Advertising Standards Authority step into Scottish football

669

I hear the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have written to complainants confirming they are investigating adverts run by Rangers International Football Club plc, in which they claim to be Scotland’s most successful football club.  You and I know that’s not the case, Celtic are Scotland’s most successful football club, followed at a distance by Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibs, Queens Park, Motherwell, Kilmarnock……. and ultimately East Fife.

The confusion has perhaps arisen following the demise of The Rangers Football Club plc, who laid claim to 54 Scottish titles before their failure to pay creditors ultimately led to liquidation.  Rangers International Football Club plc have traded for less than a year and would be pushed to justify their claim in the face of Celtic’s magnificent domestic and European history.  They cannot, of course, claim to be a now liquidated company.

The Advertising Standards Authority will write to both the advertiser and advert broadcaster asking them to submit evidence in support of their claim.  The ASA will then send a recommendation to the ASA Council for adjudication.

In the event the advertiser accepts the complaint and agrees to change future advertising claims the ASA will write to complainers to confirm the matter has been resolved.

Celtic’s claim is simple, we are the champions of Scotland, winners of more leagues and cups than anyone else still kicking a ball in Britain, Northern Europe’s first European Champions and we observe all football, tax and civil laws.

To put it in really simple terms as soon as our stadium was completed.

For the sake of argument lets say the extra 10k seats were used every game, at an average of £500 income per seat that £5M/season more income from the stadium alone.

I know that’s far too simple a picture but it’s one of the biggest factors.

    Frittered away… But where?

Like most of us I read about their downfall but I seemed to have missed where the money went… I’m sure if it was Celtic the MSM would be looking under every stone to find out.

    Yorkbhoy,

You ask a really good question. It also makes you wonder what the likes of Murray was taking out of the club through his various “franchised” services – not to mention the likes of Dave King who seemed to double his money for no apparent reason.

I suspect that we will never get to the bottom of it, primarily because nobody who matters is really trying to find…out and the vast majority of huns are just too stupid to demand answers.

  9. Good to hear the Advertising Authority are having a look at the RIFC wild claims P67

  10. yorkbhoy – 13:35 on 28 March, 2013

True – but let’s also factor into the overpriced and overpaid transfers they made in order to fool the hordes.

There’s something else that always nagged at me. Throughout the deathstar Murray’s companies took up advertising space. Was he 1)paying over the odds in a money shuffling exercise? 2) Getting it for free as it was his stadium or 3) filling in empty gaps that they couldn’t sell cause they’re toxic? Regardless it was less real income coming in that would have been lower than ours anyway based on an ‘eyes on the ad’ model.

It’s a ridiculous state of affairs that paul67’s article has cheered so many CQNers up today!

Despite the new rangers being a brand new club with no previous history being fact; no one in the MSM will ever state this, no rangers fan will ever admit it, and no one cares apart from us!

Clutching at straws. Next week or whenever sevco wins the third div, it will be reported as the clubs 55th title signalling the beginning of the end of the worst period in the clubs proud 140 year history.

I wouldn’t be surprised if those exact words are used.

Are things really so desparate there that they’d claim the third division as a “title”?

A serious question. Celtic and the ex rangers had roughly the same crowds, roughly the same TV income, they had more Euro money and they didn’t pay their taxes. How did they go bust… Where did the money go? Was it just outrageous transfers?
