Adrian Sproat and shutout records

767

An article on STV this week brought an old memory to mind.  Days before Rangers’ goalkeeper, Chris Woods, was set to break a Scottish shut-out record across all competitions he gave a media interview when he said, “I just hope when we do lose a goal it is not an important one”.

Woods duly broke the record in a Scottish Cup tie against Hamilton Accies but that game, 27 years ago last week, is not remembered for the achievements of Chris Woods, it’s remembered for the fact that Accies left back, Adrian Sproat, found himself in nosebleed territory as he thrashed the only goal of the game into the net.  Records count for nothing when you’re knocked out of the cup.

Fraser Forster has demonstrated remarkable concentration in recent games, when he has been called upon to make incredible saves after long periods of inactivity, but there are only so many times he’ll be able to pull off ‘save of the season’ acrobatics.  We need to protect him and close down space well away from the Celtic goal.

These records may matter little if they are recalled through an embarrassing defeat but, just consider how often and fondly we refer to the 25 league game winning run in season 2003-04.  History is always worth making.

Many thanks for everyone who for getting your seats confirmed for our CQteN St Patrick’s Day Dinner at the Kerrydale Suite on 14 March.  As we stand there are a few non-confirmed but from tomorrow we’ll be able to allocate seats to the waiting list.  Will let you know if we have space available soon.

The dinner is to raise funds to build a kitchen for Mary’s Meals at the Kholoni Primary School in Mchinji, Malawi, which has 1200 students and no catering facilities.  Children often are faced with the choice of working to eat of going to school.  With a kitchen in place this dependency will flip, those who go to school and get an education, will also get a meal – often their only reliable meal of the day.

Marys’ Meals perform minor miracles, feeding each child in Malawi for £7 per annum, while employing locals to work in the kitchens (which will be used as a classroom outside of meal times).  It will be a remarkable legacy to mark the first 10 years we’ve had out of CQN.

Two new badges will launch at the CQteN dinner to record the decade and raise funds for the Malawi kitchen.  The designs have now been approved (see here) and they are about to go into production.  If you would like to register interest, email Celticrollercoaster on cqnbadges@gmail.com

The means of having influence is changing and every supporter can avail themselves of it regardless of whichever group they choose to affiliate themselves with or indeed remain independent. We are using it now via CQN.

What is missing is a structure that captures the mood of the whole as opposed to that of the active.

Thus whilst the larger groups with affiliated members can claim to be representative of their grouping, they cannot claim to represent the whole.

This inevitably undermines any argument put forward which either furthers the interest of that group or even if an argument has wider benefit, reduces chances of acceptance because of perceptions held of its source, which seem to carry as much if not more weight than the argument itself.

The Open Meetings are an honest attempt to include groups and individuals, but as a mechanism it still falls short of the idealbbecause those attending will always be vastly outnumbered by those not able to or not bothered to attend.

The CST have for years tried to get this fragmentation addressed via the AGM resolution that has morphed from its original fan on the board genesis to looking at ways of improving communications, but has never managed to shake off its original thrust partly because Celtic always included that particular aspect in their response to the resolution keeping it fresh in folk’s minds.

However the need to address communications has been recognised and the SLO has invited individuals and groups to take part in a supporters forum which has the potential to create structures that reflect the ability of everyone, who is so inclined, to try and influence club policy.

It is not tacit acceptance on Celtic’s part of the CST Resolution as regards communication, but it is a step in the right direction to bring the support together as a cohesive voice.

“AS ONE of the sport’s eccentric characters, Hugh Sproat put fun back into football.

A milkman before joining Ayr United from Auchinleck Talbot in 1974, the goalkeeper often dribbled well out of his penalty area, and was known for heading the ball clear when he could easily have caught it.

He usually wore a red jersey, but changed to blue when facing Celtic and green against Rangers, a trend he continued after joining Motherwell in 1979. Legend has it that, just before a match at Parkhead, Celtic manager Jock Stein told him: “Take that jersey off, son – there’s enough loonies out there without you winding them up.”

He once took the field wearing a razor blade as an earring and, despite protesting: “But I’m a punk rocker,” was forced to remove it.

Sproat returned to Somerset Park in 1984. In 22 years, he made 189 appearances for Ayr and 145 for Motherwell. In 2005, Ayr fans voted him the club’s all-time cult hero.”

    Story of my life mate!!!

