Aberdeen urge SPFL to wait, it will make no difference

243

I’m delighted Aberdeen got on-board with the suggestion the SPFL refrain from making a quick decision to curtail the Premiership season.  In a letter to the other 11 SPFL teams, the League and SFA, they want to explore every way possible to complete the remaining league and Scottish Cup fixtures, while keeping a full 2020-21 fixture programme.

There is no reason for the SPFL, or our governments, to act quickly to cancel the season, and every reason to monitor what happens in countries where plans to relax lockdown have been prepared.

Chairman Dave Cormack outlined objectives and concerns, including the health of players and their ability to perform during a heavy fixture burden without affecting the outcome of games.  His optimism is commendable, but almost certainly misplaced.

Players are in a demographic considered among the safest from the worst consequences of virus, but playing football games will spread Covid among squads.  Fixtures cannot be fulfilled if your squad is ill with Covid, or isolating because they have been exposed to the virus.  Recuperation time from an illness with such consequences is also likely to be substantial for an athlete (this remains uncertain as no athlete has yet recuperated and returned to competition).

I would love to see the season end competitively.  We will not be able to attend games, but we would be able to watch Celtic win the title on the field, see Hearts relegated the way nature intended and watch Newco play their home games in Paisley.

Instead of cramming lots of games into the available time, I suspect the first year football returns will see lots of fixture cancellations and competition overruns.  We have yet to get our heads around where the world is right now, but there’s no reason Aberdeen cannot look into possibilities.  Wait until June, realise what you should have known for months and call it then.

  1. Ernie and Canman. As we were ramping up my wife and oldest daughter were/are on the front line in ED. They were much quieter than normal and still are. Lockdown reduces serious injury but there is now a real concern that people who should go to hospital are avoiding it. Big push on TV to tell people who need help for other medical issues to get to their doctors. Lots of unanticipated consequences thus time but then again it’s our first real pandemic since 1918.

    Ernie..,

I get the point about lock-down affecting the number of A&E visits, I’m just no getting how that would explain the reduction in chronic asthma attacks, especially in children, are you hinting at parents deciding the seriousness of their childrens affliction has been exaggerated and they can after all survive without medical assistance?

Another point is if as the medics suggest the seriousness of the conditions regularly treated is not exaggerated then if air quality is not the reason for the reduction we should expect to see a spike in child deaths due to asphyxiation, no?

Obviously, excluding the ones with the bruises around their necks who have been naughty.

    I don’t know.

    It merits proper investigation.

It could be a combination of factors, perhaps some physical some psychological.

Maybe it’s not having to attend school, or maybe getting more sleep, or having more contact with their parents making them less anxious etc etc.

Canadian bread flour is “strong” and excellent for baking your own bread.

  11. OldTim67,

The wife sent me this from her work this morning. I hope it helps and reassures you.

These are the current guidelines during the COVID-19 pandemic.:

BSH guidance on B12 supplements during COVID pandemic

    Reference: https://cks.nice.org.uk/anaemia-b12-and-folate-deficiency#!scenario

The maintenance B12 dose depends on whether the deficiency is diet related or not.

For people with B12 deficiency that is:

B12 deficiency not thought to be diet related

Eg: Pernicious anaemia, h/o total/partial gastrectomy or achlorhydria, inflammatory bowel diseases,

NICE 2019 Recommends: Administer hydroxocobalamin 1 mg intramuscularly every 2–3 months for life.

    BSH advice during COVID19 pandemic:

Liver stores last for a year and hence levels of B12 will not be affected if one to two 3 monthly injection is omitted in patients on maintenance parenteral B12 supplements. BSH supports omitting B12 injections even in this group during COVID19 outbreak at least until the surge has passed.

For patients who report symptoms in the weeks preceding B12 injection, oral B12 50-150 micrograms per day can be offered as an alternative because there will still be sufficient absorption. If still very symptomatic then B12 injection can be given with clear understanding that the interaction with healthcare increases transmission risk of COVID19. We suggest taking the opportunity to measure B12.

B12 deficiency thought to be diet related

    NICE 2019 Recommends:

Advise people either to take oral cyanocobalamin tablets 50–150 micrograms daily between meals or have a twice-yearly Hydroxocobalamin 1 mg injection.

In vegans, treatment may need to be life-long, whereas in other people with dietary deficiency replacement treatment can be stopped once the vitamin B12 levels have been corrected and the diet has improved.

    BSH advice during COVID outbreak:

As these patients are B12 replete, B12 supplements can be suspended during the outbreak.

This group of patients can also be offered oral B12 50 mcg daily between meals if needed.

We suggest measuring serum B12 level before restarting injected B12 replacement again after the outbreak.

Give dietary advice about foods that are a good source of vitamin B12: Good sources of vitamin B12 include Eggs, meat, milk and other dairy products and fish (salmon and cod). Foods which have been fortified with vitamin B12 (for example some soy products, and some breakfast cereals and breads) are good alternative sources.

  12. OldTim – from last night

Just checked with my surgery and my wife’s B12 injection has indeed been cancelled/ postponed. Advice was that there is enough protection to last up to a year, but certainly enough to last until lockdown is over. Wasn’t happy with that so did a bit of digging. My wife’s need is mainly due to her vegan diet, although she was anemic before then, so she can probably go without for a few months, but if there are more health related reasons why you need a B12 boost then you (or BT) should talk to your GP – not the receptionist- to reschedule an appointment to get the jag. Stay safe.

  15. Canamalar it looks like OCD obsession on

    Ernie..,

or maybe it is a demonstration of the already proven links between asthma and air quality, as you say, plenty of work still to be done on the subject and hopefully will be done but as a theory, it appears to support previous extensive research into the subject. Air quality has a direct affect on asthma.

1/ B12 injections, once you’re established on them, give enough to last years.

GP Surgeries are only seeing people WHO NEED TO BE SEEN; a lot of routine stuff is being cancelled/postponed.

2/ B12 deficiency , when due to diet [ commonly vegan] can be treated by oral B12, which you should be able to get in any reputable health food shop

3/Don’t inject disinfectant, not even Toilet Duck.
