Agility in the football market

990

When you’re shopping in a sellers’ market, agility is the only way to survive.  You need contacts, sufficient coverage to trawl outlying corners of the bazar, and enough experience to ensure you don’t get burned.

If you’re trying to buy Champions League-calibre players for £100k you’re shopping in a serious sellers’ market but there is good strategy behind the deal Celtic have struck with Icelandic club, Fram, for the signature of 20-year-old striker, Holmbert Aron Fridjonsson.

Holmbert may or may not be the next Ibrahimavic, experience suggests you’ve got to kiss a lot of frogs in this game to find the one you’re looking for, but if Celtic are to bring a player to Glasgow who is capable of hitting the top, we’ll have to get him before the hundred-or-so other clubs floating around the wealthy leagues of Europe, which means we shop early.

We can afford to sign a few at £100k in an effort to fill just one place in the team.  The argument could also be made that our more expensive players have only a marginally higher success rate than those signed for six figures or less.

Thanks for the big response to the launch of the second edition of the CQN Annual [which is now shipping]yesterday, as well as CQN Magazine, and the ‘10’ event, which the occupants of the comments section are being given a head start on.

If you are on or near South Uist tomorrow make sure you take in the Hebridean cultural event of the year, when Alex O’Henley has a book signing of his biography of Celtic great, Malky MacDonald at the Dark Island Hotel from 1-2pm, before a Q&A at the Polochar Inn, from 7-8:30pm.

Not only does the book chart the life and achievements of a pre-war Celtic great, it does so in two languages (English when read one way, flip the other way for Gaelic).  It’s a great work, available from the Islands Book Trust.

  1. Funny thing Ole Lizzy QE2 coming to Celtic Park and sending the Bears in to a fit of apoplexy. Time was it would have had me beeling to. In some ways I am indifferent to it however it’s not that I no longer care it’s that I am rapidly losing the will to fight every battle and rant every rant that needs ranted. And a large part of me does think it’s funny that we are gaining a fair bit in the environs of Celtic Park as a result of the games and all that jazz………. and of course if it winds up the Sevconians then who am I not to indulge myself. Yet my cognitive dissonance senses are in overdrive…….

So here is my token protest at the queens visit to CP – I am a republican, I am a socialist and I object to monarchy. No person should be in possession of land, wealth, houses, title and status because they were born in to it and we should play no part in the honouring of her or what she and the Commonwealth she fronts up represent. Her story and that of her throne is an insult to me and everyone else who has to work for a living. So too is the fawning admiration and gushing bull plop that surrounds every bit of coverage of this ‘hard working’ monarch.

In the mean time I’ve more immediate and realistic fish to fry. Or curry to make to be more precise. I’ll be nowhere near the C’wealth games and hope only that they look after my beloved Celtic Park and that the once conquered nations hump their erstwhile imperial masters at every event.

Up the Republic! (Of Scotland, of England, of Wales…….)

Still hopeful he can make it.

How can you have the second Liz, when the first one’s never been?

    As Hamish Imlach wrote.

Never been a QE 1 of Scotland.

Never been a QE 1 of The United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland.

So QE 2 is an imposter……….a bit like a footlball club playing in the lower leagues of Scotland.

Spare the old dear a thought, she might have to use her own passport to get up to her holiday home at Balmoral after the referendum……. did anyone think that through yet?

Can a foreign monarch with her foreign security forces holiday on foreign soil without permission from the host nation? Will she also have to surrender ‘her’ land back to the occupied nation her forbears nicked it off?

  9. Are we in the qualifying rounds for teh Commonwealths or do we get in as a Host Club? If so what chances of a Glasgow Derby against Queens Park?

Exciting times ahead for Glasgow indeed.

And what of Tony Watt? Have there been revelations about the bhoy? I suspect Mr Lennon tried to remove him from the Glasgow goldfih bowl of temptation by sending him to Belgium. Has it not worked?

I see his name mentioned but missed why we are talking about him?

He deserves our support and a chance to succeed but he has to want to do it. Youth. Wasted on them so it is.

Sean Fallon said that whenever he emptied some poor, unfortunate opponent…he wouldn’t go near the player that he had just left lying in a crumpled heap,on the ground, instead he would walk over to the referee and apologise to him.

Apparently the referees loved Sean because he was tough, but never dirty. His challenges were honest and fair, and he never set out to deliberately injure an opposition player.

  13. Right, offski. Dinner and then yet more meetings about meetings. We pencilled in the start of the revolution for tonight but we had to put it back for a Committee meeting instead where we will decide that the AGM is the best place to put forward a resolution to Congress demanding the immediate withdrawal of all labour until such time as there is fair and equitable distribution of wealth or until the quality of grub on offer at our meetings is improved – whichever comes sooner. I wait with baited breath the agreement of the minutes and of course, matter arising – AOB can wait. For once it isn’t clashing with a Celtic game.

