At the beginning of the transfer window I predicted Adam Idah would not leave Norwich City until late August, if at all. His transformational loan period at Celtic went a long way towards ensuring we won the league and Scottish Cup, but he remained backup to Kyogo and there is no immediate prospect of that changing, even if he arrives this summer.
Norwich have watched the player’s success at Celtic and have set thier price accordingly. Forget the £6m being reported this week, City’s asking price is nearly twice that figure. That’s a lot for someone who will spend much of his time on the Celtic bench.
Celtic paid £9m for Odsonne Edouard, also as a backup striker, six years ago, but that was under Peter Lawwell, who fulfilled his commitment to spend every penny that came in over any business cycle you care to mention.
Odsonne’s profile was different. A PSG youth, Celtic correctly anticipated his value would appreciate. Adam is three years older than Odsonne, when the French striker signed his permanent Celtic deal, and Adam’s tenure on the bench at Championship grounds will likely put a ceiling on where his value goes.
Adam crossed a line on Sunday and missed his club’s flight for thier preseason tour in Austria (he travelled later on his own). This move is normally terminal for your relationship with fans. The scenario occurs at Celtic more often than is reported, Celtic’s preferred reaction is to decline the move and not report “Not in the right frame of mind to play, boss” incidents, in an attempt to keep control of their options. Not every muscle strain is actually a muscle strain.
Norwich were unable to do this and Adam is now regarded as an enemy within by the support. Adam will likely get his move this month and if he comes to Celtic you and I will cheer him on. Football is a harsh business, we are all participants.

BOURNESOUPRECIPE @ 2:01 PM,
Yes, I remember the story of the Brazilian trialists…
Celtic fholk had a real fondness for Barrowfield back in the day, it was before my time but it must have been great to wonder into Barrowfield and see your hero’s…
Jinky was mine.
Hopefully the new Barrowfield will be open to spectators and it gets a new lease of life from a new generation.
Hail Hail

Where is the evidence that we would get Idah for £4.5m after further negotiating and that is the amount we would ‘have to pay’?
There isnt evidence, its hypothetical. But what isnt is you want to pay more than we need to, thats the point.
There is always the danger of someone else coming in, but in this case, the risk is so small and the benefits of bringing him in early are so minimal that the difference doesnt add up to whatever we’d need to pay to get him in sooner. If it runs into millions then its a definite no from me
I don think you understand what this means for us when we buy a player, its an attitude to every negotiation we go into. If we take this attitude with Idah we will take it with every negotiation we do, its never a one-off, there will be several Idah’s in every transfer window and we’ll pay over the odds for all of them until we cant anymore.
BSR
We had an ‘option to buy’ with Bernardo so fees must have been on the table from day one . That’s where suspicions of procrastination (did you ever see them in the ol’Burns Howff?) come in . Long signing talks cause long faces on CQN.
And if Norwich hadn’t changed manager Idah would probably have been pictured holding the Celtic scarf above his head at CP , weeks ago .
I would also question the wisdom of paying over the odds for a player who downs tools because they want a move.
Great for us now, not so great when his price is being forced down by demanding. move to a particular club
in future
“Football is a harsh business, we are all participants.” Cuts both ways

