“I said to the players at half time that we were shaming the club at the moment and they had to go out and show some pride in the shirt”, the words of Neil Lennon to the BBC after the game on Saturday.
Pride in the shirt is a requirement any manager should ask of his team, and it is notable that the subsequent goal-scorers both have strong connections to the club, but it probably had little to do with the second half performance from Anthony Stokes, Charlie Mulgrew and our the impressive James Forrest. Calls to pride are limited in what they can achieve, genuine talent is far more effective.
At the AGM on Friday and again in his post-match comments on Saturday, Neil alluded to the fragility of his own position. Had the game finished 3-0 to Kilmarnock I think he would have walked away. This would have been a great pity.
Neil is learning on the job. He was not gifted the benefits of experience without actually having to work through difficult times as a manager. Before his thoughts turn to his own position, before our season is too far gone to save, he should recruit an experienced assistant. Someone who knows the challenges of working with a disparate group of players, who can deal with the challenges of a demanding board and supporter base.
The need for a mentor was evident 18 months ago and is screamingly so now. For the sake of Celtic, do the necessary.

were too loyal to lennon. it is totally unheard of for any manager who is failing badly at his job to be offered a more experianced man to come and teach him his job.
we dont have the time to keep a trainee manager and hope he gets it right eventually.
i ask this , if it were any other novice manager in charge who had no history with the club would you still back him ?
no man is bigger than celtic and what we need is a manager who has the experiance and qualities to take our club forward. im not anti lennon im just pro celtic.
hail hail.
Mentor.
You mean like you get when your serving an apprenticeship?
Im as far removed from the day to day workings of Lennoxtown or Celtic Park as most on here, but you wouldnt need to be Pep Guardiola or Jose Moaningrinho to see there are problems, big problems.
Maybe its time for wagons to be circled internally (sounds painful) and look at the current management and support structure structure, identify whats going wrong, where and why before we bring in another individual to make matters worse, jaysus we have more coaches than Parks of Hamilton.

For a second there I thought you were talking about the Burger King.
Remember Burger Kings used to be Wimpys?
I think they now only exist in areas that BK couldn’t be bothered going to. Like Fraserburgh or Motherwell. (thumbsup)

Managing people is a very difficult thing to master.
Be it footballers, potato pickers or planners the art of getting the best out of people is something that needs to be experienced.
In my personal experience my initial arrogant view that I knew it all was only replaced by maturity after many mistakes. On reflection my biggest mistake as a young manager was surrounding myself with friend who I thought I knew.
Most managers of football clubs start out with confidence that they know the score and fail initially but after a few hard learned lessons they become seasoned professional managers.
Of course today’s footballers are not the same ones that Jock Stein managed and the skills required for the job today are as much about diplomacy as motivation.
Lennon will learn from his mistakes but I doubt if a mentor is a good idea unless he thinks that this is necessary.
I think that given the chance he will make a good manager but he must be given that chance and we should all back him as best we can.

dentistry is a 5 year course… After which BK can retire and watch his savings mount as his wife rakes in an income that would shame PL’s ( although we all know PL knows no shame!)
Looking forward to watching Kayal getting his teeth into games snapping at the oppositions heels knowing his wife is on hand to repair him at home
Bloke109 is Neil Lennon
“Do they have an AGM tomorrow?”
No, we are the elite Spin Doctors por cierto.
There’s no chance in Hell of Neil accepting an “advisor” at this point.
If he got rid of big Mjallby it would look like a panic measure, like he was second guessing his judgement, like he was indecisive. If he did that and then took on a mentor or advisor it would look like he had lost the plot completely and, in event it still didn’t work out, that would be it. The end of his career.
Neil’s going to have to soldier on with what he’s got.

bbc website, can’t paste as on my phone
When the manager takes off his best player (Cha Du Ri) and continues to play a centre back who makes Gary Caldwell look like Franco Baresi, then we should take the hint and act before it is all too late. Our last 2 league winning managers are both out of a job, and if we beg. one might come back and sort out this shambles.

