Adam Idah, Norwich aiming high

319

At the beginning of the transfer window I predicted Adam Idah would not leave Norwich City until late August, if at all.  His transformational loan period at Celtic went a long way towards ensuring we won the league and Scottish Cup, but he remained backup to Kyogo and there is no immediate prospect of that changing, even if he arrives this summer.

Norwich have watched the player’s success at Celtic and have set thier price accordingly.  Forget the £6m being reported this week, City’s asking price is nearly twice that figure.  That’s a lot for someone who will spend much of his time on the Celtic bench.

Celtic paid £9m for Odsonne Edouard, also as a backup striker, six years ago, but that was under Peter Lawwell, who fulfilled his commitment to spend every penny that came in over any business cycle you care to mention.

Odsonne’s profile was different.  A PSG youth, Celtic correctly anticipated his value would appreciate.  Adam is three years older than Odsonne, when the French striker signed his permanent Celtic deal, and Adam’s tenure on the bench at Championship grounds will likely put a ceiling on where his value goes.

Adam crossed a line on Sunday and missed his club’s flight for thier preseason tour in Austria (he travelled later on his own).  This move is normally terminal for your relationship with fans.  The scenario occurs at Celtic more often than is reported, Celtic’s preferred reaction is to decline the move and not report “Not in the right frame of mind to play, boss” incidents, in an attempt to keep control of their options.  Not every muscle strain is actually a muscle strain.

Norwich were unable to do this and Adam is now regarded as an enemy within by the support.  Adam will likely get his move this month and if he comes to Celtic you and I will cheer him on.  Football is a harsh business, we are all participants.

  1. I have come to the conclusion, that us, the supporters are nothing short of mugs. The sickening board take us for granted , always have, always will.

They are simply not fit for purpose, but what can we do that will not have an adverse effect us, the fans.

Getting more disgusted by the day

Why on earth would a great manager like Brendan stick around when the financial support we and he crave for, is not forthcoming. If I was BR, i’d be looking for a new job pronto

B78- my suggestion was a Director of Football role ,to oversee, transfers, squad succession, Academy etc, what’s Mark Lawwell up to? You said he would go on to bigger things? Still available?

  3. BURNLEY78 @ 7:34 PM,

I was just goshing with St Stivs about the MBAs… a very impressive qualification and well done to those who have gained it.

My first post on CQN must have been getting on for twenty years ago.

Rangers were a different beast at that time but I made the same point then.

To me the old firm is toxic, Celtic and what they stand for is much better than that.

The intervening twenty years have proved me right, whatever went on at Ibrox, whatever their ethos, we should be nowhere near that.

    Cheating, hating, bigotry, hubris…

The antithesis of Celtic, yes we need to look at where they are, yes, we need to be better than them but if that means dragging our values down to their level – no thanks.

If Celtic were tenth in the league I’d still support them.

If Celtic was championing bigotry, racism and cheating to be competitive, no thank you, I’d rather follow Wycombe Wanderers.

TBB- But there comes a time, when you have to move on,and give yourself time to target another player, £12 million is laughable, even for a starting point.

*who said we’re no, around 59 year ago we were on the crest of a wave, we had at last won a trophy, “big Billy’s bumper” as the back pages of the Sundays called it, and walloped the huns 6 days later, the 2-1 scoreline flattered them in a game where a big Yogi piledriver broke the hun goalie martin’s fingers, when it was announced that we were in for man of many clubs who had literally tore the aforesaid Billy a new one in the semis.

We were NOT alone as cup and league runners up, by 1 point to both Kille and the calvinists, Dunfermline also put in a bid, ours was 22 grand while the Pars was 25, the steelmen accepted the latter but the player refused to go tae them.

At the time a young teenage me voiced my concern at the clubs direction as did my fellow young Tims in the Wimpey trailer up in the Holy Village of Duntocher, my da though a wise oul Tim, he was only 41 at the time which was ould to me, calmed me down by saying that Jock knew what he was doing and we had probably told the player tae haud his wheesht as he would be wearing the hoops sooner rather than later, eventually motherwell accepted our lower bid of 22 grand, that player was Joe McGoals

    ………………………

Very fond memories of that time. While I started life as a Celtic supporter, I had a flirtation with Motherwell during my late years at Primary school and first year at High School. This was primarily due to two reasons. 1. My Dad who was a widower wouldn’t allow me to travel into Glasgow (Big Bad City) from The Brig on my own to see Celtic, and 2) Rangers were gubbed 5-2 at Ibrox in a Scottish Cup Quarter Final by Motherwell. The celebration when the result of that game was announced caused great celebrations in my household so I thought it was alright to go to Motherwell games which my Dad allowed although everyone in the house supported Celtic.

I attended the first leg of the 1965 Cup semi final at Hampden with a pal from St. Pat’s. Joe McBride put Motherwell in the lead twice only to be hauled back by Celtic. I was the only one in the Celtic End who was celebrating when Joe scored his goals. My pal tried to disown me! Celtic won the replay 3-0.

I attended the Final with the same pal supporting Celtic when we beat The Pars 3-2 in a helluva game.

