Advertising Standards Authority step into Scottish football

669

I hear the Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) have written to complainants confirming they are investigating adverts run by Rangers International Football Club plc, in which they claim to be Scotland’s most successful football club.  You and I know that’s not the case, Celtic are Scotland’s most successful football club, followed at a distance by Aberdeen, Dundee United, Hearts, Hibs, Queens Park, Motherwell, Kilmarnock……. and ultimately East Fife.

The confusion has perhaps arisen following the demise of The Rangers Football Club plc, who laid claim to 54 Scottish titles before their failure to pay creditors ultimately led to liquidation.  Rangers International Football Club plc have traded for less than a year and would be pushed to justify their claim in the face of Celtic’s magnificent domestic and European history.  They cannot, of course, claim to be a now liquidated company.

The Advertising Standards Authority will write to both the advertiser and advert broadcaster asking them to submit evidence in support of their claim.  The ASA will then send a recommendation to the ASA Council for adjudication.

In the event the advertiser accepts the complaint and agrees to change future advertising claims the ASA will write to complainers to confirm the matter has been resolved.

Celtic’s claim is simple, we are the champions of Scotland, winners of more leagues and cups than anyone else still kicking a ball in Britain, Northern Europe’s first European Champions and we observe all football, tax and civil laws.

  1. Not posted in many moons.

I’m not sure if it has been posted already but Hearts v Ross County is live on ESPN at lunchtime on Saturday 6 April and the Huns play QP at Hampden on Sun 7 April live on Sky.

If we can win the league v Hibs will they seek to move our match to another date (and in doing so reduce the impact of the demo)?

Doesn’t look as there is an option for an early kick off on Sat or Sun and the following Tues/Wed/Thu are European nights. Mon night is possible but the Manchester Derby is scheduled that night and SKY may be reluctant.

We may have a fixture pickle ahead and I expect the authorities would like to reduce the size of the demo.

  2. Murray bought the deid Rangers for £6 million quid from Lawrence Marlborough. Didn’t he get over that figure in EBTs? How did that work? Does that mean he never paid a red cent and that actually he did make a £1 profit when he sold to Craigy Boy?

  3. Raymac

He never even bought Rangers. He borrowed £6m from the BoS and never paid it back!

SPL, if there is one next season, will start on August 3. Celtic have opted out of game on Aug 10.

  9. Potentially 3 CL qualifying games before the league begins. Summer football, or a league starting early July would give us a better chance of reaching group stage.

  12. I’ve pulled this discussion over from KDS because I think it is a summary of where we now are in terms of uniting Celtic against those forces that voted through and are rigorously applying a flawed law, so flawed you really must question why it ever reached the statute book if not to cause the discord in Scottish football predicted. when it was being framed. (framed being the operative word) [I come in at the end]

Celtic continue to mention this new Working Group that his apparently been set up for the fans, as they do so they back it up by providing the e-mail address for FAC.

I’m not aware of this Working Group even being established yet, as far as I know all fan orgs gave it a wide berth. FAC certainly has no association with it.

Mac bhoy I’ve been a staunch supporter of the GB but now is the time for the fans and club to unite and if that means swallowing your pride and offering an olive branch to the club then so be it. It seems to me that PL and the board have effed up big time over this issue but the way forward is dialogue and contrition on both sides. If we carry on as we are then we’re heading for disaster and division, it has to be nipped in the bud now and that means the GB having the balls to admit mistakes on their part, the Board the same, and both having the courage and goodwill to get round the table to sort it out!

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    mac_bhoy28 Mar 2013,

At this moment in time we have zero faith in the club, there is no trust there whatsoever. In the past, despite plenty going on which we had good reason to be upset about, we did our utmost to maintain a working relationship and hold an element of trust regarding certain things. Sadly I think its escalated too far. The club actively collude with the police against our members and even mistreat us/our members off of their own back regardless of the police.

I think it says a lot more that the likes of the CSA and Trust have no time for this ‘working group’ either though, especially the CSA. I think most who have had even just a brief overview of this sorry charade would have very little trust/faith in the club to be honest and who can blame them?

Even as I type the club are pursuing their civil banning orders against some of our members – it makes me sick.

    +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

    Auldheid/Auldyin

Looking from afar perhaps had Celtic been dealing with the support groups as a whole as opposed to individually, this might never have reached the present level of anger and mistrust.

But whilst that anger is understandable, what alternative is there but to start working together and to actually agree on something that will be an indicator that something that was agreed will actually happen?

Trust can be rebuilt in baby steps at first on common ground (once that has been identified) but working together is the only way forward.

Celtic’s have resisted in the past CST resolutions asking to explore better ways of working together and this is what happens when folk are not in tune and singing from different hymn sheets.

It seems to me that in getting Celtic to set up a working party, you have made a significant contribution to bringing everyone to the table.

It seems folly to me to throw that all away by not getting around that table and coming up with a better way forward than currently exists.

Give it a bit of time for feelings to cool then get working – together against those external to Celtic who have created the conditions for discord.

Call me pedantic but the statement would be much more effective if written obeying simple rules of punctuation and sentence construction.

    As in:

‘Celtic’s claim is simple. We are the champions of Scotland: winners of more leagues and cups than anyone else (other team) still kicking a ball in Britain; Northern Europe’s first European Champions; and we observe all football, tax and civil laws.’

My one may not be correct – I’ve put my head on the block with the colons and semi colons – but one thing is for sure: Paul’s version on a t-shirt would deserve ridicule on a child’s punctuation basis.

Sorry. There are far more eloquent, clever and knowledgeable people than me writing on this board – but the effect of their writing is ruined for me by the breaking of the simple rules of written English.

Wish I hadn’t started now and was just about to delete, but ach, I’ve written it now.

It would be a great help to those of us of simple minds , for one of our legal eagles to list the multifarious forms of existence of ‘RANGERS’ ,along with a brief attachment of the rights and responsibilities of each one. This could then be sent to S.F.A.,S.P.L. and those parts of the Scottish media who are having difficulty making the necessary distinctions.

  24. auldheid and people like him are well meaning and very methodical in exposing all of this farce and corruption and normally it would be enough to right the wrongs of lying and cheating, and as much as i admire their tenacity, can they not accept that no matter how logical [spock] their reasoning it does not matter one bit, for godsake our own club accept
