Abuser hypocrisy, United and Atletico

939

I don’t know what was said to Neil Lennon after the victory over Dunfermline last week but if it caused him to react I can imagine the tone.  The few visits I made to the South Stand during Gordon Strachan’s tenure left an indelible image of life as a Celtic manager.

Whatever Kirk Broadfoot did or did not say to Rangers fans towards the end of their defeat at Kilmarnock yesterday, does anyone seriously think it contained more invective than has been hurled at the player for most of his career?

The self-righteous indignation some football fans exhibit when an employee earning [insert a completely irrelevant figure here]exhibits intolerance to what would get you barred for life from any other workplace in the country is the epitome of hypocrisy.

Garry Kenneth, who is likely to face Celtic at Tannadice on Sunday, today told the world he will not be renewing his contract when it expires at the end of the season, saying, “Dundee United are a feeder club, it has always been like that.” Ouch.  Whatever Kenneth thinks of United he should at least respect their fans emotional investment in the club to be a whole lot more careful with his words.  Should make for a tense afternoon in the United defence, especially if we can put the big guy under some pressure.

Big game on Wednesday.  A win would fire enormous impetus into our season.  Whatever the outcome, the game will provide Neil Lennon with a guide on how to play in the hugely important month ahead.

You got your puddings mixed up. Broony is a pudding but he’s gotta play agin the Spaniards so as we can market him and get as many of our spondoolikks back as we can. Sadly the Euro cup thingymabob is just that, an exercise with ALL our focus on the Championship. So sell the puddin after he plays midweek. We MUST win the league this season, no fail

    Sound good to me

  2. Anyone know if Scott Browne’s current injury is recurrence of the ankle problem that has troubled him on and off for some time now.

If so the long term prospects do not look good for the player, particularly the way he goes bullheaded into tackles.

Am I the ony one who thinks the ragers back line are extremely slow .

How many times lately have their CBs been struggling to stop a one on one with their keeper .

Big Dan has been slaughtered by the LL all season yet we are told these two over govan way are solid and a great partnership .

I watched their highlights against D Utd and the crosses that were getting right across their six yrd line was shocking ,add to that guys like Harkins outstripping them for pace ,leads me to believe the LL have been up to their old tricks again

  5. Scott Brown and his agent should have been given a cut off date in the summer for a new contract,if he didnt sign it then he should have been punted.I think PL has been sold a pup here.

Dont quite agree with you that Euro games are just an exercise.

Surely every young player with any sort of ambition wants to impress on the international stage as well as winning the SPL.

I think we can certainly both agree that whether it be at left back or in midfield Joe is vital to the team.

A fantastic signing who we need to get on a new contract. 2 years left on his current deal but it would be nice to reward him for his displays and i would definitely like to see him remain at Celtic for many years.

I even thought Glenda had a good game. Quick and aggressive. Poor wee Gowzer had a special welcome home.

Even big Dan won everything in the air (although against Gowzer and Hasselbank I think James Forrest would win everything in the air).

Credit where it is due…the bhoys all played very well but Sammi was on fire. When he runs with purpose and his mane flaps in the wind behind him you would think you were watching a Greek internationalist who has played at World Cups and European Championships. Wait a minute……..he is.

His run and cut back for James Forrest was superb.

  13. Former Celtic forward Juninho saw enough of Neil Lennon in his short period at the club to be convinced that the Northern Irishman had a bright future in coaching.

The Brazilian World Cup winner, who also played for Celtic’s Europa League opponents Atletico Madrid, identified Lennon’s man-management as the key element to his success as captain of the club, and the principle portent of what lay in store.

“He had all the qualities to be a good manager, to become a big name in managerial terms,” Juninho, now president of the Brazilian side Ituano, told BBC Scotland.

“He was also a manager on the pitch, talking to the players all the time, trying to organise the team, and I think he knows how to deal with players.”

Asked about the pressure and expectation those involved at Celtic have to cope with, he added: “As a player he did it, now he needs to do it as a manager, but that’s normal when you’re in charge of a big club.

“They expect the results and when the results don’t come they want to change, and the first person to change is the manager. I don’t think that’s right, but it’s the way football is and I think he knows how to deal with the pressure.”

Despite playing for less than a season at Celtic Park, Juninho savoured the experience of playing in huge European matches against Barcelona and AC Milan.

“It’s incredible to play big games like that,” he continued. “The supporters go to the ground differently from the way they go to other games. It’s a different atmosphere.

I had to adapt to Scottish football and to Celtic and that’s why I couldn’t play like I wanted to at Celtic

    Juninho

“When Celtic play at home, their supporters are incredible – 60,000 of them – so it’s always difficult to play against clubs like Celtic at home.”

Attendances and Celtic Park’s fortress-like quality on big European nights have diminished somewhat since Juninho’s time at the club.

Nevertheless, he believes Celtic – and Rangers – are the equal, in terms of stature, of clubs like Atletico, despite the discrepancy in quality of their respective leagues and television-generated income.

Juninho looks back on his time in Glasgow with some regret, having failed to reproduce the form that won the hearts of Middlesbrough fans.

“I expected it to be different because when I spoke to Martin O’Neill he was very excited to bring me to Celtic, so I imagined he knew [my best position],” he went on.

“When I arrived, he wanted me to play like the fourth man of the midfield and I normally played behind the striker or up front with the striker.

Diego is a player rated highly by fellow Brazilian Juninho

“Then in my first game I had a dispute and I don’t think he had the patience with me. I had to adapt to Scottish football and to Celtic and that’s why I couldn’t play like I wanted to at Celtic.

“I don’t blame only O’Neill. I was upset with me too because I didn’t play my best at Celtic.”

Juninho’s time at Atletico Madrid was also less than successful, despite a promising start, principally because of a broken leg he suffered before his first season at the Vicente Calderon Stadium was up.

“My first six months were fantastic. I was playing well, the team was playing well and then everything changed after my injury. When I came back it wasn’t the same,” he admitted.

Juninho confesses to knowing little about the current Celtic team, or that of Atletico Madrid, owing to the number of Brazilian games he has to watch.

But he highlights Atletico’s Brazilian playmaker Diego as one of the principle threats to Celtic’s chances of victory on Wednesday.

“He always looks to the opposite goal, and I like that kind of player. When he has the ball, he always thinks to play up front and that’s why he can cause a lot of damage to the other teams.”

His primary concern, though, is Ituano, the club with whom he started his career in 1989 and where he is now president.

“There’s not much time for anything else. The administration is a lot of work, but I’m enjoying this other part of my life,” he concluded.

He shouldn’t walk back into the team on Wednesday, don’t know who would be dropped to accomodate him, midfield is an area where we have strength in depth.

Unless he signs new contract he shouldn’t be picked, unless we have players out injured.

Regarding Broonie, let him go..if he wanted to be here ,he would sign. All the guff from the LL is just that ,utter guff. Anyone who thnks otherwise is deluded, get a Million (???)for him and let him collect yellow cards somewhere else.