  15. Tusker, thanks for the comments and yes it will be a hard road to get this petition past first base, especially as the main documents in support of my petition were a/ The Domstol rules from Norway which were overlooked in the e-mail that was recieved, and, b/ The Social Security Commissioner’s Dundee Appeal ruling, which SPICe didn’t include.

The SPICe team (Scottish Parliament Information Centre) did however manage to include a whole list of stuff that supported Grand Lodge’s TEN PAGE submission which was in effect a counter petition based on Jack Straw’s capitulation to UGLE with an election looming.

Of course I ain’t taking this lying down and want the PPC to consider these documents and write to the sources, Domstol and DHSS.

    Will keep you posted.

Ticketus will have a floating charge on whoever/whatever owns the bricks ………and everybody else got their erases felt in IPO

If you want to play your footie at the bigot dome then Craigie boy will eventually get a piece of the action weather the bowling club committee at Hampden like it or not.

    Alastair,

I Don’t know if you were around at the time when the QE2 was launched.

There was much speculation as to what the ship would be called.

There was also speculative controversy on the possibility of it being named Queen Elizabeth 11.

I worked on the building of it, so I was present at the launch.

There was great expectation as to what name she would come out with; and when she said the words,” I name this ship, Queen Elizabeth 2, there wad a noticeable pause, as the bystanders computed this information.

This lasted till one of the bowler hats remembered to start a rousing, obligatory cheer.

The explanation given was that it was named to represent the second monarch called Elizabeth, but as the second ship to bear the name Queen Elizabeth : hence 2 rather than 11.

When I left school I done a YTS with a small local TV and aerial erectors (cause ye couldn’t get a job due to Maggie, and certainly not an apprenticeship due to, well…. St School)

Anyway, one morning we were allocated a job in Ardrossan. I always wore my Celtic scarf, so whilst wee Gordon was up on the roof (Bungalow) I was at the bottom of the ladder, the wee auld fellow came out the house and he said “Is that your team son” I said yes “Come on in and see this” He took me into his hallway and showed me an old black and white picture, “That’s me there” was a picture of a Scotland team, with Winston Churchill shaking hands with the team.

Never really elaborated at all, just asked if I went to games and said he had played with Celtic, a very humble wee man.

I’ve got to say that I’d not heard of him, but looked him up in books when I got home and thought wow ive just spoken to him,

    Malcom MacDonald

My mothers step father played for Preston North End, Bobby Beattie… I asked him about him and said he was a smashing player.

Bobby was a humble wee guy too…never spoke to much about his career.

Look him up, he was something else.

Played with Tom Finney, Bill Shankly, Tommy Docherty

Something about old players that young Tony Watt and the like could learn from.

One thing for sure he has one or two games before the experts on here declare him a dud. No pressure.

  26. I have been exchanging emails with the Dutch Embassy re the events in Amsterdam.

Here is what I received from them –

    Dear Sir,

Our apologies for not having replied sooner. Regarding the arrest of Celtic fans in Amsterdam, the Embassy has received the following briefing from the Public Prosecution Service in Amsterdam:

18 Celtic fans were arrested by Dutch police in Amsterdam on Wednesday 6 November, following disturbances ahead of the Champions League football game between Celtic and Ajax. 12 were later released after paying fines of up to 500 euros for public disorder. The remaining six appeared in court, charged with acts of violence against police officers in a public area. They will be brought to trial before a judge on 21 November. Four of the six have been released pending the trial. The remaining two will remain in custody until that date. Some video footage and photographic material of the disturbances has been provided to the Public Prosecution Service, which they are now examining. The Dutch police are also conducting an internal review of the incident.

For press enquiries, contact the Press Department of the Amsterdam Public Prosecution Service on 0031 88 699 1202 / pers.amsterdam@om.nl.

    Yours sincerely,

Good to see I’d sign this kid, we should buy more like that, get them early rather than have to spend the money that was talked about for Finboggeson etc. We should be trying to get Scandinavians and other Europeans ahead of Ajax and the like.

We should continue with wee Jordan Larsson.

  32. I see a few having a dig at our 19 year old player who is out on loan, the kid is 19 Ffs, get a grip, Celtic Supporters? I’ll tell you what, I wouldent like to be wounded in a fox hole with some of the tough guys in here, shocking, and bang out of order in my opinion, this kid scored a goal that arguably gave us one of the best nights at Celtic Park, and will be talked about for decades to come, I only hope that in those decades, people will say WHY.? It’s horrible, it’s shocking, it’s Hun like, to reach out a hand for this kid should be a given, to shun him, and dump him, and name call him, and make presumptions on a 19 year old boy beggars believe, or then again maybe I should not be worthy of the people who post in here, that never made a mistake in there life, or even more so when they where 19, I know I made many at that age, but I would make many more if I could just put on that Celtic shirt and score the winning goal against they greatest football in the world for my club, sounds easy eh? I wish.
