Adam Idah, Norwich aiming high

319

At the beginning of the transfer window I predicted Adam Idah would not leave Norwich City until late August, if at all.  His transformational loan period at Celtic went a long way towards ensuring we won the league and Scottish Cup, but he remained backup to Kyogo and there is no immediate prospect of that changing, even if he arrives this summer.

Norwich have watched the player’s success at Celtic and have set thier price accordingly.  Forget the £6m being reported this week, City’s asking price is nearly twice that figure.  That’s a lot for someone who will spend much of his time on the Celtic bench.

Celtic paid £9m for Odsonne Edouard, also as a backup striker, six years ago, but that was under Peter Lawwell, who fulfilled his commitment to spend every penny that came in over any business cycle you care to mention.

Odsonne’s profile was different.  A PSG youth, Celtic correctly anticipated his value would appreciate.  Adam is three years older than Odsonne, when the French striker signed his permanent Celtic deal, and Adam’s tenure on the bench at Championship grounds will likely put a ceiling on where his value goes.

Adam crossed a line on Sunday and missed his club’s flight for thier preseason tour in Austria (he travelled later on his own).  This move is normally terminal for your relationship with fans.  The scenario occurs at Celtic more often than is reported, Celtic’s preferred reaction is to decline the move and not report “Not in the right frame of mind to play, boss” incidents, in an attempt to keep control of their options.  Not every muscle strain is actually a muscle strain.

Norwich were unable to do this and Adam is now regarded as an enemy within by the support.  Adam will likely get his move this month and if he comes to Celtic you and I will cheer him on.  Football is a harsh business, we are all participants.

You said 6m was the asking price, you said we should pay it without negotiating it down.

Pay the asking price every deal you do and you end up with a lot more money than if you don’t

    ————-

I may not be expressing myself sufficiently.

I am not saying pay £6m for Idah because that’s what is asked for, even less suggesting that for EVERY deal we pay the asking price without haggling.

I am saying that £6m is a fair price for THIS player in the particular circumstances of the market and his previous performances for us.

I am also saying that the financial benefit of the 2 months trying to get him for £4.5m of £5m is outweighed by the opportunity cost of paying £6m a while back and fully preparing the team for the CL.

“However if you look at a decision the Celtic Board made twenty years ago why argue the rights and wrongs, we have to go with the decisions that were made”

Thats what you dont do, though. You constantly reference 2004, you’ve just talked about it in reference to a comment about the transition from PL’s leadership to the present leadership team from a couple of years ago and thats ongoing.

“All doable without mentioning or worrying about any club in Ibrox”

PLease explain the relevance go that. It seems like another one of your randomly generated statements.

Re our club’s seeming obsession with Idah – a serviceable young pro – and the associated deal haggling it’s as if he’s the only available forward in the whole of world football.

I get – from the buns Chairman interview – that imposters like Sevco don’t have a Plan B; a contingency for anything that they do.

But surely Brendan and co have identified some other possibilities for our second striker position ?

As for Reo rumours; lovely player but surely we’d cash in anywhere near a solid 10m offer!

  5. DEXTER P. BAMPOT @ 1:23 PM,

    Think you are spot on…

I’ve described it as knowing the price of everything and the value of nothing

  6. If Norwich are asking that then we better have other options being actively pursued.

Maybe we are not doing our business in public (I live in hope) and at least one other striker will arrive soon.

Brendan on SSN, again saying he would have preferred new guys in for pre-season, despite what the ‘Big Jocks’ on here who know better say, nobody’s came near MOR valuation, Bernardo having medical.

It’s not as if we’ve not got more important things to be raging about.

Most of the support share Brendan Rodger’s desire for quality and the recognition that the squad balance is weak, and puny for Europe, so we’re in good company as we start again on Sunday. He wanted better quality when the ink was hardly dry on his own contract, and then demonstrated this with his team selections and cup final, finale. He’s shifted, by the bushel and the taxi’s are still running for the ‘sifted’ no wonder there’s parsimony, how bizarre, that years later we’re ‘ talking to a loanee ’ as Greg Taylor who rules the left, runs into his last year.

The bare minimum is a given, thats all well eventually get, disappointment as a Celtic supporter, to think that any money never mind all the money makes embellishment and strengthening somehow out of reach for such a big club, The new embarrassingly apparently untouchable wealth is becoming a burden and festers generational Celtic supporter’s genetic mistrust of ‘the board’ .

A £200 CL package will be beyond some of the ‘thinking men’ they’re already pricing young supporters out of Europe, so who’ll be there to make the unique atmosphere, for those watching on TV. There’s a squirell? wonder what’s up to with our money, increased demand, year on year when we were skint, it was laugh a minute stuff, with a guy at Ross Hall and one at Bothwell Services it was all we needed, it’s now a lot more serious.

