Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

Honestly mate………….we are doing the exact opposite.. Our good players leave and we gamble on replacements.

We were in the CL in Lenny’s final season weren’t we ?

  3. Deila was brought in to build a Young team on the cheap…Simple…Get used to it, Imo it will be this season AND next before we know if the Ronny thing works…Just My Thoughts…

Ther was another thing that annoyed me on Tuesday. If you think back the referee was listening to the shout. Some of them do that a lot.

After the Celtic “goal” he didn’t know what to do. Our players should be wise enough to this type of character.

Every signing at our level is a gamble. I think we have a better squad than we did one and two years ago. Lenny got us into CL in 13/14 by the skin of our teeth against dross and we were very poor in it also. We also wasted the cash on Balde, Pukki and Boerigter. Boerigter must have cost us at least 6m in fees and wages.

  6. Thanks Roy, Just saw that during an ad break, watching a movie here with the family.

The teams we beat in the qualifiers back then were pretty much identical ?

The spend what you earn policy finished when the Huns went bust. Lawwell has publicly came out and said the Huns not being in the league costs us 10 million a year. That had to be made up hence the selling of top players. Don’t know about you but I would rather be where we are today than be depending on them . The fans had the chance to step up to the mark and prove we didn’t need them but didn’t most weeks bar big games 25-30 k.

  10. Not so long ago we were “gambling” on Virgil.

Before him we gambled on Fraser. I also seem to remember we gambled on Hooper.

Strange how sometimes it is OK to gamble and other times it is not (pukki, balde etc).

    What’s the difference?

    20/20 hindsight.

I will give you one thing — you certainly do not lack stamina.

Reading the tea leaves for 10 years and still getting it wrong.

The Irish Raj bought into the club as an arbitrage play to get us into the EPL.

The story of the souring of his relationship with MON is the other dimension.

For the record I think that MON taking the job was an arbitrage play to get the ManU job.

Consequently when the EPL move was proving harder than expected and the boardroom grumbling about MON proclivity for giving out high wages and letting the squad stagnate became a clamour for change things were always going to get more difficult and change was on the way.

Seville was a bump in the road.

It raised the expectations of the sport and it put the club into the EU big time. Offered hope that the club really had some EU muscle and the good times were coming. However that was not on the agenda of the Irish Raj — no easy route to the EPL meant that the spending was being cut back and the debt was now an issue.

Seville should have been the catalyst to great things however the bean counter faction wanted to flex their muscles now that the cheque book was being put away.

Oh what might have been in the summer of 2003 — jMcF signs along with LM coming back a complete player. Then no GK fallouts and the holy grail of finding a real LB? The foundations were there and the board threw it all away.

Fast forward 5 years and things really get messy.

PL is now fully up to speed — no more last minute BB contract deals on big money forever — looking good in the league with the chance to get in a CF with real potential.

But no — déjà vu all over again.

And how wrong you are with your 2008 TFOD analysis.

PL played a blinder — for them — with his penny wise pound foolish attitude.

The 2 years in the CL that we gifted them almost saved them from their decade of overspending and fly boy tax arrangements.

That is the loss to the club of — at least — 2 years CL money almost saved the TFOD and gave them a new lease of life.

    That was 6 years ago.

Unfortunately it sounds all to familiar today.

PL has single handedly hobbled the club and reduced us to a lifeless husk.

The continual waste of money on useless forwards ….

6 out of 7 failures is my count.

If it doesn’t make sense then it doesn’t make sense.

  12. I don’t think Ronny has made any bad signing’s. Some of the loan players last year were dross and Scepovic is not doing it but i don’t think Ronny signed any of them.

  13. Roy….

    Dukla pic…

Now if any of our players had put it about as Stevie did that night we’d have had a different result!

Easily the most unselfish, industrious and single minded performance by any Celtic player anywhere, anytime (in my lifetime).

Stevie C is more than a legend!

  14. WIll be at the game tomorrow to support the team I love.

But if you think we are going to the final of the EL

Karagandy were rotten, they mugged us 2-0 in the first leg at their place. You could argue either way i personally think we are better now.

We lost 3 goals v Malmo over two legs from set pieces and had a perfectly good goal chalked off. If the first leg was away i think we would have went through and would also have beaten other teams that we could have faced. Will never know all the same. I just don’t think we are as bad as being made out.

  16. I’m confused I didn’t realise DD was only in it to get us to the EPL when MON was manager. I stupidly thought he got his shares and invested when we were on our arse in 94. I mean God forbid he wants us to live within our means and protect the future of the club.

  17. ....PFayr supports WeeOscar on

Deila made all the hood signings but not the rubbish ones

    He didn’t sign Wakaso,Guidetti,Tonev , Scepovic…..what about Berget ??

If he didn’t sign these players who did ?
