AGM report, Living Wage, Rory Bremner, show us the deeds

1098

Celtic’s Annual General Meeting, held at Celtic Park today, was a livelier event than usual.  The board received a hostile response to their refusal to back a resolution to provide all staff with at least the Living Wage.  Several impassioned points were made from the floor, which convinced chairman, Ian Bankier, to dispense with his prepared response and provide answers to specific questions.

The vote went against the resolution based on the proxy votes cast by the chairman but the board have never lost the floor so convincingly on any prior issue.

Resolution 12, encouraging the club to purse the game’s authorities on matters relating to the governance of liquidated Rangers was adjourned indefinitely by the requisitioners.  On proposing the adjournment, a spokesman for the requisitioners (our own Morrissey23) explained that they had met the club and received information not previously known, and that further meetings were planned.

Fergus McCann made an unexpected contribution to the AGM by email through the chairman, extoling the virtues of financial director, Eric Riley, who he commended for 19 years’ service in pursuing Celtic’s interests.  Fergus asked for, and got, an applause for Eric Riley, which resulted in the first unanimous show of hands to re-elect a director I have seen at a Celtic AGM.

AGM questions can be a tortuous affair but they were on the money this year.  We had poetry, questions about financial governance including a question as to whether the club owns all of it’s perceived property assets.  Ian Bankier confirmed it did, before planting his tongue in his cheek to insist “I’m not going to show you the deeds”.

When one shareholder expressed frustration that a new Scottish club is pretending to be a now liquidated club, chief executive, Peter Lawwell, retorted, “Rory Bremner can pretend to be Tony Blair”.

    I think he knows something.

  3. Absolutely no question that Peter Lawell knew his comment about Rory Bremner would go

viral, and that he couldn’t have foreseen the fury.

I hope this is an opening salvo from Celtic on what many consider has been an uneasy overlong silence, on newco, oldco, deidco.

Time to end the farce and put Celtic’s stance on record.

  5. NegAnon, Would you be happier if the Board just stone walled and defeated the motion, which they could have done quite easily. They engaged with those putting the resolution, surely that is what we want. They have hired a lawyer in Amsterdam, they are trying to progress safe standing, they are pursuing any opportunity to play on a more International Stage. Lawell has indicated albeit by a joke that they are in tune with the Supporters re the fact that Sevco are a new Club. Personally I see a lot of positives, of course I’d like to be privy to the info the bhoys received but I do trust them and am willing to be patient on that one.

  6. By the sounds of things Jeanette Findlay was the star of the show and the gimlet-eyed Bankier was his usual self, the pantomime villain, penny pinching with the low-paid as the Chair of a club founded on charitable lines.

I never had the shares to support Canalamar as I had passed mine on to my son but I persuaded him and his cousin to give their share support to Canamalar & Co and they have to trust them to act accordingly as is the case with any nominee.

No doubt in the fullness of time we will hear why they suspended the resolution, though I respect their right to keep certain sensitive matters to themselves. That is also a trust we place when giving others the right to act for us.

EmeraldBee\o/ proud to be an internet bampot, thanks for the kind words from you and Mrs EmeraldBee.

  7. Resolution postponed indefinitely. Fairly certain that’s it over. I am not attempting to be cynical but I am with those who believe the board may have indeed shown Machiavellian aforethought and silenced those would openly question their, the boards, motives whilst not having to explain why in public and risking the ire of the Celtic support in General. What is so secret we can’t all be told?

    JFH,

WilliamKentigern67. It certainly does fella because today no answer was given on the Boards perceived lack of action. Time will tell if an answer is forthcoming.H.H.

Bingo, now you know why the agreement was reached, that and Morisseys message might have been a starter for 10

  9. Oglach if the board have stitched up Canamalar it will come to light and they will pay a heavy price for this.

Would the board jeopardise their reputation and jobs for the sake of CO & the SFA?

I doubt it but I have faith in the Celtic support to do the right thing.

No question about it PL knew what he was saying and where it would go. This reminds me off his unknown universe joke which of course got plenty of laughs went viral and was never challenged for obvious reasons…!

