Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  2. Go tell the Spartim on

Even given our current team of “insert option here” we could at least win our home games, our away games are our achilles heel

  3. We have our work cut out, can’t see any way Fenerbace wont win the group.

Sydneytom, read it and weep :-)

    Transfers in 2015

    Fenerbahce

  4. Just as the Europa was a decent test and experience for Neil’s team so should this for Ronny’s team, playing in Istanbul in Fenerbahce’s stadium should be a testing and worthy experience for our Bhoys, playing against some very good players home and away should also add a lot to their kitbags..

There a few easy draws in Europe now, gone are the days of 9-0 victories over Eurominnows:))

  5. I heard he was dead on

Ajax are not what they were either.

They were put out of the CL by Rapid Vienna losing 3-2 at home.

They struggled to get into this stage only winning 1-0 on agg vs Jablonec who missed a penalty.

    They are rebuilding too.

Fenerbache have ”names” in their team but will they play and how seriously will they take the tournament?

Molde will be coming to the end of their season soon enough depending on when we play them.

I am not saying we are good enough to win the group or get out of it but we should be giving each of these sides a game in Glasgow at the least.

  7. The interesting thing about Ajax is that they have a develop and sell policy that sees them yo yo ing between the CL and EL.

I’m not sure what other factors cause that. I’d imagine they are run on a sustainable basis too, lose better players to German or English clubs or when their season starts.

I’m not sure how AQN reacted to CL failure my Dutch is not goot. Has their been cries to sack their manager?

This is a bit out of date on Ajax although it looks like the cycle is repeating.

If anyone wants an understanding of the issues affecting clubs like them and us have a read.

  8. Celtic Champs Elect on

Fantastic draw beat Ajax home and draw away beat Molde home and away beat Fener home and get beat away through to the next round COYBIG lets show the CL what they are missing at the unbeatable Celtic Paradise Park…

Is south of tunis still around not seen him post for a while

  9. Thought Molde was in Denmark. Just looked it up and it’s in the middle of the fjords in Norway!

Best hope is that Fenerbahce won’t try too hard.

  10. I heard he was dead on

If Fenerbache want it, they’ll win the group with the players they have.

Celtic should be looking for second place in this group depending on how the fixtures fall.

  11. I would hope our club and the government will be in touch with those in charge in the Dam to ensure no repeat scenes of the last debacle. Just need to look at the welcome we get elsewhere to know exactly who was primarily to blame the last time.

  12. embramike says "the Huns are Deid" on

Group is tough – but could have been a lot worse.

And we can rake in over £10m from European campaign if we can qualify for the last 32 by finishing in top 2 in this group. Not CL money but not chicken feed either.

Of course the doom merchants, nay sayers and trolls on here will point out the negatives, but there is no reason we cannot qualify, reestablish our European reputation and credibility, and let the players regain their confidence. A few quality additions wouldn’t go amiss mind you !

I will be there for the Thursday night European matches along with true Celtic fans, and now on to CP tomorrow and 3 points again St Johnstone – the last team to beat us at home. HH

  13. Turkish fans no problem with visiting Euro fans I have been told. They are not too keen on the English fans though. My mate, who is a massive Galatasaray fan has been on the phone to me.He says we will get gubbed here, but maybe win in Glasgow. He hopes we stuff them in both legs.

Should be an interesting last few days of the window. Then again, maybe not.

Super Coach from here to Istanbul,£25 return.Brilliant.

  14. And just to emphasise the point, these are the most expensive players signed by Turkish teams this window…..

    The most expensive transfers

    month player to m€

    Jul 15 Souza Fenerbahce 8

Jun 15 Simon Kjaer Fenerbahce 7.7

Aug 15 Ozan Tufan Fenerbahce 7

Jul 15 Robin van Persie Fenerbahce 6.6

    Jul 15 Nani Fenerbahce 6

  15. Be an interesting AGM during Europa league

PL. finances are great. We sold VVD and have money in bank everything is great

Fan. But we are getting pumped in Europe

PL. but we are stable and my bonus is getting paid :)))

Fan. But we are a football club

PL. shhh my pension is all that matters

  16. What a draw! It’s tough but if we perform to our best, we can qualify from this group.

Did Souness not make an a..e of himself on Fenerbahce centre circle? Perhaps an idea for a GB banner?

  17. mullet and co 2 on

Dear doctor. At least we might test this Celtic side with a Champions League lite style group… And pull a crowd? I’d imagine all 3 will take a reasonable support?

    Any dates yet?

  18. As to the matches –

Versus Ajax, capable of a win and a draw I think = 4 points.

Versus Fenerbahce, would expect tough games so maybe 1 loss and 1 draw = 1 point.

(Don’t travel well as someone mentioned but they will push us hard at home with the new recruits who have all experienced a high level of match play and crowd intensity)

Versus Molde, would expect us to have enough to win both games but not unless we step up obviously. = 6 points.

So many permutations but reckon 11 points is possible.

  19. Stringer Bell

Imagine spending all that dosh and not qualifying for the CL. Sheeshkabab.

The EL is where a team can grow to CL standard.

Our aim should be to recruit in next couple of days players who want to be part of that growth over 3 seasons not use Celtic as a one season stepping stone to the EPL.

Cut down the churn rate which might mean recruiting from home.

    Fortitude?

Aye,right. Is that the one where you take a boot in the baws and turn the other cheek?

I read a few weeks ago that you said something is expected from Resolution 12 next week,I have to say you can lecture us all you want on fortitude. Seems you’ve got loads of it.

Meantime,I’ll keep happily shafting. Pointing out the flaws. Not accepting anything below what we could,COULD,be,with a realistic approach to the potential of our fan base.

  21. I heard he was dead on

At this stage all we can ask for is that the club, players and management do their best in these matches and improve the performances.

At home we are still a difficult team for opposing sides to beat when we are on our game.

This is where the management team prove themselves or not.

We will have a better idea once the games start of how far Ronny Deila has taken us and can take us in the future.

It’s an opportunity for our young players to learn and develop for next season. Talk of winning this tournament is fanciful nonsense, using it to improve our players, team and management is not.

  22. mullet and co 2 on

I’d expect 4 points from Molde and the same again from the 4 games against the other two. Don’t think 8 points would be enough.

What’s Ronnys record like v Molde?

  23. What will be will be,

The worst draw in terms of the travelling support. Danger in Istanbul and Amsterdam and expensive in Norway. On the footballing side a difficult draw, will be a difficult one to qualify from but should be a good test for our young team.

My oldest bhoy wanted to go away to our first away European game together, I was hoping for Dortmund or Bilbao, maybe next time.

  27. Aye bobby. Fell off the bed with auildhead one there.

Wildest/ craziest football related atmosphere I ever experienced was @ a Fenerbahce v Galatasaray game .Before / during and after . Made games v the Deady Bears look like an afternoon down the Bowling club in comparison .

  30. Posters pointing to the Malmo game and saying we will be gubbed are neither clever or original. Yes if we play like we did in Malmo we will be hammered but we are a lot better then we showed this week, Its a tough group but the team has been offered a chance of redemption. I’m looking forward to the games with great anticipation, bring it on.
