Adversarial statements, what to do with Anthony?

695

Yesterday’s Scottish Cup final was head and shoulders above the insipid FA Cup final at Wembley. Newco scored two excellent goals, including one from our ex-play, Kenny Miller. But it was our current, on-loan, player, Anthony Stokes who decided the encounter.

What should we do with Anthony? His attitude yesterday was magnificent. He decided he was leaving Hampden with a winners medal, and he had the skill, strength and capacity to ensure no one could stop him.

For the first goal he collected on the wing, made a beeline for goal before slotting the ball into the far corner, although he was assisted by the most generous defending since Jersey in June 1940. [Can you believe two defenders stood off him?] Scoring with a header from a corner when your team is a goal down with 10 minutes remaining takes character and determination.

Brendan Rodgers would have been impressed, but it remains to be seen if that attitude can be tapped into day-in, day-out at Lennoxtown.

I watched Motherwell fans invade the Fir Park pitch the Premiership Play-off final last year. On that occasion their actions went beyond mere celebrations, fans were deep into opposition territory, taunting Newco fans behind the goal. To their credit, Newco fans took it on the chin and left the stadium without retaliating.

I can’t imagine what possesses fans of a losing team to invade a field already populated by thousands of celebrating fans. Whatever it is, it’s primitive and unlikely to be a considered reaction. As a result, Newco will be dragged into a disciplinary situation which would otherwise only have effected Hibernian.

What’s worse, the one perennial get out of jail card football clubs often use when fans let them down: “We always criticise and warn fans about this sort of thing”, was fatally undermined by a hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle.

While every Hibernian person interviewed acknowledged the role of their fans and need for improvement, Newco issued an adversarial statement.  Compliant friends in the media were urged to drop the role of their fans on the field.  Adversarial statements create adversaries, football administrators know this.  Getting strategy wrong isn’t worth a few hours PR.

The blog is a happy place as the “malcontents” have heehaw to be malcontented about, Dermot getting Brendan has left the bored (sic) bashers nowhere to go…… The board bug me at times especially not backing up the fans or the way we are treated in the media, but hey ho, we are a stronger bunch when United and that annoys the life out of them all

  5. Listened to Hereford FC spokesperson this morning on BBC talking about their big game at Wembley. He explained how the original Hereford Utd was wound up and that Hereford FC was set up only two years ago. No talk of holding companies or any of that nonsense. The BBC congratulated Hereford FC for doing so well in only two years of existence in getting to Wembley.

Meanwhile when identical matters relate to a certain other Club, all must stick rigidly to acknowledging counter factual history as gospel.

Stokes wants to play when he feels like it in other games he is posted missing I would sell him and put the money towards Brendans transfer kitty. He in my opinion has had his day at Celtic and has only himself to blame for it. Bye Stokesie and dont let the door hit you on the back side on the way out. H.H.

  10. When players leave you hope it’s for the right reasons.

Stokes is a very good player who is a level of concentration away from being great.

Forrest has skill in abundance but lacks fitness and mental strength.

    EFe is like Stokes.

Allan is a very talented passer who has been successful with certain teams and systems.

In early development adjustment’s can correct issues.

It’s harder when that player see’s himself as an established footballer.

A fitting system can make a limited player into a very good one.

    Lennon being a prime example.

Di Maria was brilliant at Real terrible at Man utd but back to being great at PSG.

Brendan will have a system in mind and some players we like won’t suit while some we do not rate will shine.

    Interesting season ahead.

    Paul,

The hasty press release in the minutes after the final whistle should be condemned by everyone in football and possibly bring a charge by the authorities.

In the world we live in today of instant communication and smartphones releasing a statement stating that some of their players and officials were assaulted, whether true or not, so soon after the final whistle and while emotions and tempers were still very high gave licence to the not inconsiderable violent element in their support to retaliate in kind on the streets.

Confirmed reports of very large groups of rangers thugs in the city and east end out for blood Saturday night.

The line between the words in the sons they sing and their actions on the streets afterwards is a very fine one indeed.

A statement calling for calm to defuse the situation pending an investigation was what should have transpired.

i never expected getting Brendan Rodgers but it’s quite exciting we have got a manager who will manage plus I think he has www thing to prove to the Epl/Sky and English media, good times, in fact, even better times are acoming

I wonder how brendan will fare with our recruiting streams – £15 mil in the epl means something different to £15 mil in Glasgow. Totally trust he will adapt and find advice where he needs it. The match yesterday where new rangers were well beaten and should have been stuffed by hibs, showed exactly how dire our situation was this year, the team really did regress at a shocking rate.

  24. theglasgowcelticway on

The difference between Motherwell and yesterday is the Motherwell fans weren’t waving Irish tricolours or so a zombie on a Facebook blog I visited informed me. When I asked him what’s the problem with the tricolour I was told it represents Irish terrorism and the killing of British soldiers. Ok, why do Newco fans fly the Israeli flag at games because surely that is also a country born from conflict and the killing of British soldiers and is more recent in the history of the nations involved? No reply yet. Everyone knows why.

  25. kevinlasvegas on

Looking forward to tomorrow. Brendan certainly seems a character. You know I have a feeling he will have our media on there toes. He has that look that MON had when they tried to wind him up.