Settingfreethebears. I have not side stepped anything my understanding was that resolution 12 was put forward to look for an answer or answers. The AGM has passed and we the Celtic support do not have an answer now the Board say they will hold talks with the resolution formers I think that is clever it takes the immediate pressure to answer off the Board. When the meeting takes place the Board can open by asking all at the meeting to agree on confidentiality or talks cannot progress in other words we have been fobbed off.Now obviously you see it differently and only time will tell who is reading the Board right you or me.H.H.

Fully agree ……… There’s plenty of time for the negatonians to come to the fore when we are not doing well……best period of our history (with rankers deed) and they are STILL moaning, God, give me strength…

  14. Generally, I think as a club we are doing pretty well, given our environment.

And the business acumen assemble at the top table today would make any business anywhere, envious.

But all these guys (where are the women ?) are on 6 figure salaries and far removed from the daily grind of people on minimum wage. zero hour contracts etc

Every year they pick a ‘buzz phrase’ for their presentations, this year it was ‘Charity is in our DNA’ I heard it from 4 different speakers today. A very laudable value, and one most Celtic fans would like to see increased over the coming years. Where we can, help the needy, the poor and vulnerable, but alongside that we have to look after our employees, and that’s why I find the defeat of the Living wage resolution, so disappointing.

  15. Enjoyed the wee get together with some cqn bhoys today for billy no’wells gig in the pheonix(found it)very enjoyable afternoon pishin werselves at the deid mob..hh

  17. Corkcelt – of course I wouldnt have been happy. But let me be clear in my view. The Board did not want to debate res 12 because it leads them into showing their hand (I think they want to prop up the hun). They are very worried that this wont go down well amongst the support. So kicking this into the long grass was the best outcome for them. They have succeeded in that. This is not a criticism of the guys who discussed it with them (despite others claiming I am criticising them) – but we have seen duplicitious responses from this board recently (claiming they werent sending supporters personal details to the police and safety concerns from GCC for example – all tosh).

SFTB – the Board in my opinion will claim at some point there is no evidence they can use meanignfully and call a halt to it – no public debate etc etc. End of.

i am pleased they have hired a lawyer – though note Bankier’s criticism of the support. I see no other positives.

    You are totally wrong mate.

Celtic thought the Res unnecessary and yet changed that view. So going along with the Boys made then Men? They would have to renege on what was agreed and Men do not do that.

  19. Typical hun attutide, personal threats to PL to follow.Hope he takes the bull by the balls now.

  20. Big Nan – how are their reputations at risk – they dont give a monkeys about what we think (apart from if it hits them in the pocket). They only care about the money.

I think the Board have advised Canamalar and team that, if sevco don’t go bust in December, they will raise resolution 12 with the SFA, since they know sevco will be liquidated in December….

  23. If the word Sevco has been deemed sectarian by rags like the Scotsman- can we now use the term “the impersonators” when referring to deidco?

  24. Neil canamalar Lennon hunskelper extrordinaire on

    Neganon2,

I am happy with how the board have handled this issue without our intervention, I’m even happier they want to include us going forward. There does that help ? Remember, I have never been the biggest fan of the board so hopefully that might lend some gravity to the decision the lead to todays outcome.

  25. Statement timed for the hundits to get a kick at PL as well on SSB and Shortbread. What was the getting mauled by a dead sheep jibe again?

  26. Have Sevco threatened to send in the lawyers yet? We are the real Rangers look here is the receipt for the history we purchased a couple of years ago unfortunately we have misplaced the deeds for Ibrox and well about everything else. No Surrender WATP!!

  27. Ryecatcher – Nice to see a football related post.

I agree with you that we would experience defeat in the EPL on a frequent basis with the squad we have. However, with the funds available to us in this league, giving us an opportunity to compete on a level playing field, it would not take long for us to move up in the European rankings through investment in the team. As it stands, we have very little chance of even getting to pot 3 classification.

We do have a much stronger foundation as a club than most, if not all, EPL teams. It’s just a shame that we are the big fish in a small pond. The fact that we are able to compete in the CL speaks wonders for our leadership and for our players. No matter how well we do, it unfortunately never going to be enough for many of our so called fans.

  28. Absolutely disgusted at OUR boards decision regards the ‘ living wage ‘ at Celtic Park.

Sitting there pontificating in their designer suits that are being squeezed by their ample bellies.

A truly disgusting representation of our club.

They should hang their collective heads in shame!

On resolution 12. I trust CQNers to have done the correct thing and will continue the fight for justice.
