‘ABSOLUTELY SOLID,’ CELTIC SUPREMO BACKS UNDER-PRESSURE NANCY

UNDER-FIRE Wilfried Nancy will be given TWO transfer windows to put things right at Celtic.

That’s the promise from chief-executive Michael Nicholson to the beleagured new Hoops manager who has seen the champions lose four consecutive games since his surprise appointment as long-term successor to Brendan Rodgers who resigned in late October.

Martin O’Neill, of course, stepped in to take charge in an interim capacity until the Parkhead powerbrokers found someone for a permanent role.

After the Irishman’s seven wins in eight outings, Nancy and three of his Columbus Crew backroom staff arrived a fortnight ago, but they have walked into a storm after the club’s worst run in FORTY-SEVEN years.

The Frenchman has presided over losses to Hearts, AS Roma, St Mirren and now Dundee United and must arrest the slide into oblivion when Aberdeen provide the opposition in the east end of Glasgow on Sunday afternoon.

Prior to the latest setback, club supremo Nicholson was asked about what sort of backing Nancy can expect and he replied: “Absolutely solid. As I said, it’s not even two weeks ago when we spoke about Wilfried and his appointment.

“There’s never any time to start at Celtic and it has been challenging.

“We’ve had some disappointing results, not least on Sunday.

“And, in that respect, I understand that Celtic supporters are concerned about where we are. I understand and I respect the right of every supporter to express their discontent and to share that with us.

“But we know where we want to go. And step by step, all of our job is to support Wilfried, his team and the squad to take us where we want to get to.”

IN THE DARK…Wilfried Nancy arrives at Tannadice.

Nicholson, speaking to Celtic TV, added: “The starting point is now we’ve been working and met with Wilfried this week to discuss recruitment ahead of the January transfer window and also looking ahead to the summer transfer window because we know that we’ve got a project to support here.

“We’re excited about where we’re going to get to. That’s going to take time both, as I say, day to day within the training environment, but also month to month, window to window.

“And then we know that when we get to that stage in the summer, hopefully having had success this season, we’ll be looking ahead to next season with great optimism with Wilfried.”

The reaction of the Celtic support will be interesting at the weekend if Celtic struggle for a fifth time against the Dons.