    Were no laughing anymore CSC

Aren’t you? Why would you make an exception for Idah?

We dont know what Norwich would have demanded a two months ago, but I dont think paying an extra £1.5m to get him in sooner than 7 weeks before the start of the CL campaign, considering he’s been at Celtic for 6 months already is a very sensible way of doing business.

If we take that attitude with someone who wants to come so much he’s downed tools it suggests we’ll do it again and again until we’ve paid over the odds for a load of players.

If Norwich get anywhere near £12m for Idah I’d be amazed. An “asking price” is one thing…….

I think I’ve made it pretty clear that what I am saying is that if £6m will get the deal done then we should pay it without further delay. This is because, as I’ve said, I think he is worth £6m.

Maybe £6m won’t get it done (I personally think it would) and then it’s a different conversation. But you seem to simply disagree with me that IF £6m would get it over the line we should pay it NOW. You are entitled to that opinion. It seems to be a simple difference of opinion.

Bang on, as always. Nothing holds us back like the old firm.

  15. Bada, you’re right he did say that but it was nuanced too where he spoke about many moving parts etc in a transfer and he mentioned, more than once, the end of August as the checkpoint for judging the strength of squad. Preference is the key word. I, like many hoped to have more in but personally happy to wait to get the right ones rather than buy just to get numbers in. If we get to end of August and we have had a shit window I’ll be the first to criticise but time will tell.

As for Idah, we all have to admit we have no clue what Celtic and Norwich value him at but it can’t be that much if discussions, as it appears, are ongoing. Maybe Celtic has shifted more than Norwich, or maybe it’s Norwich who has conceded most up to now. Either way something or someone has to give, like in all transfer deals.

Also from what Brendan inferred, Bernardo will be confirmed by close of play today or first thing tomorrow given his use of the word ‘hours’ when asked how close he was to signing.

“Evolution in leadership from PL to the current team is good”

Theres no need to reference 2004. I was pointing out the contradiction in you telling me to move on from 2004 because of it irrelevance when you’re doing exactly the same thing yourself.

My point about 2004 was pretty much for your benefit alone as you seem to be very keen on talking about that particular time and Peter Lawwell in particular

You seem to be suggesting that given the position we find ourselves in now your solution is to look at how bankers approach strategic decision making. Is that not right? If not who do you think should be in charge of it?

  19. !!Bada Bing!! on

Kelvinbhoy- thanks for reply, Brendan said he wanted players in early, the moving parts stuff includes McKay and Nicholson’s total inexperience in work they haven’t done before, get an experienced professional in. I wonder if Nicholson would call our transfer activity ‘ world class ‘? As far as the Window closing,it’s just a date to get your business done by.Nightmares of Jo Inge Berget and a few other panic signings a few days before the CLQs…..

Why would we only do that for Idah? He’s not that good or our need isnt that great, so why would we not do it for other players in the future?

  22. Marco Di Sousa, Ayrton Inacio, Jorge Farah and Fernando Consul

There were actually four Brazilians on trial at Celtic, in September 1965. Although only two, Ayrton Inacio and Marco Di Sousa, played in the reserves. The two others, Jorge Farah and Fernando Consul, played in practice games. Although all four only stayed a short time at Celtic, Inacio later went on to a French side and then turned out with Clydebank in August 1967. Inacio finally returned to Portugal where he had settled with his family in February 1968

    What’s the matter you.!?

I know there is no need to reference 2004

I chose to reference 2004 because that’s when PL took over

Then put the circumstances of 2004 and twenty years later into some context

  25. Bada, I think each of our views/happiness with how the club is being run comes out in our posts. Let’s see what happens over next few weeks and my view might align with you or maybe even vice-versa. Either way we both want the same thing in a Celtic sense, a winning team playing the Celtc way.

  26. Dexter P. Bampot on

Where is the evidence that we would get Idah for £4.5m after further negotiating and that is the amount we would ‘have to pay’?

Genuinely, I don’t know what aspect of my opinion (and it is only an opinion) about which you seem to be confused.

I am saying that if £6m would get him NOW, then pay it.

If you are saying that £4.5m will get him at a later point then I am disagreeing that we should wait for the reasons I have already argued- 1. team progress in the interim and 2. to give a vote of confidence in the player (who I don’t think would be fazed).

The other point is that by putting off buying him in hope of saving that type of money, you invite the possibility of other teams- many also under pressure for signings- coming in and buying him.