“But what isnt is you want to pay more than we need to, thats the point.”
Do you genuinely not get the point I’m making?
You accept that there is no evidence that the lesser fee will ever get him. Therefore how would paying £6m be paying more than we ‘need’?
Well done to the good people of Southport, cleaning their streets up,after those animals last night
We may be having a moot discussion if Norwich have now valued Idah at silly money.
However let’s take the example of buying a car.
You see it advertised at £X..
You’ve done your research, you’ve compared other prices and you know that it’s a fair price. You also have confirmation that it’s in include working order.
Of course, you are likely to make an initial offer of less than £X.
But sometimes, the seller says “no, sorry, that’s my price. I think it’s a fair price and if you don’t pay it I think somebody else will.”
What do you do?
idaho
is a no show
maybe a no go
12m or so
What if we’ve already offered £6m and Norwich have said no.
I’m less in the know than most but even the ITK guys have an imperfect record on outcomes, understandably so since we are always in for more players than we will ever transfer in to Celtic.
If we get Adam Idah & Paolo Bernardo in sometime over the next 7 days they will be in training at the same time as Alistair Johnston and AJ is the only one of that 3 likely to start a CL tie in 6 to 7 weeks time.
As for Nicholson’s and McKay’s lack of experience- don’t they have a very experienced negotiator in the building whose expertise they could seek?
SFTB- He’s part of the problem, not the solution, hire a professional.
With regard to those who would not pay £6m for Idah, I’m surprised. His contribution since the end of January delivered us both the League and Cup trophies.
In the game v Motherwell at Fir Park, Celtic were going nowhere until he came on. He promptly scored the equalizet which galvanised the team and supporters and then put us a goal in front. He delivered the points. At Ibrox we needed to ensure that we did not lose. Getting a point was everything that mattered. Again after THEY equalised to make it 2-2 everyone thought the momentum had switched to them. Idah again came on and ragdolled their defence twice before putting the ball in the net to put us ahead in the 90th minute. He was instrumental in ensuring we got that all important point. He scored in three minutes at Killie to settle us in what was supposed to be a nerve wracking title clincher that everyone was apprehensive about. He scored in the 90th minute at Hampden to deliver the Scottish Cup for us to deliver a delicious win and Double over THEM.
He is fast, has quick feet, takes a good penalty and is a good header of the ball. We have witnessed first hand what he HAS done for us and we expect him to do the same again and we are confident that he will. £6m is a small amount to pay for him. We paid £5m for Ajeti for God’s sake.
The club need to get him signed without further delay.
DEXTER P. BAMPOT
That’s easy isn’t it – you call his bluff and knock him down on the price. It sounds like you’ve overvalued the car you’re after which is a good thing because it means you have more money to spend on other things when you get one.
No one else wants Idah at what we want to pay. Idah doesn’t want to go anywhere else. We are in a very strong negotiating position, not one we find ourselves in often. Time to make full use of our position

If you are still looking in- I’m sorry you got it in the neck from some on here.
Celtic cyberspace can be a very bitchy place between rival sites. Paul Larkin was being bitchy about CQN last week and sometimes people on this site can reciprocate but, in the whole of cyberspace, I’ve seen much more anti-CQN sentiment than I have seen on here about any other Celtic site. And I can’t recall anthing in Paul’s leaders that has ever mentioned other Celtic sites with critical comments- maybe I’m wrong on that but, in your infrequent returns to this site, you have taken issue with Paul’s leaders and referred to the general views on CQN out there with something approaching joyous self-vindication.
I read your blog quite regularly and I value it. I read Sentinel Celts e-tims and The Huddleboard too and still get to read Joe McHugh’s site though I was banned from posting there once.
Site owners take a lot of garbage from people to whom they provide a platform. You get it bad too.
In that spirit, I think you should reflect that , at times, you have played the man and not the ball too- it’s hard to resist the temptation to retaliate – but sometimes you have gone over the top on points that have not targeted you as a person or as a site owner.
And so have I, but I’m not proud of it.
Keep writing your stuff- you write very well- but sometimes, emotion overwhelms your rational side and small stuff becomes bigger than it need be.
Sing the Joe Hart “Don’t Worry- Be Happy” tune to yourself- we’re all in a good place and Transfer window angst will leave us all quite soon, as it always has done every season once the action starts, and we can go back to nursing our wrath with memories of the Willo Flood window and how it definitely absolutely no question lost us a league once.
Take Care
Reminiscent of Rachel Reeves…. Paul67 is asking you to….
Prepare to be disappointed (especially if you rely on the winter fuel allowance tae keep the gas oan)
£12 million? That is what Delbhoy used to refer to as ‘double bubble’, and which if true (which I doubt) means we are walking away. A long way. And anyway Paul tells us, he’d be lucky to get a game wi the Bhoys.
Bada- they’re all amateurs. There’s no course in Transfer negotiation to pass to become a professional. Ex-Pros have done stupid things like pay 500k for Martin Hayes when Arsenal would have sold him for less.
If an amateur can’t become experienced after 20 years then they are guilty of that old jibe about experience:-
Some people claim 20 years experience in their job but really they only have one year’s learning and they have just repeated that for the next 19 years.
TURKEYBOY – Maybe Rodgers and McGregor should “hawd their weeshd and shossht”. There is a reason they have made public statements twice in 7 days regarding squad quality. They are concerned ! Simply put – targets identified months ago have not been signed. They may still happen but I’m as concerned as Rodgers and McGregor
I don’t trust this board / recruitment team to show ambition and get deals over the line. Prudence I get , scrounging I don’t!
Peter Lawwell back in the building, Celtic’s transfer windows become desperate but we so need to thank him for Edouard….
I read this paragraph:
“A statement on the Rangers Charity Foundation website read: “Join us at Edmiston House for our exclusive Q and A night with Rangers manager, Philippe Clement on Tuesday, September 10”
Then I wondered will they charge them, next paragraph:
“Tickets cost just £38.50pp plus £1.50 booking fee and include a welcome drink and pie on arrival. ”
Their board doesn’t miss a trick to get cash off them 😅🤣😂
I think accountancy and law training and a very solid understanding of the market is as a very good formal background when it comes to negotiating.
But being able to draw on the experience of an expert is invaluable
THEORIGINALSADIESBHOY @ 2:55 PM,
Very good synopsis of Adam’s impact in a very short period of time.
The lad should have been signed, sealed , delivered before we went Stateside.