  15. traditionalist88 on

    This is from June 2007(RTE):

‘Celtic and Rangers are certain to switch from Scotland to the English premier league, according to Celtic director Dermot Desmond. Desmond, Celtic’s major shareholder, told Saturday’s Guardian newspaper: “I don’t know when it will happen, but to me it’s inevitable. Commercially it would work because the audiences would increase…from a football standpoint, would the premier league be better with Celtic and Rangers in it? I’d like to think so.”

The two clubs have won every Scottish championship since 1986, with Celtic winning the league as part of a treble last season. Desmond’s comments follow similar observations by Rangers chairman David Murray 24 hours previously. Murray, though, said the two clubs should still field teams, mostly made up of under-21 players, in the Scottish premier league.

“If other clubs are failing to grow at the same rate as Rangers and Celtic and feel they would be better without us then we would have to look at the merits of joining the Premiership,” Murray told the Rangers official website. Two weeks ago an English premier league spokesman denied reports that Celtic would join the competition.’

Clearly a lot has changed since then but…

    No probs mate.

Couldn’t make meeting last night, doing a rather boring job at the moment in North of England, long shifts and a lot of sitting about waiting on materials etc, hence my more active participation in some of the debates lately.

Got 2 tickets for satureday’s game and still don’t know if I can make it yet, the grandson is looking forward to it, he was at the last Aberdeen game and helped out with the Dam collection.

I thought we got out of jail that day and will need to be above average on sat to get a result.

  17. Auldheid, I take your point (previous thread) that the Board’s position re OB Bill is subjective.

You rightly point out that even though FoCUS is the Board’s creation and as FoCUS was almost a prerequisite for new football related crimes (OB Act) it was not impossible or contradictory for Celtic to back one and oppose the other.

Of course Celtic’s recorded JAG meetings, wher without demur, the OB Bill was discussed before Celtic made a half-hearted opposition to the Bill still do not prove they were backing the Bill.

But when there are no minutes or notes for these meetings where radical new laws were being discussed do you not begin to get a wee bit concerned that there is something to hide?

This was not a council sub committee considering the dispersal of grants (though even these have transcripts showing discussions, votes, proposers, seconders etc) this was a water shed moment in Scots Law!

Do you honestly believe our Board was for FoCUS and against the Bill as they now say?

In fact when they did their token opposition submission in August they said they were only told about OB Bill at a late stage when in fact they knew for months and had discussed at 2 JAG meetings.

This is not something that can be judged on these events and one has to look at the Board’s reaction to the abuses of power the OB Act has brought. Are they condemning it? Saying we told you so? Or are they up to their neck in it in trying to sort out our own supporters on the back of the police excesses the Act has brought?

Sadly, I missed the Aberdeen game that you’re referring to as a result of having to help with the counting of the money which was raised.

I think that Saturday is going to be a real challenge for us. Aberdeen are on the up, confidence will be high and in attack they have the potential to create our defence problems. McGinn’s movement and pace will draw our centre backs into the flanks and it’s essential that Izzy and Fisher, if he plays in the right back slot, provide cover to ensure that at least one of our centre halfs remains in the middle.

I’m really looking forward to it.

You get trust the same way that you eat an elephant, a bit at a time.

The lack of trust is not one sided and I would look at areas where reasons not to trust arose and what caused it.

I would try and develop a communication strategy everyone accepted the need for that covered things like:

I would for example not start from the position that I was being told lies but was hearing the truth as the other person saw it but question why they saw it as they did.

I would take exception to be being called a liar and would find it difficult to trust anyone who called me such, especially if I was sure my truth was right at the time so would not use the term.

I would get agreement on a common understanding of what dialogue means

I would also get agreement on what sort of issues were for sharing and the timing of that sharing. I think we have to recognise Celtic are a business and could be harmed as such if everything was put out there as it developed.

More than anything we need to agree what the ultimate goal of Celtic is.

For me that is to run a successful not for profit football team that is self sustaining and without which no other lesser goals, be the charitable, social or political would be possible.

Maybe with an agreed goal based on logic rather than emotion, everyone can start working towards it as opposed to ploughing their own road in directions that could undermine the main goal.

I think addressing issues like this would go a long way to restoring trust, but I’m a lot less certain any of the parties would welcome giving up anything to pull together but would be happy to be proved wrong.

I was very encouraged by Eddie’s reponse last night especially given his experience of how matters of communication were dealt with in days of yore.

I think we have to accept first of all that trust is lacking then find ways of building it the only way it can be -together.
