AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

  1. Livibhoy has written a feature for CQN Magazine about his first trip on his own to a Celtic match as a 14 year old back in 1992. He certainly had an eventful day! It is a brilliant read from one of CQNs best writers.

THE WINDS OF CHANGE has arrived! Spent two hours unloading them from a lorry in the rain!

If you enjoyed Caesar & The Assassin you will want to read the follow up and it is quite a book.

Paul has the last word too re the events on 4th November 2015 at the Court of Session.

The Winds of Change covers 1991 -2005 and details everything that happened when Brady, Macari, Tommy Burns, Barnes, Dalglish, Wim Jansen, Dr Jo Venglos and Martin O’Neill managed the club. And wee Fergus certainly made his mark during this period!

Heard report but tried to replay and had no access.

    very strange ……

one post was along the lines of dry our eyes Aberdeen supporters are arrested for nothing etc etc

and one of my replies was simply

Aberdeen supporters accepting arrest for non crimes is down to them and should not mean others would or should be so stupid , two wrongs don’t make a right

someone replied about Tims being disrespectful to Police etc

and I replied if the Police had acted appropriately and not threatened the boy I would have no problem

another talked about respecting uniform etc

my response was along the lines

respect is earned and the attitude and language used by Police was one reason people were losing respect and if the policeman had respect for the uniform he wouldnt conduct himself outside of the law.

    you get the jist

    all have been removed

On Saturday the 28th of November I will take part in a sponsor cycle in aid of Sean Sweeney, the president of Wishaw Emerald CSC. He has not been able to work for sometime due to serious illness. We wish to raise money to help him and his family at this hard time.

Bear in mind that since I have not exercised since sometime in the 80’s this will be no easy task for me.

Please consider making a donation towards dedicated Celtic supporter Sean and his family.

Feel free to share on Facebook with your friends. Thank you!

Can I ask if it’s a member of the Celtic board who gave you the information that Celtic are paying ‘at or above Living Wage rates’? If it was then that is indeed worrying because that individual is lying to a Celtic season ticket holder and shareholder.

I’ll repeat what I posted on here recently so apologies to those who have read it before or have no interest.

At last year’s AGM Ian Bankier promised that Celtic Plc would consult with employees on the issue of the Living Wage. Why they felt the need to consult anyone to see if they would like a higher rate of pay bamboozles me, I’ve never, ever heard of the likes in my life.

Anyway, after some consultation, with an unspecified number of employees, Celtic agreed to pay some staff the Living Wage. This would take affect from 1st July 2015, six months after the ‘consultation’ process began. What on earth were they talking about?

Ah, but there was a fly in the ointment! Those who would now receive the LW would lose out on a long standing bonus system as a result. I believe they call it robbing Peter to pay Paul.

Anyway, on the plus side these employees would now be in receipt of the LW so all was good.

Well it was until the beginning of this month when the national LW went up. As a result of this rise, those employees are now 40p/hour poorer than the national LW wage rate.

Incidentally Paul none of this takes into account in excess of 400 match day employees who were never in receipt of the LW.

Ps I abhor the fact that this has become a political football that outsiders can use to have a kick at Celtic. However, the simple fact is that Celtic, by not paying a living wage, have brought this on themselves.

I was a minority of one in my group, over the value that TC brought to the team.

He wasn’t a showy player and in the modern game he would be described as a ” water carrier”.

However, he had immense influence on how we played.

*Was at a replay in Motherwell one Wednesday night. We had scraped a 2-2 tie in the first game on the Sunday (this was during the power cuts so Sunday games were allowed).

Motherwell had a former Liverpool player called Bobby Graham playing for them. He completely dominated the midfield in the first game. Ian St John his former colleague was in the dug out.

Big Jock had the team lined up with Jim Brogan at left back and Pat McCluskey as sweeper. However, Brogie was tasked with man marking Graham while Pat reverted to the full back position.

Just before half time Pat suffered an injury and was replaced by TC who immediately took over the left back position leaving Bobby Graham stuck in Brogie’s pocket.

We won the game thanks to a spectacular headed goal by Dixie on the hour mark against his old club. This came from a typical Tommy Callaghan run down the flank to the bye line with a pin point cross.

With regards to the matchday staff I suspect they’re not Celtic employees but agency staff. Now while I agree that Celtic could and should put steps in place to ensure agency staff also receive the LW it’s not actually then a lie to state that Celtic staff were set to receive it (subsequent 40p change aside which is a different point).

One of the things our board are very good at is ambiguity.

I’ve always been a bit sceptical of ‘I’m a celebrity get me out of here’ ( the wife watches it ) they always start off making a fire, by rubbing two sticks together, then pretentiously eat some witchety ole grubs. As soon as the cameras are switched off, they probably head back and polish off a five courser, in a plush hotel, followed by a big Havana, in the hot tub before a lazy night spread out on the ole Egyptian cotton sheets.
