AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

I have no time for the man but my main point in that post was Celtic’s pathetic PR.

If any Celtic FB gave livingstone abuse because of his religion then he or she should ndcould hve been felt with by the court

For our Chairman to play into the hands of the msm who hate us shows how far our Plc are away from Celtic fans and then for him to say we are a football club

    Surely the time to make a statement about the alleged online abuse of the Tory peer is when such abuse has been made- that same day or as damned near it as possible;

Not to store it in the back pocket to use as a prepared “defensive line to take” at the AGM a couple of weeks later to try and get said Tory out of a hole on his contested re-election to the Celtic board.

But if it did happen then was Bankier lying?

Shit I don’t care about any of our board members there’s more important things in life. But the hysterical overreaction to every AGM on here should be studied

    Summary of AGM

Video played, you can see it on the Celtic website now. Nicely done, pre-empted a fair bit of business that could’ve otherwise bogged down the meeting. Personal opinion, the Foundation make me so proud.

    Resolutions:

Uncontroversial until Ian Livingston’s reappointment. Vehemently opposed by one shareholder. Stirred emotions, broke the thus far quiet order of the day and folk had their say either at the microphone or shouting from their chair. Chairman struggled to keep order but was facing hostile attendees. He was however prepared and replied with a robust defence. This was an impassioned defence of his fellow Board member. The rhetoric out of character, accusatory. Aimed, I think, at actual trolls and abusers. It may not have been clear and narrow enough. He may have then dissed the entire audience with a comment about being ‘disappointed’ in the mood of the room. He may have made a James Hunt of his own defence in a later statement.

Special Resolution re Living Wage. The video had covered the Club’s position which is basically this:

Further to last year’s AGM they consulted staff. They have implemented the Living Wage. That has been missed in much coverage. They removed the bonus scheme. 147 of 150 staff were in agreement.

Around the time they implemented the Living Wage the Living Wage organisation increased the amount by 40p. All subscribers to the Living Wage Foundation Foundation have 6 months to comply.

Celtic’s position is that they reserve the right to set their own wage levels and not be bound by a non statutory body. Again this has been largely overlooked. If a member then Celtic is currently compliant and paying the Living Wage. They have not refused to peg the wages to the Living Wage. They are committed to a review within the 6 month period of grace that the members are allowed.

So let me repeat. Celtic have not refused to pay the Living Wage. If they were a member of the organisation they are in fact currently compliant. They will decide within the time limit allowed for members whether to comply with that organisation’s pay scale. Has anyone reported that?

    Questions from the floor:

Where is Ian Bankier’s fire in the belly that he showed today when it comes to Res 12?

Some more condemnation of Lord Livingston.

Some condemnation of the tone and aggressiveness of fellow attendees in a form of defence of the Board.

It was all really quite heated

Then a guy changed the tone with a question about the under 13 £50 season ticket that 4 years on from Armageddon carries a condition that it would not include a Club12/Rangers game. Premier League Clubs are now full of offers and promotions for kids, at their age they form an affinity for the Club and to then potentially exclude them from 2 games a season has no acceptable narrative. His daughter has newly discovered the Celtic Way because of this cracking deal of £50 and is going through that magical experience. Delivered it with humour, a twinkle in his eye and asked the Board to remove that clause, it’s irrelevant now for a stand alone strategy. Big round of applause and to be fair Peter Lawwell said that it would not be reviewed. Best question of the day, an actual addressable issue, get him on the Board.

Last couple of folk had some other nice comments about how Celtic Park’s makeover is fantastic, then another dig at lack of progress which Pater Lawwell batted back as too selective in its scope and it finished with a lovely video of Billy McNeill.

So in short not a great day in terms of progress or PR, but Celtic are actually currently compliant within the Living Wage and remain so until the 6 month period for review of the uplift of 40p has passed.

Abandoning the bonus scheme is something we each have to take a view on. The Board do not want to hand power of remuneration to the Living Wage Foundation as it is not a statutory body and noted Government intention to make the statutory Minimum Wage to £9 within 2 years.

Therein lies enough subtle nuance to see some of the media coverage as hysterical, and some of the uninformed criticism as just a little too over the top. I prefer the old CQN informed debate.

In terms of the Chairman I worry about 2 things. First his ability to fulfil the roll, an secondly the ‘not one of us’ narrative part of the criticism of him. I’d prefer folk argue the first without using the second.

Have you any evidence of racist abuse or that any of it came from Celtic supporters.

