After PSG, conceding 5, 6 and 7 needs to stop

299

After the two drubbings  at the hand of Paris St Germain, I read how they were among the best teams ever to visit Celtic Park.  In the next round of the Champions League they lost home and away to Real Madrid (currently 15 points off the pace in La Liga).  The truth is, we flattered the French champions-elect.

PSG are not on the level of any of the Barcelona teams we have faced in recent years, or the Milan or Juventus teams who eliminated us from the Champions League knock out stages.  They have abundant talent, but this is not a team who should be beating us 0-5 and 7-1.

The Milan team we faced in 2007, who were on their way to winning the Champions League, contained Maldini, Gattuso, Seedorf, Pirlo, Inzaghi, Ambrosini and Kaka.  Celtic held them to two 0-0s over 90 minutes, with Telfer, McManus, O’Dea, Naylor and Sno in the side, none of whom would get into the current side.

Truth is, we have better players than at any point under Gordon Strachan and Neil Lennon.  The current crop have and will continue to achieve more domestically than their predecessors, but we cannot go toe-to-toe with Europe’s moneyed elite any more than Morton can at Celtic Park.

This season’s Champions League group was a five defeat and one win success.  We eliminated a higher seed – progress in anyone’s book.  But conceding five, six and seven goals needs to stop.  Defending against overwhelming talent is an art.  Let’s learn it.

Not a lot to disagree with on your points

    But :-)

Celtic could have put much to bed very early in Sevco’s life, by simply ” welcoming the new team to our leagues, and even welcoming them to their first visit to our stadium when we played them for the first time”

On RD – got to disagree with a lot here, he was out his depth from very early on – in my view it was a major downsizing exercise by our club, to control costs withthe liquidation of that old club

We should have shown courage and continued to drive growth in other ways ( how many players did we try in his reign ? And not all his choices I believe

WiTS got this early with his Ronny ooot campaign :-))))

    Good evening all,

I feel compelled to end my self imposed exile to respond to some posters as my original post on Jjs site under beppe has provoked some (much needed) debate and exchange of view points on how Celtic should handle the current complexities of life as the biggest Scottish football club and how to respond to the governing bodies lack of oversite in general.

Before I begin please let me state the following,,,

    I’m not a hun

I’m not trying to tell anyone what to do here, nor would I.

I state only my own opinion and if you don’t agree fine by me but please don’t tell me I’m wrong as your own opinion can’t be wrong, it’s just an opinion.

I’ve been polite so please afford me the same courtesy should you choose to respond.

    Jimtim 2.42 you posted

God Bobby that just shows the stacked deck we are up against. What chance do we have.

Would you care to elaborate. I hope it’s the cheating you’re referring to as a stacked deck or am I and my stance the stacked deck?

    Bigbhoy 4.22

I found your post eloquent but Im sorry i couldn’t disagree more. That viewpoint is what is holding us back in my humble opinion. Seems to me you’re saying weve no choice but to put up with our bedmates but we have the money to win this league so that’s what we are going to do. Let’s just keep showing up.

Anyway I don’t know how to bold but I shall respond to your points,,,

A Lot of posters on here are under a misapprehension that because they are the biggest club in Scotland, then we have the biggest say in the running of the game.

Celtic have for years and decades been sidelined in the management of Scottish Football. We only have one vote. I have been informed that at SFA and SPFL meetings we often find ourselves in a minority and seldom attract support for our initiatives. We are the largest and most commercially successful club by far and in votes often only attract support from 2 or 3 clubs.

In the SFA it is worse with the chairman being from Cove Rangers, we are continually ignored and voted down. The only area where we attract any support is for financial matters. My father used to say, that there are only 2 types of supporters, Celtic fans and anti-Celtic fans.

Yes you are correct that we are just one vote of many , and tbh that’s only fair and I’m fine with that, but you have failed to mention the financial vote in which we are actually the strongest vote. By that I mean imagine the club letting other clubs know at board level “you stymie us in our efforts for reform and don’t expect our fans to visit your grounds and help prop you up. We shall be asking the CSA and the Celtic blogs to ask all members not to attend your ground and we will be leaking the minutes of the meeting to let everyone know exactly why”. I’ve no doubt others budget for our fans visits,,,wouldn’t losing that half million or so focus some minds and maybe put down a marker to others we aren’t putting up with crap anymore!?

We are way more than just a vote if we want to be.

W.e have explored the option of looking to leave the league but Atlantic league, EPL and European League have all came to nothing. We are aware that there is a bias against Celtic in the Scottish Football games and other clubs have condoned the cheating of Rangers and of Sevco and still do so.

I’m sorry but unless you can produce any evidence I refuse to believe that we have tried to leave. Yes Dermot wanted us in England and they voted it down. I don’t see that as trying to leave,,I see that as Dermot trying to acheive his goal of having us in the epl.

If we were genuinely trying to leave then it wouldn’t have stopped there, the epl would just have been the first port of call,,,not the be all and end all.

If we were trying to leave,,really trying to leave,,we would have approached others after that knock back.

I think any smaller league within reasonable travelling distance would jump at the chance if it was legally approved. Off the top of my head some leagues that I feel would accept us as we would raise their profile and bring more bucks to the table,,,league of Ireland,,Danish superleague,,,MLS,,,Eliteserien (Danish league),,Belgian first division.

Arming yourself with the results of a judicial review which shows your current league cheated (or other evidence of that bias you reference) might just tip the hand of EUFA for special dispensation to move . Why haven’t they tried this if they want to move. And if the financials keep going up as they are currently why would the board act to move?