As for Nicholson’s and McKay’s lack of experience- don’t they have a very experienced negotiator in the building whose expertise they could seek?
I find the lack of understanding for the job roles – CFO / SEO / Director of Operations, Director of Finance etc quite laughable,
To think all these guys have not had multiple years of experiencing transfer activity, and indeed having responsibilities within each transaction is just ludicrous.
Th sign off for corporate goverance would demand these people have responsibility.
Just daft to think otherwise.
The clamour for a director of football, what exactly is that job roles responsibilities to be ?
Does it need to be a “football person” or is an accountant/bankeer/MBA person better qualified.
Will the director of football come and operate outside the corporate budget ?
or will they just be the person to buffer from the manager.
Me, offer last bid, £7 million, if no, get Myoski
me,
offer our last bid now at 3m.

Brendan saying we cant be ‘schnoozing’
*snoozing
Ajax have got themselves in a pickle because of transfer dealings and negotiations.
They have an advisory board that examines every transfer but it missed a series of major mistakes and possible conflicts of interest in transfers concluded by their technical director
An investigation by KPMG concluded that there had been no conflict of interest on Mislintat’s part, but criticised the club for giving him a free rein to buy and sell players.
“ Gerben Everts, chair of the VEB, said Lenderink’s claims that the supervisory board scrutinised all player transfers had been exposed as worthless.
“If you say that the conditions have been properly applied and 15 people reviewed every decision, and KMPG now say that’s absolute rubbish, you’ve got some explaining to do,””
Finance Director and the Technical director wee sacked

GLENDALYSTONSILS
Our accountant went to Portugal to finalise Paulo in June since the he’s been for 10 medicals and signed 10 ten times. The annoying thing is that both him and Adam were in the Hoops, so it’s as you were.
It’s the ones that haven’t been revealed or thought of, that cause the angst.
If Norwich want £12M for Idah why have Celticcontinued to pursue the deal ?
Surely we should have have moved on to the next person on our list (no laughing at the back).
This makes us look even more pathetic, pretending to be after a player that we won’t go to that figure for and, this is the real crux of the matter; why have we not moved on from this player to the next on the list, is it because we don’t have a list ?
I’d add trustworthiness to the list of qualities needed for football executive staff involved with transfers
The days of brown envelopes and meeting cloughie at service station seem to be long gone, even Harry Rednapp-types with their Range Rovers and apperances on deadline day seem to have stopped but you still get shenanigans like Ajax’s technical director getting sacked for sending pics of his nob to colleagues or his replacement selling and buying bad players from agents who are friends.
Nobody is above it but boring professionals being in charge of the deals does make it far less of a risk
You really think Celtic only have 1 player on a list at a time and that they don’t have a number of potential deals on the go??
JUSTSHATERED @ 4:10 PM,
What makes you think Idah is worth 12 mn!?
It’s a nonsense made up figure
Most realistically see him around the 6 mn mark, whether Celtic will pay that for him is another thing
Hail Hail
Adam Idah’s (or any given player’s) value to the selling club at the start of the transfer window is inevitably different to his value to the same club on the last day of the window.
And similarly for the purported buying club.
Values are not fixed, they flex with demand and circumstances. The price as always will be the equilibrium reached by a willing buyers and a willing seller. Buyers may become more willing at the end of the window, and sellers less willing, price rises. And vice versa.
This is not controversial. The idea that there is an irrevocable price fixed for a player by a selling club is for the fairies.
An early deal is likely to be an expensive deal.
Equally, being too late and missing out is an expensive business too.
The great thing about the transfer window is that it gives us all permission to talk inconsequential baws like this for two months.
I was hoping we’d sign players to improve the team on the European stage. I’m now wondering if we have a team to win the league. I’m not kidding when I say Celtic rangers are 50-50 going into the season. They are slowly putting a team together – if they add the 6’3 twente captain he adds physicality to a team with pace in wide areas. They are 1-2 signings away from being better than last season – I smell complacency at Celtic , this would be a HUGE mistake. Still plenty time – get the finger/cheque book out
