AIK, Thistle, James Forrest again

281

While we hoped for a backlash, the performance on Saturday against Dunfermline was in the post.  Scoring 12 in two league games this month is more of a measure of where we are right now, but Tuesday’s defeat cast a long shadow.  Whatever hangover exists, it needs to lift by Thursday.

Two pieces of positive news arrived yesterday: a home tie in the quarterfinals, against Partick Thistle, and AIK lost at home to Kalmar.  Thistle will be no easier than Dunfermline, but they are the only lower league team left in the competition and the tie is at Celtic Park.

AIK rested five who eliminated Sheriff on Thursday, but as we know, a defeat at home to a team with significantly fewer resources damages morale.  AIK will slip four points off the pace if Djurgarden win at home tonight.

For a while on Saturday, it looked like our monopoly of domestic trophies could end.  Winning 28 consecutive cups games is unfathomably consistent, even the greatest teams have off days.  It is a measure of James Forrest that he again delivered.

  1. The two bit Premier Sports will be praying that they get a big Old Firm final or at least semi final to try and flog some subscriptions.

I really don’t know why they don’t just jump straight in with a box office event one off price or allow a 24 hr pass like sky do with nowtv.

They would make so much more money .

But this season really is a joke for the scottish football fan.

Our domestic coverage is split between 3 different operators SKY,BT and Premier Sports.

The best and cheapest of the three ‘BT Sport’ of course will be sadly gone at the end of this season but will still cover all European group matches and beyond for both competitions [Champions league and Europa league]

Friend of mine is a generous sort.

    Always buying others drinks.

I have no doubt he is “probably welcome down his pub tonight, again”.

I assume Beaton is a similar sort?

I think the difference is that Beaton will be getting drinks bought FOR him after getting one over on the Tims.

“It is a fact that broony accidentally came across a post that was highly critical of the manager; it is a fact that broony accidentally liked said post criticising the manager.

It is also a fact that everyone ever committed a crime was falsely accused. Just ask them”

Your first two facts contradict your true beliefs about the events since your proof consists of a fallacy.

Because many guilty parties deny the truth of their guilt does not mean that all “guilty” parties were guilty of their crimes nor that those protesting their innocence are disingenuous (e.g. Birmingham 6 and Guildford 4)

    AND,

because Broony found one critical comment does not mean that he found many. The proof should consist of many negative comments being liked by Broony- is there such evidence?

  4. EMBRAMIKE @ 6:20 PM,

    Thanks for the considered reply…

“My point is that his role on ECA for the last 5 years puts Celtic at the core of trying to reshape European competitions such that Celtic is no longer disadvantaged as we complain about now.

That’s fair enough and my point is it didn’t/doesn’t. Since PL went on the strategy commitee things have actually got worse in European terms for Celtic.

    My feelings are this…

The ECA was plotting to make a Pan European Elite break away League. This League would have two divisions… Celtic earmarked for the second division.

We needed to get our team, organisation and environs up to standard. The team and environs were upgraged, we were looking to build a Hotel with a Dublin themed cafe (allegedly).

The ECA/UEFA league might not have been the EPL but it was a no bad consolation prize for our execs.

DD must have been salivating – how much would Celtic have been worth then? No doubts in my mind Celtic could have been a Division 1 Club in no time.

So Rodgers made sense, just as O’Neil did when we were chasing the EPL rainbow.

Now the main drivers for ECA were Real Madrid and plotters like Karl-Heinz Rummenigge. They were finding it tough as UEFA were stuffing their “elite” colleagues with gold (UCL easy participation and lots of prize money).

Now when the Bayern fans (who own the Club) found out what KHR was doing they went mental. KHR is no longer the Chairman of Bayern and the ECA agreed to a restucturing of the UCL that was highly benefical to the “ECA elite” Clubs. For those of us with delusions of grandeur, Celtic and Rangers are not elite Clubs in this regard, so lose out.