Celtic have continually improved our place in the European game because this is our only avenue where we can get out of Scotland. The ECA and friendships the Board has built with Barcelona and Bayern will serve us well.

We have went from being contenders the late 60s and early 70s to being group fodder these days so how exactly have we improved our place? 10 years ago we were doing better than today. Sorry can’t agree with that. As for the ECA and friendships what good are they? The biggest sporting scam in British history is taking place right now, we are the victims, so what have our friends done to help us? Zip.

Were there to be European Leagues now then we would be the only club in Scotland invited on board.

If they were taking the biggest clubs from smaller leagues then of course they get an invite. Why wouldn’t they? The sfa, Dallas and the other cronies employed by eufa, all the media including the BBC and sky, the Freemasons, and probably the cops would pull every single dirty trick they know to get that invite.

And as eufa don’t give a flying or recognise them as the scum they are they would have no qualms whatsoever in bringing them along.

I don’t understand why people say Celtic are condoning the Treatment of Rangers cheating, there is no evidence that the Board have done so.

But there is a mountain of evidence they cheated so if they were going to say something they would have. If you don’t complain about cheating you know is going on are you not actively helping it? Well you are in my book.

I rather think they have continually complained about the cheating and the RES 12 chaps were surprised when the club shared their correspondence with them.

This I believe is accurate,,the Res 12 crew ( much respect ) were shown letters and were surprised. But if they have continually complained as you think they have , and it gets ignored then what? Like I typed earlier, tell us who ignored us and we shall not darken their midden and help prop them up.

Expose the evidence worldwide,,,get those friendly clubs you mentioned earlier we are close with to put pressure on eufa to act.

Don’t show up for a champs league game (fans that is) and announce the reason why before hand to focus the world’s press into actually asking some questions.

Remember MON took his complaints about sectarian abuse to a eufa press conference and it raised some eyebrows. Take a page out of that book for starters. Do not accept being ignored,,fight tooth and nail for what is right is the Celtic way.

We have few friends in the media, as well as few in the governing bodies and we don’t go leaking stories to the media because they are just spun against you.

We do leak stories to the media though compared to others very rarely I believe and the very blog we are conversing on has been used in the past in such a way.

I would admit we dont seem savvy at all when it comes to media,,something that has pee’d me off for a long time.

We should have cultivated some media friends outside of Scotland a long time ago imo

This is another area I think the current custodians fail in.

We were called Paranoid when we claimed the SFA/SPFL, Referees and the Media were all pro-Rangers and anti Celtic. From where I sit, then the case is proven.

That’s kinda my point ,,we know we were and are being cheated. What are we going to do about it is the big question.

To do what Derry City and Belfast Celtic did is not an option for Celtic.

It was in the past when ordered to take down the tricolour remember? What has changed ? Where’s that spirit when we need it?

All options should be on the table. Discount nothing. There’s no rules in love or war remember. Showing up for a scam isn’t for me. If your enemy knows you need them (and that’s what you are saying above, we need you because we can’t die and we can’t move) then they have the upper hand in any negotiations and why would their be any change at all in that situation.

We need to strive against the injustice, and at the same time, create the top team and beat them all on the park.

We need to take part in the scam,,ahh, no actually we dont. Every single one of us could occupy our weekends with a different pastime . For the last two odd years I have. Agree we need to strive against injustice fullheartedly. And through Mary’s meals and the cqn schools in Malawi we continue to do so and I’m proud of that indeed.

.Our latest commercials have out turnover as big as the rest of the Premiership teams put together and this commercial success is the only place where we have an advantage.

No it’s not,,the away fans are vital to some clubs. They need them. There’s an advantage right there.

Celtic supporters really support our team, in all ways.

Speak for yourself. Like I said earlier I’m no longer interested in the team on the park and nor will I be untill I feel it’s a game I can genuinely commit to in the knowledge I’m not being taken advantage of financially or emotionally.

I can count the games I’ve seen in the last 2 years ( I can’t attend so TV only) on my fingers. Honestly.

I will support the causes and charities and always will I believe.

Lets concentrate on beating the uber-cheats on Sunday and push on to another Treble.

Me,,I’d much prefer it if you concentrated on how to fix a broken system than if we will beat cheating scum. I won’t be watching that’s for sure.

I should also point out that another reason I refuse to go along with a corrupt sport is because I’m about to have a wee one and I don’t want her imitating her father and getting addicted to a scam.

My father ( god bless your soul da) got me addicted. He didn’t know it would become a farce or I’ve no doubt he wouldn’t have done it.

So if you must attend because of habit or love of the club or whatever,,,I would ask you not to get the next generation addicted to a corrupt rigged scam that just wants your money while trampling on sporting fair play and despises what you stand for and who you are.

Leave the kids at home please so they don’t find themselves like me,, shaking their head and having to walk away hurting from something that has been a huge part of my life.

One other thing our board should have done

Give Sevco the same number of tickets for our Ground as any other FtSPFL clubs get

That would have made a clear statement and point to our own fans

I read your post on the JJ site and I agree with you, Bigbhoy wrote a very good post earlier but like you I disagreed with it.

I am in the what’s the point camp, it’s not sport so what’s the point, I would rather we gave up that condone the cheating and the corruption, cos by our silence that;s what we are doing, aye we are a lone voice, but a lone voice is a voice, if Celtic were to speak out the world would listen, I don’t hold with we will be ridiculed, it’s garbage, the powers outwith sectarian land would have to listen, they would have no choice.