In the close season Celtic wanted to sign Joe who was 27 (considered a veteran in those days). The bids were as you said between Dunfermline and Celtic with the Fifers ordering more. Joe did opt for Celtic but I seem to remember he had to put in an appeal citing his age for some reason or another and that the bid from Celtic for someone of his age was reasonable. Joe’s appeal was upheld. I loved the guy. He was my all time hero. When I was a headteacher two of his grand children attended my school. Joe brought the European Cup into the school to show off to the children. He was due to attend a CSC get together with Ronnie Simpson later in the evening up North. Joe and I toured all of the classrooms. This was in the 90’s and when we went into the Primary 1 classrooms, I thought they would be far too young to know about Joe, so I said to them that we had a very special visitor who has come to show us the European Cup. Everyone of them yelled out, “That’s Joe McBride!.” The parents in Bishopbriggs had certainly taught them their history. One of the best days of my life.

  5. JUSTSHATERED @ 7:36 PM,

    Totally agree…

It’s the way we always work though…

We sell Oh and then try to get a replacement

When we should have got Idah in first.

If Norwich City were playing hard ball we simply should have moved on to the next candidate

I’m sure our head of scouting has a list of potential players, we need to start bringing in players in a timely manner.

When the regime changed and Ange came in they followed a quite different blueprint but one ygat was successful for the PLC and the Club.

    Sums things up.

At this point we’ve changed our recruitment team two or three times but nothing has changed.

The only thing left to change is the Board. It is them that set the parameters that we work within and it is clearly not working. We are not, and haven’t been for a long time, progressing on the field.

  7. KINGLUBO – I may be an outlier, but I don’t agree with any of you sentiments. Quite the opposite – still on a high from seeing the bhoys stateside, and looking forward to the season opener at the weekend.

SAINT STIVS – more crap,we have had players signed in last couple of seasons, who weren’t up to our pace, but keep playing the man.

    ……….

Absolutely. Getting to know teammates. Taking part in drills, knowing your role within the team, when to attack when to defend, spotting when team mates make runs. This type of work is vital and Brendan would want all of his players to be involved during the close season. There is more to life as a footballer than staying match fit during the close season.

TOSB- Its all about the money for some,as in not paying what’s required to get players in that the manager wants, save a couple of weeks wages, World Class thinking, meanwhile the skint huns are bringing in 3 decent looking players from the Eridivise, asleep at the wheel again? It remains to be seen, but they always seem to get money from somewhere.

Even the most ardent Board Lovers on here….going into another new season, with Ralston, Welsh,Scales ,Taylor, getting games in the back 4 , seriously?

  12. without a google search i could not identify a single inbound new raners player.

they are wasting money bringing them in early, then again they did already offload 10 players. and do have a play cl qualification games.

  13. Ordinary Joe

What a pile of poo! How did Tony Docherty’s tactics work out when Celtic annihilated Dundee 7–1 at Parkhead. We did beat Dundee in the game you cite. Job done. We did beat Aberdeen in the SCSF. Job done. Teams are allowed to present a challenge to Celtic and give us a stern test. We have no divine right to walk over every team in the country.

You may have missed it but Idah and Bernardo were part of Brendan’s Plan B in the cup final. Plan A was going nowhere so Brendan brought those two guys on as subs. Idah was on the pitch for 11 minutes when he scored. Games are often won when guys seize the initiative a la Bernardo taking matters into his own hands, running half the length of the pitch and thundering a shot at the goal which the keeper can only parry into the path of the striker who accepts the chance gratefully and scores with aplomb.

    Gie’s all peace.

  14. We have completed pre season and raise the flag this weekend and have a far weaker squad than last season an injury to any of our key men as we witnessed last season puts is in trouble wither it be CCV Calmac or Kyogo.

  15. SAINT STIVS on 31ST JULY 2024 8:19 PM

do celtic have a much more different training drills set up than anyone else.

    ……….

I would think we have because we are the Scottish Champions and keep winning trophies. The rest of Scotland couldn’t cope with the drills of AngeBall and struggled with Brendan over his two periods in charge. Does that answer you question.

What’s the management structure at Celtic now?

I thought Mark Cooper was just brought in to do scouting, not as head.

I don’t know myself it would be good to know who’s responsible for what

  21. Chairbhoy,

Sorry, but to bring up the “Mc Ginn” thing again and throw away the Petrie stand on it,is unworthy of you.

We offered Hibs £2.5 million. No other bidders.Mc Ginn wanted the move.It went on for a couple of weeks, then Petrie lost it,and put a large interview to the SMSM,saying, that he was finished negotiating with Celtic, the price was now£4 million,no offers.Still no one else bidding.Neil Lennon,His boss at the time, agreed with the valuation.Celtic waited, and the rest is history.

    We all have our views.

My view is that to sell our backup centre forward without having another ready to come in, when the manager has said he wanted another two strikers is negligence.

To be starting the season with no back up left back is negligence considering this was the same situation in January after we loaned Bernabie.

To have no back up centre half when the manager doesn’t fancy the two we bought last year is negligence.

Sure things may alter in the next four weeks but we stand on the precipice of a third shocking transfer window.

If this continues then this Board will deserve every bit of vitriol coming their way.

    Absolutely correct.

I read this article before checking out CQN tonight.

    The headline is a lie.

Brendan Rodgers made a statement – someone twisted this statement to fit their own view and invented this headline.

    Poor stuff.

  28. Brendan Rogers on Sky saying he hopes to have new personal, ie players by the end of August ,seems it takes long to bring in players personally you don’t know who to believe, maybe it’s time someone on the Celtic Board should come out and tell the fans what to expect in this transfer window.
