had a soft spot for them but supported us as his da originally came fae the Good and the Bad.

  20. BAMBOO on 5TH JANUARY 2018 11:07 PM

Correct Big Packy His fellow Scots in the Bill Shankly championship side were Ian St John , Ron Yeats , the goal-keeper Tommy Lawrence.

*I mentioned him, although not by name as I assumed most would know who he was, when discussing huns signing players they didnae really need so they couldnae go tae anybody else.

He was the one who was discarded for baxter and big dandy mclean’s career was never completely fulfilled as they tried tae turn him intae a striker, ironically he was a left half tae, he was also alongside jim forrest made scapegoat for Berwick.

  21. MARRAKESH EXPRESS on 5TH JANUARY 2018 11:12 PM

I have clearer memories of the 9-0 Airdrie game a couple of months later when Haffey missed the penalty for ten

*I knew the Airdrie goalie, he now lives in Oz close tae where big Frank lives, he’s also pally with Wispy.

I didnae know him at the time and had no idea he came fae Dumbarton. He played juvenile with my brother, one of his sister’s was pally with Mrs TT growing up and his wife was my neighbour, we would travel up and down tae school together.

Genuinely nice big guy and his uncle was the legendary Firhill Express, didnae know that at the time either.

Big P My favorite Toffee was John Connolly. Hh

*not to be confused with the excelled Burnley and Manure winger who was in the ’66 WC squad.

Also don’t be confused with the Scottish version’s surname as I believe he leaned towards deidco and not us.
