BRENDAN RODGERS has assured Kasper Schmeichel he will “absolutely love” his Celtic experience.
The legendary Danish international keeper is on his way to The States to catch up with his new team-mates after signing one-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.
Schmeichel, 37, is ready for the challenge of succeeding fans’ favourite Joe Hart who has hung up his gloves at the same age after his three years at Parkhead in which he won seven honours, including a hat-trick of titles.
JUST CAPITAL…Brendan Rodgers discusses Kasper Schmeichel’s move to Celtic to Celtic TV in Washington.
The former England No.1 said farewell in fine style with a triumphant Scottish Cup Final exit after the 1-0 victory over Philippe Clement’s Ibrox runners-up at Hampden on May 25.
Hart won 75 caps for his country, but that extraordinary figure is eclipsed by his replacement’s 105 appearances for the Danes, the last coming in Euro 24 when his nation went out 2-0 to hosts Germany in the last 16.
Now Schmeichel is preparing for the next stage of his colourful career that has seen him play for Leicester City, Nice and Anderlecht in successive seasons.
After England, France and Belgium, the towering shotstopper is now preparing for life in Scotland and his former King Power gaffer is certain he will be a success at the champions.
Rodgers, preparing for the Hoops’ opening match against DC United in Washington in the early hours of tomorrow morning, said: “First and foremost, he’s a top-class goalkeeper.
“He’s one of the most driven players I’ve ever worked with in my career. I know what his qualities are from a football perspective.
“But I also know Kasper as a person and he’s a great guy. He has experience, he’s charismatic and he’ll be able to support the group.
POINTING THE WAY AHEAD…Kasper Schmeichel is preparing for life at Celtic.
“I’m really happy to bring someone of Kasper’s quality in to the football club.
“I’ve also said to him that this will be one of the best experiences of his life, coming to a club this size. I know that he will absolutely love this club.”
Rodgers is looking forward to getting the ball rolling against the local side before the meeting with Premier League pair Manchester City, on Wednesday, and Chelea, a week today.
The Irishman, speaking to Celtic TV, added: “We’re stepping up each pre-season game.
“It’s another step forward in our match fitness.
“Our main aim is getting to the Kilmarnock game in a really good place physically.”
The champions are scheduled to kick off their bid for a fourth successive Premiership crown against the Ayrshire club on Flag day in the east end of Glasgow on Sunday August 4.
