AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

Like many things in life Free Masonry and how it effects you can depend on your own personal outlook.

About sixty years ago, as a teenager I made a disparaging remark about Masonry to a workmate. His reply was interesting. ‘They hate me more than they hate you. You are a Catholic and if you go for a job in competition to them, you have no chance. On the other hand, I who am not a Catholic, would present at least a small threat to their job chances.

I think it’s clear the SFA never imagined this happening. The fact it was Rangers was a major fly in the ointment.

Rather than follow a set process and end up at an outcome, they started with the result (ie a form of “Rangers” somewhere in the league) and managed to find a way of arriving there.

Trying to get them in the SPL was a joke. And then trying to bully the SFL clubs to get them in Division One was equally shameful.

They had no obligation to pay any debts – those disappeared with liquidation. The SFA made the new club liable for footballing debts to allow the “same club” position to take hold, but without actually being clear on this. And they never will be. They know it’s anew club, but they don’t have the stones to come out and say so.

He’s always been very media-savvy. One of the guys on Five Live (I think Ian Dennis) was bumming him up for the Sunderalnd job. Could be wrong, but sounded very much like he had put him up to it. Then he’s on TalkSport touting himself for Palace.

If you are any good in that game then those jobs will find you. Not the other way about.

  11. ”The Bedroom Tax is an appalling policy that discriminates against some of the most vulnerable in society and has caused great distress to many of my constituents since it began in April this year.

I have repeatedly made my absolute opposition to the Bedroom Tax clear, and have voted against it on five separate occasions, when the legislation was passed on 15th June 2011, in 1st and 21st February 2012, on 24th October 2012 and again in a previous Opposition Day Debate on 27th February 2013.

In addition, I have been on the streets of Airdrie on two occasions campaigning against the Bedroom tax and took part in the Glasgow Rally.

Currently, I am conducting an Inquiry with my colleagues on the Scottish Affairs Committee into the Impact of the Bedroom Tax in Scotland. We have already heard worrying evidence in this Inquiry from North Lanarkshire Councillor, Harry McGuigan.

I have ensured that the Committee will hold its first ever session in Airdrie Town Hall to take evidence on the impact of this policy here and across North Lanarkshire. This will also allow local people affected by the Bedroom Tax to give evidence directly.

As you may know, I was not present at the vote which took place earlier this week. Prior to the date being set for this debate, I had agreed to speak on the issue of youth unemployment at a conference where participants from across Europe joined to discuss new ways to tackle this scourge.

It was arranged for me to be ‘paired’ which is a long held convention in Parliament. This arrangement allows MPs who must miss a vote due to personal circumstances or to attend work commitments outside Westminster to be paired with someone in the same situation on the other side. This maintains the same balance in the vote and ensures that neither MP paired missing the vote affects the outcome of the vote; ie., they cancel each other out.

The outcome of all of this is that me being ‘paired’ didn’t affect the vote or the result (the government won by 252 to 226 with a majority of 26). If I and the MP I was paired with had both voted the result would of course have been 253 to 227 which would still have been a government majority of 26.

I appreciate that most people will not have heard of pairing before now, however parliamentarians do know of the practise. Therefore, it was extremely misleading, and indeed malicious, for SNP MPs and MSPs to take to Twitter claiming that Labour lost the vote due to our MPs not turning up.

It is more than disingenuous of the SNP to attack Labour MPs who had arranged a pairing for this debate, which ensured there was no detriment to the overall vote, when they themselves have failed to turn up to important votes on this very subject.

Indeed, during the aforementioned debates on the Bedroom tax, in which I participated – the majority of which were on the legislation itself – all SNP MPs have missed at least one of these votes.

