Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

Well, there’s always tomorrow. Unfortunately can’t make AGM so junior doing the biz for me…

Lurking on FF is bad for your ribs. Mine are sore from laughing.

“Celtic won the Commonwealth Games.” Honestly!

The intensity of their jealousy and hatred is what makes our victories all the sweeter.

I’m looking forward to QE2 opening the Games at CP. The Berrz will be growlin’ that day.

Oh it’s great to be a Tim.

I don’t know about shopping in the bazaar but some of our signings have certainly been bizarre!

  6. Sevco5088 is alive and well. This company paid D&P £5m for Rangers assets when club died. Whyte & Earley are 2 of the 3 named directors…

Hope you are well. Was it a traditional replacement or a Birmingham op.

I got a Birmingham in August. Worst bit is having to sleep on your back for 6 weeks.

I tend to agree with that sentiment.

I.E. it’s in Tony’s hands to apply himself…………………However, part of me thinks that had he been retained at home,a fitness and attendance to training regime implemented.then his progress or lack of it would be evident without input from a third party.

To an extent I think we have abdicated responsibility for this boy,who knows were he included in the team each week that could be the added incentive he needs as in my view he is better than anything we have on offer right now to partner Stokes.

No problems,we’ll be at Celtic park around 9.45 to 10.00am. Depends how long it takes to drink a coffee.

  11. Can someone please explain(in plain English), what the withdrawing the dissolution

    Request for sevco 5088 means?

    Thanks in advance.

“What time are we all meeting tomorrow at the agm in support of the resolution”

    The AGM starts at 10:30am

I believe people are gathering in the CSC in London road before the AGM.

I have to speak with Computershare regarding Proxy votes before the AGM and I will drink until after the AGM, so I wont be going to the CSC,

The AGM will end around 1pm. Billy No’Well will be on around 2:30pm in the Phoenix, Gallowgate. All Celtic supporters are welcome. Please pass the word round.

  13. BigNan,

I was catching up,as usual, this morning (Thai time) and read/listened to your petition, then posted it and my comment to my family and friends working abroad. Scrolling onwards I saw much the same already posted on here .CQN has got too big for me, I don’t want people to be split up as to their views as SFTB once suggested but maybe Paul could section it up into football, cooking (ie cheese on toast),politics, history, religion etc.,lol Just back in and thought I must still acknowledge your achievements so far.

I think you will have done Scotland proud if (a big one) this gets through. Even those, the decent ones, being targeted should realise this is for the better.

    Well done

    tusker .

    My comment -:

From the look of and listening to that panel (dissapointed in the lack of input from the woman),not a chance of meaningful progression.

I would go along with Mr Minogue as I wouldn’t think this was the time for nit picking but rather is it a valid, fair proposition! The panelist

who declared his non membership that thought the oaths/punishment trivial as never acted upon (how could he possibly know this, past or present) as he looked sideways for approval. He also had a dim view of Norway’s governance, why?? Mr Salmond seems to have a different opinion for an independent Scotland (regarding oil, only?)

This was in regards to the “chaos” it would cause in Scotland but has not in Norway.

The panel didn’t seem to consider the justification, the peoples right to know! Rather – unnessesary in “Bonny Scotland” and putting up road blocks.

Maybe Mr Minogue should first have asked the other panel members to declare their affiliations.

    Hope I’m wrong!

You got in touch with one of my sons, a good socialist (stood in the NE once) now in Glasgow, new job. Keep in touch.

As to the surname, my father was county Carlow, read in my village library,it’s not the obvious animal connection but from Scandinavian first name which is common in the Islands.

Taking this opportunity to thank you for your friendship and help when I was in London with my Thai son in the summer, I hope he has kept in touch?

Thanks to all who put in the hard work to get it this far.

I think Morrisey 23rd said something about financial support being sought.

I am happy to donate a few quid if he has a method of receiving it online.”

Thank you and everyone else who has supported this resolution in all the different ways people have done that. We are some team!

The donations I wrote about are to cover the costs of booking Billy No’Well. I plan to ask for donations in The Phoenix by those who attend. I suspect (hope) I raise enough to cover costs. I think this will be a popular event, so this shouldn’t be an issue *fingers crossed*

Never been a QE 1 of Scotland.

Never been a QE 1 of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

C Green “shafted” Craig Whyte after picking up the deadclubs assets for £5m.

They were in Sevco 5088 Green started Sevco scotland and told the world and those zombies in the after life that Sevco 5088 was no more and had no claim on any newco assets.

CW obviously disagreed, although a few people tried through companys House to have it officially written of through a dissolution process (i.e. deed, gone no claim on anything).

It appears that on monday 12th that dissolution process was halted and today companies House announced thay Sevco 5088 is alive and well with only two directors

Craig Whyte & Aiden Early with CG no longer anything to do with them, Thus leaving CW with the help of the worthing group to claim ownership of the assets that led to TRFC being set up .(i think:)))) )

  21. What’s the chances after all the £2m+ strikers we have brought to the club trying to find a regular goal scorer that a guy costing next to nothing turns into henrik 2 ……… We are due a number 7 HH

  22. I’m getting awful flak from me man city mate in work about signing someone for hundreds of thousands. it must seem like pub league stuff to a club who have limitless funds available to them. I was hoping the sky bassa bubble would burst at some stage but along comes BT with even more money – not much chance of BT turning into a setanta – strangely, I’m proud to follow a club scuttling about for scraps.

  26. It would be a crying shame if Tony Watt fell by the wayside.

A young man blessed with pace and skill and with goals in him.

I would like to think that Celtic would always go the extra yard for a talent.

Jinky drove Mister Stein crazy with his antics which would never be tolerated now but somehow it was made to work.

Yet George Connelly, a genius, did go his own tragic way.

Bigger talents than Tony have come and gone but I’d like to see him back in The Hoops before long.
