AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

In the CQN singles there is a draw.

Sometimes draws can be lucky, some are not.

I can assure you if we get a chance to play 18 holes,

you will not find any nostalgia expressed for that mob.

In golfing comparisons they were tee-ing it up in the

    rough for years. HH

You have consistently portrayed the resolution proposers as having been “played” by PL and the Board today.

Like me, I’d assume you are unaware of what was said or promised in this “playing” and duping of these poor naive people by the street-wise Board.

You have reached your conclusion impatiently without waiting for the full facts to emerge.

Can you explain this to me? How does the Board benefit from deferring the resolution for a short while rather than defeating it outright? Do you think the resolution proposers are going to forget all about it?

Or are their skills so superior to ours that they can make us all forget about their promise to take this issue forward in discussion with an open explanation to all supporters in time?

I can wait. We are not going anywhere.

  6. Patrick Thistle beat every team in the EPL and another 6o odd as well…..that weee nail a hammered into ma wa is biding though………..and nobody should mention Spurs ever again……………….but the blog is braw today…and Dads xmas is wizzing its way from CQN headquarters ,my only fear is that its too heavy for him to pick off the floor when it is pushed through the letter box ….Big Nan included the rhyme “I do not like thee Dr Fell. The reason why I cannot tell. But this I know and know it well.I do not like you Dr Fell”……………braw …..Bankier will be looking over his shoulder me thinks ….braw!

May I add, that no one from CQN that I have had the pleasure

of golfing with has an opinion any different from mine.

    Not missed.

Something will rise from their ashes again.

Will they show remorse ? Doubt it.

    We are a PLC?

What is that supposed to mean?

Nobody ever posts the alternatives,if there even are any.

    Always gurning and complaining.

The same misery guts that probably jeered Fergus.

    Replace Lawwell? Who with?

Get shot Desmond! Go and get the money up and buy him out.

Spoilt rotten if you ask me.

I think the blog has been really positive this week highlighting all that is good in the Celtic family (Big Nan,Cowieghirl and the humourous progress of Kiki’s hips) So many other tremendous contributions regarding less fortunate children with disabilities and serious illnesses. However,I would like to see the end of this phrase ‘windae licker’ as used last night ,at the times specified.Sadly ,it has been used at least 6 times and,to my knowledge, never challenged ,sincere apologies if it has been and I have missed it. It contradicts all that is good on this fantastic site.

No need to aplogise for the delay.

The essence of your (way too) long post is that we must all vote yes.

    So that was altogether predictable.

Not to worry. At least you’re now aware of the pairing system. Every day is a school day.

  11. anyone else not impressed with our chairman , from refering to the deid club twice, when opening the agm and in his video interview, why? when the board line is we run an independant fiscal policy at the plc.

worse was to come with his comment on fans behaviour at next away game , with trouble now being out the bottle and difficult to stop it happening again, !!!! he doesn’t have a clue,

Setting free the Bears. In my opinion the Board come out of resolution 12 in good light they have not knocked it back they instead say they will meet with the supporters who framed the resolution at some time in the future meanwhile the proposers of the resolution cannot divulge why the agreed to this ? Now in the proposed future meeting(s) will they be able to inform us at that time ? If you look at CQN I think it is fair to say we are divided some think the proposers did well others are less sure. That is a clever tatic divide and conquer that is how I see it. H.H.

‘What I mean Ernie – Labour didn’t introduce that minimum wage to aid, benefit or to assist the proletariat – Labour introduced it to help their business class, corporate cronies bleed the working,or under-class.’

    ###

Maybe that’s why so few SNP MPs were present to vote for it then?

I thought it was down to the pairing system.

I think you’ll find it’s the benefits system, not the minimum wage that benefits employers.

  14. Auldheid,

Thanks again for your part in making history.

Thanks also for attempting to walk through the minefield of trying to explain what has been going on whilst trying not to compromise issues CURRENTLY to be held in a degree of confidence.

Anyone who has followed this issue in detail can join the dots and understand what has transpired

I would love to have been a fly on the wall when the importance of Article 66 was explained and the relevance of the CF material was discussed.

Still haven’t sorted our email difficulties but I guess that’s no great surprise when 2 “auld heids” are involved.

I am more than happy with the outcome today re Resolution 12

    Best Regards

If it wasn’t remitted for further debate the box of proxy’s would have voted it down. The motion lives to fight another day.

  17. El Maestro – you may wish to equate desiring the return of rangers with it just being a football game but of course it had much more baggage than that – and that is what you are calling for a return of.

Nice threat of violence there El Maestro – how very clever of you.

SFTB – you are still trying to put words in my mouth – but let me be very clear here – I am accussing the board of cowardice and most certainly not the resolutioners. In actual fact it is you who are making the accusation – not me.

I had not thoroughly read back to the posts but when I did I could find no explanation for the adjournement – I still dont because as you point out – its a secret.

Incidentally isnt saying – “Canamalar’s explanation and Auldheid’s explanation on this have remained clear and simple, though, ultimately, secret” a contradiction in terms?

    Cracker.

  19. Also I am confused by various posters who say the resolution fights to live another day. The ship has sailed on the AGM – there is no other place for it to be debated bar next year’s AGM and I’m pretty sure the club wont hold and EGM for this. So are we really saying lets wait a year?

  20. Joe Filippis Haircut on

WilliamKentigern67. It certainly does fella because today no answer was given on the Boards perceived lack of action. Time will tell if an answer is forthcoming.H.H.

  21. Gerald766…..I have a differing opinion from El Maestro on the relative merits of ‘an Everton type team ‘ and Celtic’s current team in a pash poor league.

Celtic have exponentially more followers than Everton but doesn’t make us a better team.

Common sense tells us that it is an issue of EPL riches v SPL poverty of resources.

IMHO,Joe Ledley would be moving to a stronger team but I doubt he would be any more than a squad member playing circa 15-20 times per season.

He would be better off staying at Celtic.

    Neat sidestep.

The posters on here have always been divided about every issue under the sun. A few posters reacted in an OTT way to what they perceived was a defeat but most people have been quite unperturbed and saw today’s development as a chance for better dialogue between Board and fans, leading at some unspecified stage to a greater openness.

Now, back to the questions you avoided.

What do the Board do if, as you suggest, they are bluffing and have no intention of cooperating with the resolution proposers? When the res. props ask for an answer or dialogue, do you imagine that continually fobbing them off is a masterstroke? There has to be an end game somewhere? Can you imagine what the Board’s devious strategy is?

Me, I think they meant what they said. Nothing more devious or masterful than that. In many ways, they backed down to the res. props from an initially opposed position.