    For clarity:

15th June 2011, final vote (3rd Reading) on Welfare Reform Bill, which included the Bedroom Tax – Angus McNeil and Mike Weir did not vote

1st February 2012 , vote on Lord’s Amendments – Stewart Hosie, Angus McNeil and Mike Weir did not vote

21st February 2012, vote on Lords Amendments – Eilidh Whiteford and Mike Weir did not vote

24th October 2012, vote on new Housing Benefit Regulations – Angus McNeil, Angus Robertson and Pete Wishart did not vote

Misleading the public on the impact of pairing is not a new tactic of the SNP. Back in April the Daily Record published a retraction following Joan McAlpine MSP including allegations in her column in the newspaper that my colleague Ian Davidson MP had abstained from a vote on Bedroom Tax, when in fact he had been paired.

I felt it was important to restate my opposition to the Bedroom Tax, and to clarify that my absence was prearranged and did not – contrary to the misrepresentation of the SNP – affect the outcome of the vote. I look forward to a Labour Government abolishing the Bedroom Tax in 2015.

well I did a lot of shouting about why I couldn’t understand Celtics silence regarding the shenanigans at sevco (or whoever they are) and their masonic brothers in the sfa

I guess that I trust auldheid and canalmar and morrisey and co, because I believe that they have a similar agenda to me. that agenda is not about board bashing as many would accuse us, its about whats best for celtic. And by that I mean the celtic family and not just the employees

but I don’t understand one thing and that’s “why do the clubs discussions with the sfa need to remain confidential”

I guess its maybe because the sfa want to punish sevco after the lies etc have come to light and maybe the sfa realise that allowing them back without stipulating what they are

(quiet at the back) by that I mean they are a dead club and sevco are a new club

or maybe the sfa has taken steps when prompted by celtic and celtic don’t want to be seen as the initiator

I wish I knew the reasons, there could be a great many reasons, but all the same as long as the club have managed to convince some good fholks that they are working behind the scenes then we should give them a chance

for me the fight wont end when the games up at the sfa and some heads roll and the sfa is finally reorganised , for me it will then be a time to look at the alleged neutrality of the Scottish media and the reasons why they pandered to the bigoted huns and promoted the reincarnation of frankenrangers

what were their motivations, was it the good of the game? I don’t think very many celtic men believe that king and keevins and the likes are backing sevco for the greater good of the SPL.

For anyone interested in football, we have dawning upon us one of the most important transfer windows in recent years – it is only three weeks away.

If our objective is to come out a transfer window stronger than we started, then we failed in the last one. Guys like Puuki , Boerrighter, Balde, Biton may come good, but right now there impact is negligible.

Which leads me to a key point, and the importance if this window.

Some guys come to our club and make an impact within weeks, Hooper, izzy, Commons , being examples, some take around half a season to come good Lustig, Wilson, Wanyama, whilst others sadly don’t come good at all ( see annual report and look under Impairments).

If I look at our current team, IMHO, most of the players took at least half a season to come good.

So, what we need in this window is 2/3 players who will come good in the summer.

We also need to remember it is a World Cup year, and chances are the majority from Izzy, Sammy, Mikel, Efe, Fraser, Virgil will be involved.

It is also likely that when we face CL qualifiers one or two of that lot will be injured, exhausted or both.

Throw in a possible departure or two, and we could be facing CL qualifiers without 2/3 first choice players.

My plea to NL and the board, is to prepare for this now.

Keep buying the frogs ( as Paul 67) calls them, but let’s also make sure we get a couple of guaranteed Princes as well.

Spot-on, I’m sure they must have cut some sort of deal then when NewCo failed to get into the SPL the spivs rode roughshod right over it.

I believe in the the signifigance,as P Mc G says of it not being rejected by the board can not be overlooked.

This motion went from being ‘unnecessary’ to being ajourned-with ongoing dialogue with our clubs company secretary.I hope that if we can move the opinion of the board,as such, in a week then hopefully as time goes on more and more of the truth will come to light. As has been said this issue is ‘live’.I hope the other clubs now know we are not doing nothing.

In regards to the living wage I feel vexed that our clubs board opposed and got the vote they were hoping for on this resolution. This is an issue,I believe that is Celtic to the core,it denotes our ethos as a club.I thought Janette findlay done herself(as a celt) and that ethos of our founding father proud.I believe in highlighting this issue in the way she done so the long term may see a different outcome with,i would hope its implementation within a couple of years at our club.
