Abuser hypocrisy, United and Atletico

939

I don’t know what was said to Neil Lennon after the victory over Dunfermline last week but if it caused him to react I can imagine the tone.  The few visits I made to the South Stand during Gordon Strachan’s tenure left an indelible image of life as a Celtic manager.

Whatever Kirk Broadfoot did or did not say to Rangers fans towards the end of their defeat at Kilmarnock yesterday, does anyone seriously think it contained more invective than has been hurled at the player for most of his career?

The self-righteous indignation some football fans exhibit when an employee earning [insert a completely irrelevant figure here]exhibits intolerance to what would get you barred for life from any other workplace in the country is the epitome of hypocrisy.

Garry Kenneth, who is likely to face Celtic at Tannadice on Sunday, today told the world he will not be renewing his contract when it expires at the end of the season, saying, “Dundee United are a feeder club, it has always been like that.” Ouch.  Whatever Kenneth thinks of United he should at least respect their fans emotional investment in the club to be a whole lot more careful with his words.  Should make for a tense afternoon in the United defence, especially if we can put the big guy under some pressure.

Big game on Wednesday.  A win would fire enormous impetus into our season.  Whatever the outcome, the game will provide Neil Lennon with a guide on how to play in the hugely important month ahead.

Maritimo have accepted that they may struggle to hold on to striker Baba Diawara and are prepared to talk to Celtic about a possible transfer.

Celtic manager Neil Lennon has said that he is still keeping tabs on the Senegalese forward who is currently in prolific form in the Portuguese league with 12 goals.

Maritimo chairman Carlos Pareira said that while he wanted to keep his star player, he would be open to talks with Celtic. He did warn though that other clubs were also tracking Diawara’s situation.

“Celtic are interested and we are waiting to see what happens,” Pareira said.

“I would like to keep Baba because he is the top scorer in the league and is doing very well but I accept he may leave in January and there are a number of clubs who are interested in his services.

“If Celtic want to talk again about Baba, I don’t have a problem with that,” he told the Daily Record. “Business is business and we are waiting to see if there is any to be done.

“There is plenty of time before the window reopens, so there is no rush.”

Diawara was a signing target for the Parkhead club in the summer but a deal to bring the player to Scotland collapsed.

The Portuguese club cited “visa issues” as the reason for the deal being called off but STV learned that no application for a work permit endorsement had been made.

  9. I know most of you have seen the latest from RTC.com, but for the few CQN’ers who have missed it oh and seemingly all of Scotlands professional journalists;

If you bought a badly run business that had defrauded the national treasury for a decade, and which had frustrated legitimate enquiry into its tax affairs at every turn, you might want to turn over a new leaf. If you planned on running the business for the medium or long-term, you would want to normalise your relationship with HMRC. A couple of goodwill gestures would not go amiss. Certainly, you would not want to make things worse.  Would you?

Of course, divining the thought processes of Craig Whyte is not an easy task. Trying to see a path for making an “on the radar” profit from his ownership of Rangers is even more difficult. Whyte’s strategy for keeping Rangers alive in the short-term is a little easier to see.  No bill of significant size gets paid without legal action. Lawyers, tax advisers, or even the taxman himself, Whyte does not appear to play favourites.  Since taking over Rangers on 6th May of this year, Whyte’s Rangers have been deducting PAYE and national insurance from  players’ salaries. However, the club has not been passing this money on to HMRC.  In fact, the club has fallen behind on current remittances by an amount that is fast approaching £2 million.

This is aside from the “Big Case” and its £36m in tax and interest (with penalties to be added). This is aside from the “Wee Case” and its £2.3m (tax and interest) that remains to be paid (plus approximately £1.4m in penalties). This is a new and completely separate dispute between Rangers FC and Her Majesty’s government.

  10. Just heard that an old friend – best man at my first wedding – ended his life by jumping in front of a London tube train. It happened a couple of weeks ag, and he wasn’t exactly a close friend as I hadn’t seen him for more than 20 years.

I only mention it in the context of the Gary Speed suicide.

My old friend was apparently suffering from severe depression, but even so, how much pain must you be in to end it all, especially in such a horrific and public way?

I have never known clinical depression, and therefore I don’t understand it and how it affects the sufferer. I sincerely hope I never do have to face it.

  12. The Battered Bunnet on

    Tom, sad news.

Vmhan, if Rangers have indeed stopped remitting their monthly payoll taxes, beats the heck out of me why HMRC aren’t arranging a standard ispection of the books. It’s a very typical thing, not least for companies that have, shall we say, a chequered history in that regard.

  13. TBB –

Technically, they don’t have to forward the tax money until they submit their P35 at the end of the tax year. But as you say, given their recent bad credit history . . .

  14. The Battered Bunnet on

    Tom

Actually, no, that’s not correct. They are obliged at law to remit payroll deductions by the end of the following month. I think RTC’s point is that if they have not completed the returns paperwork, they are not technically ‘defrauding’ the Revenue, a criminal offence for directors, but the company nevertheless is breaking the law in failing to remit the tax collected, and one would expect HMRC to be sanguine about taking action.

  15. If it was anybody else they would be in jail by now. Pay your taxes you cheating thieves.

Others are paying for your social services, the fire brigade, the defence of your country, your hospitals, nurses, doctors, paramedics, ambulance drivers, your counsellors, your drug rehabilitation; even your police that march in protection of your bigoted and sectarian celebrations.

Just pay your taxes leeches. Maybe one day it’ll be your kid that needs the social services.

  16. Vmhan –

It will still be hot and sunny at Easter, not as scorching as December/January.

You’ll find it a lot more comfortable weather-wise.

So they could maybe get away with not making payments for two months but by month three would be pursued for month one and so one each month?

Using the wage and tax bill RTC mentioned, two months unpaid tax would pay month three’s wages. So it might be a one off to buy time to January or later?
