Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

  2. The Green Man,

Sad to say, I now think of the end of Animal Farm when I think of politicians.

It seems that once they have their snout in the trough, then being a politician and remaining in office with all its perks, becomes more important than the actual political beliefs for which they were elected.

As far as I can know, there is nothing the OBFA does that can’t be covered by existing legislation and I believe it should no longer exist.

    You could be right…

My heart is ruling my head after Saturday to a degree.

I do feel for Stokes inasmuch as he was marginalised to make space for vastly inferior players under Deila.

However his off field carry on is probably a big factor. He is also slow and lazy.

That said he did show an ability to Skelper Huns that many other players in the Hoops failed to demonstrate in the semi final

It’s a fine balance in the ‘is he worth the effort?’ Considerations. In part that will be answered by the alternatives Rodgers may attract.

  5. BRENDAN Rodgers will be officially unveiled as Celtic manager at Celtic Park this afternoon. And due to the unprecedented levels of interest over his appointment and the anticipated number of Celtic supporters expected at the stadium today, the Main Stand will be open from 3.30pm today for fans wanting to greet the new manager.

Fans can come along to Paradise today and enjoy a special Celtic event. Brendan Rodgers will have a press conference at the stadium at 4pm, which fans will be able to watch live on the big screens inside the stadium, before the new manager will be introduced to the Celtic fans inside the stadium at 6pm.

Parking is available in car parks at the Clyde Gateway and behind the Lisbon Lions Stand.

Paradise is the place to be today as Brendan Rodgers begins his reign as Celtic manager.

  6. Why on the BBC is it still the Level 5 keek still being peddled.. Why is Gordan Smith still referred to as ex SFA Chief Exec and his previous position with the Deady Bears not referred to?

More importantly why is their no reference to the same flies wanting to wallow up to their knees in my blood not getting a mention?

Hope the Scottish sports dept is the first to go when the licence fee disappears. British Biased Corporation.

    Sorry had visitors there.

No links I just noticed he had dropped his earlier criticism of Huns singing etc on his Sportscene appearance last night.

I have previously thought some Timternet criticism of the BBC was overstated and a bit paranoid, but their “reporting” of Saturday’s events is wildly skewed. There have been threats, or they have been got at I am sure.

  8. Makes perfect sense to move it inside the stadium.I think the response will be massive.Always a better sing song under a roof.Enjoy, everyone thats going.