The backtracking is an insult. This is the same guy who wants us to be more like the Tartan Army.

I have no evidence, but assume Bankier does before he said it. Unless he’s an idiot.

    If he’s not an idiot??

Can you see any other Celtic player after Scott Brown staying at Celtic long enough to earn a testimonial? I can’t.

When I was growing up I remember-

    Davie Provan testimonial 1987

    Roy aitken testimonial 1987

    Tommy burns testimonial 1987

    Pat bonner testimonial 1991

    Paul mcstay testimonial 1995

    Peter grant testimonial 1996

    Since then……

    Henrik (sort of testimonial) 2004

    Jackie McNamara 2005

Scott Brown might be the last Celtic testimonial I see in my lifetime and I’m only in my mid-30s.

Football and Celtic has changed in the last 20-30 years and not all for the better.

We will miss Scott Brown when he is gone and he’ll be remembered as the last career Celt for many years to come.

  14. Bankier originally talks about a Torrent of base personal abuse but tells us later that he was only referring to a small number of specific comments.

He originally states that some of the messages Are Criminally abusive but later tones that down to believing they are unacceptable.

Doesn’t wash with me,he has lost all credibility, resignation is the honourable course.

Hamiltontim, thanks for your reply. First time i’ve had a post described as sensible lol

My gripe with our board is they don’t appear to try and match realistic ambitions for our team which our support have.

I would love it for the blog to concentrate even more on what happens on the pitch but the politics of football in Scotland , can dictate otherwise , unfortunately.

  16. The Huddle..Bankier aint Going Nowhere….Hes a Unionist Loving Tory Ass Kissing Bitch….Fits Right in With the Disgrace That is The Celtic, Money loving, Right Wing , Dont rock The Boat Board.

In my humble opinion the distance between ordinary supporters and the Board has never been greater.. More depressingly I fear this is a trend that will only get worse… God knows what link between club and fans will be in 5 years time.

  18. BK

Is your post saying that Celtic aren’t refusing to pay the LW, I’m unsure?

We’re not asking Celtic to join the LW Foundation we’re asking for them to seek accreditation. There is a difference mate.

  19. A lot of Celtic fans don’t want an unelected Tory peer and Zionist on the board.

And some people are surprised at that?

Non-Story whipped up by Bankiers utter stupidity and total lack of understanding of the Celtic support.

  22. Pfayr

Can he take others with him?

Got my youngest a season ticket today, things looking up.

  23. Maybe the board feel they don’t need the supporters.

That’s the way it seems to me.

They are running Celtic into the ground.

Why should we support tories and businessmen in their efforts to turn Celtic into Partick Thistle.

    I’m not playing anymore.

If the supporters don’t make a stand, it will only get worse.

The PLC, quite happy to insult their own fans…but say fecking nothing about the reality of corruption in Scotland.

What a strategy…look the other way while Celtic get shafted, and abuse your own supporters.

I wonder what fecking genius thought that strategy up.

    HH

  24. If it was criminally racist and was online then was it reported to the police, as it’s a crime?

Regardless, don’t know much about Iain Bankier but to make a statement like that at the AGM was utter stupidity. Clearly he does not understand the Celtic supporters and the SMSM agenda. When i read on the blog what he said this afternoon, i suspected that a statement clarifying his comments would be issued.

  25. Corkcelt

If we highlight a different word in the first statement then they tally.

“…. SOME of the messages are criminally racist.”

    ” a SMALL number….”

No time for thatcherite tories and their crusade to impoverish the working class for the benefit of their city friends but the reaction to his statement has been over the top. Some people are reacting to what they thought he said and not what he said.

If anyone sent him sectarian/racist abuse they are not the type of Celtic supporters I would defend.

I assume that those demanding that only acceptable types are allowed onto our Board use the same criteria when shopping, eating out, attending concerts etc? All of these activities would entail interaction with companies that would have boards of directors?

Of course hypocrisy has never stood in the way of a good old fashioned board bash.

    Cork Celt 9.33pm

Your post highlights a lack of credibility on the part of Mr Bankier. At the AGM he referred to a baseless personal campaign against Mr Livingstone. Those were his words.

Then in his backtracking statement he claims that he was talking about “a small number of specific comments which have been made on social media”.

So one minute Mr Bankier says it’s a baseless and personal campaign against the guy, then when pressed, he says it’s only a small number of comments he is talking about.

Now that hardly constitutes a campaign.

Mr Bankier has tied himself in knots on this one. He comes across as a bit thick at best, a sleekit liar at worst.
