AGM ahead

974

Are you looking forward to the AGM tomorrow? As always on these occasions, the questions after the votes will be far more interesting than the formal business of the day. The Living Wage appears on the agenda for the third year, courtesy of the Trust. Celtic now pay at or above Living Wage rates, although they have not signed up to the Foundation and the pay increase for lower-waged members of staff was accompanied with the withdrawal of a discretionary bonus.

Not sure what the cost of this was, or the impact on staff, but we’ll no doubt hear about it tomorrow. I should also say that I’m not signed up to the Living Wage Foundation either, as it has no relevance for my business.

The performance of the team (imperious domestically, impervious to improvement in Europe) will be the central concern from the hall. Celtic are a Champions League club, this is our focus. We need to be competing on that platform regularly.

I expect, and hope, shareholders get an update on Resolution 12, which looks increasingly relevant. You can bet questions will also be asked on whether or not there was a conspiracy to break tax, SPL and SFA rules, and to subvert an SPL Commission.

There’s not a great deal Celtic can say on this matter for now, beyond their statement last week.

Many thanks to Jim Craig and Brendan Sweeney for joining us on the blog last night. These events see the blog at its best and last night’s was no exception. You can buy Brendan’s book, Celtic: The Early Years, or Alex Gordon’s latest, The Winds of Change, Managing Celtic from 1991-2005, at the CQN Bookstore.

HH fhriend. You can be sure it will be worn with pride and don’t listen to the boul DD I’m as svelte as I ever was. As the song says looking forward to the package arriving…..its beginning to feel a lot like Christmas as the song goes.

Hope you’re feeling better. In days of yore you could have got that done over here without a visit to the Hospital.

Interesting congruence of events this week. Today’s long delayed report, by the PRU, (Bank of England) and the FCA (successor to the FSA, made up of bankers, overseeing bankers) into the “The failure of HBOS plc” (available as a PDF doc, but don’t rush, it is over 400 pages long and not yet sure if the word “masonic” is mentioned, though the word “inexperienced” is which may be an oblique reference. The report does recommend further investigation into at least 10 HBOS executives including one Andy Hornby, former CEO of HBOS and now CEO of Gala Coral, the latter of which hopes to complete a merger with Ladbrokes. Now, that deal is opposed by a major Ladbrokes shareholder, one Dermot Desmond, formerly of this parish but now operating from an Island Parish of his own, and no it is not Ireland. Hornby could face a complete ban in the city if found to have been in breach of his fiduciary duties etc re HBOS. Let us see if that possibility gives Dermot the opportunity to derail a deal through which Coral brings £2.2 billion of debt to the party. I am no sure if even the collective losses to the bookies on here would come close to that amount.

  4. Don’t know whether it’s an urban myth but is Murdo not in possession of a rather interesting piece of arm art???

I’ll avoid your suggestion that I indulge in a bit of acrobatics, but I’m just disagreeing with you, which is what you’re suggesting a blog is all about!

Anyway, I wasn’t bothered whether you enjoyed it or not, it was JJHS I replied to, copying his reply which was addressed to you. He mentioned a question he was going to ask, but decided not to, so I thought it was a bit rich to then complain about others who went ahead with their questions.

I think it would be an embarrassment for this place if a Lisbon Lion came on here, and no one came on to ask him anything, don’t you? It’s the only chance I get, I can assure you.

I also think it absurd that anyone should expect a 72 year old, not hiding behind a moniker, to be the vanguard in the battle to strip the cheats of titles.

I asked a couple, run of the mill stuff, but was happy to get Jim’s answers, so not upset at all at you.

Just disagreeing, as bloggers do, don’t we?

From Alex Brummer in The Mail,

    Losing streak

Too often, when faced with a merger, shareholders roll over and take the money and fail to ask the right questions.

It is refreshing therefore that maverick Irish billionaire Dermot Desmond publicly is questioning the proposed all-share merger of Ladbrokes and rival Gala Coral.

It has not been an easy time for bookies, with new gambling and gaming taxes putting pressure on the bottom line and challenges from online usurpers. But it is also worth noting that before he was replaced, former Ladbrokes chief executive Richard Glynn had, after a stumbling start, tackled the company’s online deficit.

A merger of two struggling franchises is a bad bet.

  12. Paul was articulate, accurate and ti the point, the others rambled on, one needs to laugh with the others talking in subjective fashion i.e i think, i am not sure that etc… If decision stands then LNS CONCLUSION IS VOID and if there is no rules to punish then a president can be set, and who would/ could challenge it???

i am also curious on what point of law bdo etc… Will appeal the big tax case, where is the misinterpret ion of law as far as i can see the law lords were Chrystal clear, due process was followed, all the ts and xs were ticked, you cant appeal cause you don’t agree with outcome, that is what the first two tribunal were about

  18. Evening folks!

It’s been a while since I last posted but I’m travelling down to Glasgow tomorrow night with a group of pals (3 of us tims, 3 who don’t really follow a team but could be tempted to after this weekend hopefully!) anyway, it’s a bit of a lads weekend away and I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice about pubs/bars that we could visit before and after the game. I think after the match we will head to the city centre and try to take in El Clasico somewhere. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I might have to go easy on them next time. Aw,wait-that’s the Dublin trip, innit?

  21. Paul did a good job in difficult circumstances. English and Wilson in their comfort zone abetted by the host. Macleod was simply disgraceful. Paul didn’t give them a headline came across as measured and reasonable simply looking for the matter to be properly investigated.

  22. On and off blog , bit sporadic at minute with work commitments so thought I’d just missed Clogher posting.. Was also wondering about TCR. I know he favours the moon howling shift so if you are lurking TCR I hope the injuries are healing.

Thanks to all involved whether asking or answering.

I listened to our host on national radio earlier.

He put his position across very well regarding ebt’s and LNS.

I met Pat Stanton on holiday in Spain. I thanked him for his contribution to the Celtic history. He said he was a Hibee, but that me my wife and four weans support the greatest team in the world. I love Pat Stanton.