Internet bigot Stephen Birrell facing prison term
A man is facing a jail term for posting sectarian comments about Catholics and Celtic fans on a Facebook page called “Neil Lennon Should be Banned”.
Stephen Birrell, 28, from Gallowgate, Glasgow, admitted posting the religiously prejudiced abuse between 28 February and 8 March this year.
Glasgow Sheriff Court heard how he was caught after a police crackdown on sectarian internet campaigns.
Sentence on Birrell was deferred and he was told to expect a prison term.
The court heard how Birrell committed the offences just days after being released earlier from a 12-month jail sentence.
Celtic abuseProsecutor Mark Allan told the court that a special team of officers began investigating hate comments on the internet after the so-called Old Firm “shame game” on 3 March this year.
Mr Allan said: “They came across a site called ‘Neil Lennon Should Be Banned’ and noted that the accused had made various comments on the Facebook page.”
On 1 March, two days before the Old Firm match, Birrell posted: “Hope they (Celtic fans) all die. Simple. Catholic scumbags ha ha.”
On 4 March, the day after the game, he wrote: “Proud to hate Fenian tattie farmers. Simple ha ha.”
Four days later Birrell posted: “They’re all ploughing the fields the dirty scumbags.”
He also posted abuse directed at the Pope.
The court was told that the police traced Birrell to his then home in Dalmarnock on 23 April.
Deferring sentence for background reports, Sheriff Bill Totten told Birrell: “What you wrote was vile and hateful there is no place for these kind of remarks in our city or in our country.”
Sheriff Totten told Birrell that his comments could encourage impressionable people to behave in this way and were unacceptable.
He added: “You should be under no doubt very real harm does result from this. A substantial custodial sentence will probably have to be imposed in this case.”
The sheriff will also consider whether to ban Birrell from attending football matches.

I couldn’t agree more about the need for an experienced assistant. The current Celtic management team is filled with ex-players and friends, all from the same generation with similar playing experiences and I am guessing similar ideas on the game. In my opinion a great assistant to Neil would be Davie Hay. An ex-Celtic player and league winning manager who knows what it is all about. Has European experience of managing abroad and even domestically won a trophy as Livingston manager. Not to mention he has an eye for a player and was involved in bringing/scouting some great players for the club. All in all he has the necessary pre-requisites to be a great addition to the current Celtic management set-up.

PAUL You and few others have been quated on here that neil lennon is still learning his job at celtic.no im not buying into that,he has made plenty o f mistakes but he has still not learnt from them.he does need help .so iwould say that he says to mjalby.and parker to relinquest there positions.and he lenny should bring ,john yogi hughes ,and john collins to assist him .

timbhoy2 – Cool story, bro. (thumbsup)
EXILED TIM, if he is thinking about his own position I don’t see why he would object to a mentor.
Hamiltontim, I don’t think we need a great name, just someone who has been over the course a few times.
philvisreturns, I don’t think Willie McStay has the experience required as mentor.
MWD, no idea what you are on about.
Dan, I opposed the appointment of a rookie at the time but we are in the trenches now and have to chart a path to the league title. Not easy from here.
CultsBhoy, you must have had some pretty poor mentors. They are there to offer support not to undermine.
None of the mangers you mention had mentors, but look at the first clubs each manged:
O’Neill – Grantham Town, Stein – Dunfermline, McNeill – Clyde, Hay – Motherwell, Burns – Kilmarnock, Strachan – Coventry.
They had entirely different clubs to learn the job at.
79caps, yes, the novice assistants only add to the picture.
Gallagher, no one in mind but I would take anyone who has been over the course several times.
Moonbeams WD. \o/ Supporting Neil Lennon 100%. C’mon the hoops. –

He will be released in 3 months por cierto
Paul 67,
Excellent.
When Mowbray was about to leave the manager post at Celtic one of those proposed here was Dan Petrescu. In his first season he got promoted with Kuban Krasnodar to the highest level in Russia. Now in his second seson his team is seventh with one point less than Spartak Moscow. Spartak Moscow with a lot of expensive players is not much better Kuban with mostly local and cheap footballers.
Petrescu is only four years older Neil Lennon but these four years were practise with other clubs.
I remember that I said some time ago: do the right thing Celtic and find the club for Lennon where he can prictise manager job before he starts doing it for Celtic.
Paul 67, philvis
Totally agreed on a mentor.
I would consider Peter Reid
He has seen it , done it,helped Stoke in the EPL, experienced success, come back from failure & most importantly , he probably doesn’t need the money so he won’t be a Yes man.
RIP Betty Driver
You and your hotpots will be sorely missed.
fae Peterheid? Is he no deid?!

Zybczek- Dan Petrescu insists on his players looking like footballers, ie no daft brightly coloured boots.
A good shout if the job at CP becomes vacant[ which won’t be for a while, I hope!]
