Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. Probably in the minority on here but looking forward to heading to CP I a an hour or so. Hope Scott Allan gets a start and if we’re not playing VVD due to him leaving before Tuesday I hope Young O’Connell is given a start. Thought he did well last week, improved since his games last season.

  2. Here’s who I’m hoping to see in the flesh today

    Gordon

    Janko

    Virgil

    Boyata

    Izzy

    Brown

    Bitton

    Allen

    Griffiths

    Skepovic

    Armstrong

That’s what I’d like. What I think however is that Johansen will retain his place and Forrest will start, those 2 being at the expense of Allen and Skepovic.

As the ref misses a stonewall penalty for Arsenal…

Criticism, well intentioned and purposeful is an important formative mechanic in any growth of an association or body.

Therefore, let folk have their say, without trying to suppress debate.

PL must go. Ronny must go. Any order.

  4. As I have a cup of tea before heading for CO – let’s hope there are no ‘petted lips’ from Tuesday – we ‘draw a line in the sand’ and move forward.

There is a full season, with quality European matches, to look forward to.

If we believe in Ronny, and more importantly, if he believes in himself, he MUST stamp his authority all over this season.

There is no doubt that a young hungry squad is his aim – he deserves this season with no sniping – but he MUST convince all of us that HE has ALL the answers – let’s go HH

  5. Hope it’s

    Gordon

That’s not accurate at all mate. I’m a 50 year old Celtic supporter, the club has been the one constant in my life. I suspect a lot of the gripes are from Tims like me, who are just a little further down the line, in driving the thing that we need…………change.

It’s coming, has to. It’s just the number of disasters * we need to experience before it happens.

For what it’s worth I’ll be at the game today. But my optimism as a Celtic supporter is being drained from me as our club declines.

It’s not one person’s fault, but our leaders have to shoulder the blame for the apathy amongst the rank and file ?

Watch today, the stadium will have 15,000 in it at the final whistle, possibly less if we don’t perform or have a 2 goal lead.

The team on the park does not excite me, no footballer extraordinaire, a goalscoring hero if you like.

I nodded my head earlier, when a few predicted that VvD will be sold at the eleventh hour, with the club therefore “unable” to re-invest that money. That wee scenario has been a template for our transfer window torments.

    * football disasters

That’s my share certificate dropped through the letter box, I wonder if PL has signed up for the Dividend Re-investment Plan (DRIP) or does he take the cash – who’s the mug? not Pedro.

Might start taking the cash and treat myself to a pie and a pint.

Gary67. Agree re O’Connell – calm and solid performance last week – good shout to give him a game today. Need to build for future – Charlie is too slow and cubersome for any of the defensive positions, so no point in planning for him as CB either. Not impressed with Boyata so far – prefer Efe, and put Janko at RB.

Couple of years behind you but we share the same sentiment.

  10. Neganon – can you point me in the direction of PL being asked if he was involved and was indeed the architect of the five way agreement and the subsequent denial? He certainly wasn’t one of the 5.

Is there enough of a groundswell of disaffection among the support to drive for a real change i.e. a Celts For Change part 2 as it seems to me the unhappy posters on here have been unhappy for a long time with the club but I never see any real movement towards change from them.

Serious question as it’s difficult to tell from afar, if CQN was a barometer of the supports feelings I would imagine that change would be coming sooner rather than later.

  12. HT. Still down south in Manchester area. Reading back and caught your post about our incredible justice system. You will not be surprised to know that the promised reply from St Andrew’s House, made some four weeks ago, in response to my last letter on the OB Act has still not come through. Perhaps they are all on holiday or just hiding away from the truth. Keep up the good work.

  13. the glorious balance sheet BBC link to PL’s comments

That makes for deflating reading just as I step out the door for CP. It’s disgusting and insulting that he mentions Rangers and millions (again) especially after a Euro defeat. The board detractors could have a field day on those comments alone, does he pine for an even more unlevel playing field?