The next UCL changes are going to be even worse for teams like Celtic.

So, BR gets hung out to dry, Lenny gets the gig. I’d expect pulling back on investment on the Stadium and surrondings – not looking good for the Hotel and if you want a Dublin themed cafe… try Aer Lingus;)

Now Peter Lawwell is NOT A PLAYER as he’d like to potray, just like he is not a Director of Football or a great wheeler dealer in the player market… he is a financial controller.

Someone earlier asked if not PL who?

How about a real wheeler dealer –  Jean-Michel Aulas, look how he talks about Man U poaching his players and this is a man with real skin in the game

“Moussa Dembele will not leave,” he told French publication Le Parisien.

“The model was made for him. We recruited according to him.

“He becomes centre number one, which he was not totally last season.

“It is not a question of money, it is a question of ambition.“

“Moussa is part of the project just like Juninho or others,” he added.

“We want him to succeed and to reach the France team from his club which is Lyon.

“We have a great deal of confidence in its capabilities and potential.”

With the EPL and ECA bubble burst what’s in thid for DD anymore?

Outside of being a financial controller PL has little to offer, yet as has been said by many, PL has got rid of all quality personnel that challenge him and replaced them with yes men.

Celtic are now a shell of the club we should be, with a vaccuum inside where a litany of quality departures (players, managers, coaches, scouts etc etc) should be.

Talk about disingenuous, is to use people who were actually framed from the outset. People that were never near the crime scene. Give me a break.

It was broonys that liked the comment – that he does not deny.

There are no parallel’s between that & the guildford 4, or the Birmingham 6. It is extremely lame that you would use this analogy.

Maybe if broony was sitting at home reflecting on his own abysmal performance rather than looking for someone else to blame we would never be having this pretty dire exchange.

  11. The summer transfer window closes 2 weeks tonight. I tried to explain this bi-annual ‘dance’ to a fellow Tim by referring to our younger days at ‘the dancing’ .

The most sought after young ladies were 8s, 9s and 10s. If you were a 4 or a 5, despite your best efforts, even if you had money and a nice car, you had little chance of attracting one of the ‘elite’. You couldn’t see them for male 8s and 9s who had a much better chance of “pulling”.

As the most attractive targets had waited until they heard the proposition they thought they deserved, if you were lucky you might get yourself a 5, 6, or on a good day, a 7 from the rest. More likely particularly as the evening drew to a close you ended up with a 4 ,5 or 6 – if you were lucky at all.

One thing you didn’t do is admit the number of knock backs you received when you were punching way out of your league or that you spent the night giving it your best shot only to have your target swept away by the promise of a flash car, a nice flat and a sizeable ‘package’.

Unfortunately in transfer terms, the SPFL are a 4 and Celtic are a 5/6 and so find it hard to attract the top talent despite having a few quid stashed away and a mad crowd. We will see as the window of opportunity nears if we have to settle or can indeed punch above our weight.

    Agree, on both replies

    Shved – not quoted

Morgan – not doing it ( didn’t even do it at Sunderland )

    Sinclair – not wanted

    Arzani – not fit

    Johnston – over quoted

Johnston like Morgan promoted at every opportunity, even when he has ‘fatigue’ but

appears for the very next game?

Not only do we not have ‘millions of wingers’ we don’t even have the guy that coined it.

This window IMO, not so the much hated last summer window, has been an unmitigated disaster, the loss of Tierney made worse by team selection “difficulties ‘ and the ballsy cheek to use the tedious ‘we’ll see if we qualify, then we’ll try again ‘ line.

A porky of course because we have never signed a player of significance after we qualified for the Champions League, turfed out so its ‘o me miserum’, we need to keep the lights on, and we’ll have to use the Kieran fee.

Enough for Celtic fans, too much for those rightfully IMO with other things to do on Thursdays and Sundays

We need four players to preserve the title run and get us past Christmas in Europe
