Adrenaline pumping as play-offs return

542

We’ve been here several times before.  Our first venture into the Champions League play-off round was in 1998 against (then) Croatia Zagreb.  Zagreb were clearly the better team but while a 1-0 win in the home leg gave us hope we were outclassed in the return game.

The unforgettable tie against Ajax was next.  Celtic’s best away performance in this tournament saw us beat the Dutch champions 1-3 in Amsterdam.  Ajax were clearly caught cold and performed infinitely better at Celtic Park, winning 0-1, but Celtic shut up shop to deny them any real chance of progression.

Basel were unknown and un-fancied in 2002 but their movement in central midfield was too much for Celtic, although curiously they only managed to perform for 45 minutes in each game.  An away goal defeat blocked our route to the top competition.  MTK Budapest were professionally swept aside in 2003.

Who can forget Spartak Moscow?  Just as they had done against Ajax, Celtic did the hard work away in the first leg, returning with a 1-1 draw, but incredible dramas unfolded at Celtic Park.  Roman Pavluchenko levelled Scott McDonald’s opener but the Russian missed a first half penalty.  The game went to extra time and with minutes left a defender punched Scott Brown’s shot off the line.  Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink missed with the resulting spot kick setting up a memorable penalty competition.

Vennegoor of Hesselink and Pavluchenko both scored this time as brave efforts from Gary Caldwell, Derek Riordan and Maciej Zurawski, who almost certainly knew he would never kick another ball for Celtic, and a save by Artur Boruc, sent us through.  Naka proved that 12 yards is too close a dead ball distance for him.

A favourite Celtic Park memory?  You bet.

The adrenaline is pumping already.  Bring it on.

    No excuses for poor performances.

    This tie is a GIFT.

To just have to beat Helsingborgs over 2 legs to get into the CL group stages?

    A GIFT.

More than anything, the prestige of the cL, the money, the experience, the worldwide coverage – more than anything getting in there will truly bury the Huns.

Watch their attendances plummet when faced with a dreich tuesday in November against East Stirling or watching the Hoops take on the cream of the crop on tv.

Watch the sunny enthusiasm of those currently in denial evaporate as they swallow hard at the fixture list and dull years of Scottish Football league drudgery ahead.

Watch their children follow the glamour of the Champions League Hoops.

Watch them simmer in anguished permarage.

C’mon Celtic – our day has come. Finish them. Completely.

    Pub, here I come.

    Just noticed this on Wikipedia:

    – “Salute” (health), although “cin cin” is also common (onomatopoeia meaning the sound of clinking of glasses) (Italian)

    – “Tim-tim” (onomatopoeia meaning the sound of clinking of glasses) (Brazilian)

Think I’m gonna start using the Brazilian version…

You must have missed the Rangers on the UEFA site.

I have their results listed here

Interestingly, they seem to be getting heftily cuffed by teams with Saint in their names. Gordon Smith will not be amused.

Did he look like a hun or had he just been told his dug was deed?

  9. I have held the belief that Celtic are a much bigger club than Helsingborgs.

So could it true that H-borgs are in better financial health than Celtic?

The fact that they lost a striker ,and immediately went out an spent e1.7million on another, shows that they have been willing to invest ,and take a chance on CL football.

At the same time Celtic have had to sell Ki to balance the book’s a bit better’, and have not speculated.

All the signs are that we are not in as good financial health as the board spin doctors have led us to believe.

  17. Really looking forward to tonight’s game.

We have got a fortunate, but not an easy, draw. Swedish teams will always surprise clubs that are from countries that have a complacent attitude. Thankfully, Scottish clubs can rarely afford to take such a view, though some red top devourers and timbhoy2 might think differently.

If we qualify over two legs for a 7th crack at CL group stages, we will be continuing a period of 11 years from our 2001/02 initial appearance.

Compared to the 80s and 90s we are living in great times

  20. TBM @17.42,

I have been saying much the same since Saturday. I feel the more depressed because I had hoped for better from Ross County. They seem to be just another ict. What is worse, the likes of Craigan was lauding their kicking and blootering to the skies. I despair for Scottish football’s future. I had hoped that the MIBs would improve this season with thems deid but Thompson, reputedly our best, let them kick Celtic off the park, even denying us a stonewall penalty. It is open season on Celtic in the SPL. Adams will likely end up at the deid team.

They haven’t actually ‘signed’ Durdic. They have him on loan till January with an option to buy at the end of the loan period

Finnbogasson was the only consistent goalscoring striker in their squad hence the scramble to bring in a replacement