It sounds to me that, they are clinging to the hope that a suitable bid for VVD won’t arrive over the weekend. I steadfastly refute that Tyler Blackett on loan, is the cover for the sale of VVD before Tuesday, it’s what the tabloid SMSM want us to believe.

  15. I suppose the closing of this transfer window will give the Celtic support a clear idea of how much their input and desires is valued by our custodians.

I suspect most will be disappointed.

  16. HENKE on 29TH AUGUST 2015 8:28 AM

My two cents worth are that Celtic are not an out-and-out Champions League club (I wish we were). If you compare our income from TV and league success to teams from other countries, and also our lack of debt, what makes anyone think we should be in the CL every year? A sense of entitlement, because we’re big in Scotland, because we won the European Cup all those years ago?

Financially, we’re not that big. CL participation is an aspiration, not an expectation.

Added to the financial limitations, is what John Collins roughly said: Celtic do not face strong enough opposition on a regular basis, to properly prepare them for matches such as Tuesday’s.

We’re a gargantuan fish in a very small bowl.

    A bit late catching up.

Don’t give us the weak opposition crap. Were this the case in the absence of THEM we should have been lifting everything in sight.

And don’t try and tell me that teams like Malmo and Maribor enjoy La Liga, Serie A, and Bundesligia type opposition week in and week out.

The truth is that for whatever reason Celtic does not fully maximise its assets.

To much money squandered trying to spread the jam thin on Pukkis, Amidos etc instead of occassionaly thinking outside the box and investing in quality.

Agree with you there, my mates in Scotland usually blab a bit about FC not PLC but I don’t sense any real appetite for change from them and my best mate always says “you been on CQN again?”

    Not universally liked CQN:))

Aye that much we know TET, I’m trying to ascertain if there is as much unhappiness in the support as there is on here.

Tuesday was a disaster to watch but had we won would there be so much noise about the Bhoy from Man Utd and Ryan Christie deals or would we be saying, Nice one Ronny nice one Son??

Been very heavy reading on here the last few days.

    Hope yer well Amigo.

Corkcelt it is laughable to excuse PL as simply the man who executes a strategy. As CEO it is lawwells job to set the strategy and agree it with the board. It’s his baby.

And boy is he handsomely rewarded for that. I mean last year PL got a massive bonus. It was even 100k over what he was contractually entitled for. Wow how’s that for corporate governance?

It’s pl who runs the club and is rewarded for this crap. DD agrees cos for him it’s all about the money. He has already told you that he hates the Celtic support and loves the Huns.

Did DD actually say these things?

Difficult to gauge, most I think “vote” silently, by just not going. Nor I’d venture that CQNers are representative of the Celtic support.

The poster Latchford mentioned earlier about apathy in his household. Same in my house, neither of my two boys (15 and 19) WANT to go any-more.

Root and branch change needed at the club to rekindle things.

Personally I don’t believe we have experienced the depths as yet, whereby Celtic supporters will force change.

Thanks mate appreciate your balanced answer, my nephew is 21 now and him and his Dad stopped going years ago, there reason was the football was crap, he’s recently come back around a bit but I think him and his mates would rather watch EPL or Spanish than Celtic.

In the spirit of proper debate, which you claim to seek, perhaps you consider how you address other posters and give the courtesy of the title they use themselves. As before, my support lies with those who support the club. That does not entail I don’t wish for improvement. Perhaps, you should actually read what is written and not jump to attack and try to demean others in the process.

  24. CROFTCELT on 29TH AUGUST 2015 12:50 PM

Well done to the genuine Celtic supporters who will be attending today’s game to support their team and club. Good to see that real supporters can rise above the negative barbs of those whose mindset and design seems to be simply one of harming the club. Everyone wants improvement and progress – non support will not help to achieve that.

    Nor will blind unquestioning loyalty.

At the risk of being accused of being a shit stirrer.

We have a Board obsessed with fiscal prudence.

Just how many non football staff were on this week’s jolly to Malmo?

Thing is, is that Celtic’s fault or the boards fault? I don’t think there’s anything we can realistically do to change peoples opinion of Scottish football.
