Ajax, Fenerbahce, Molde for Celtic

980

It’s a return to to seed Ajax, which is a good football draw, although the Ajax fans and Amsterdam police make it an unwelcome tie for other reasons.

Fenerbahce lost their Champions League qualifier to Shakhtar Donetsk before beating Greek club Atromitos in the Europa League play-off round. There were no easy teams in pot three, Fenerbahce are about par for the group.

Molde beat Dinamo Zagreb and Standard Liege, so deserve some respect, they will fear no one in this competition.

Happy with the draw, it could have been a whole lot more difficult but as always, we have to arrive prepared as there are no hiding places in Europe.

GOLFERS!

There’s a chance to win a round of golf for four of you at the magnificent Aberdour course, scene of the annual CQN Open, for £1. Taggsybhoy has provided this opportunity, to raise funds to support the Celtic Foundation’s work. If you want to cheer yourself up after a hard week, read about the Foundation’s work here.

But after you’ve read that, get onto ebay here and enter the raffle. You’re even allowed to win it for a friend, so pile in.

A box full of backpacks, pencils and cups for Malawi just arrived at my office (thank you) ahead of tomorrow’s collection at the Celtic Way before the game. Remember to bring along your old backpacks, pencils and handtowels if you have any.

  1. Some insightful posts since Tuesday. Haven’t posted myself due to a mixture of disappointment and wanting to collect my thoughts.

Agree with the view that we need to draw a line in the sand. I hope we see a couple of changes – perfect chance for Scott Allan to show what he can do against a normally well organised opposition, and I think there is a consensus that Stuart Armstrong deserves a more central role.

Pleased about move for Ryan Christie – huge potential.

The encroachment by the English Premiership, is insidious, deliberate in my opinion too.

My youngest’s school gets an annual invite to Man City. The Premiership TV coverage is overwhelming. You ever had a shot of a PS4 OR xBOX football game ? Try and go Celtic, players are slow and poor……….

I went to see Barcelona play Valencia last season. The Ryanair flight 3 days after the match was full of people who had took in the game. Same for the adjacent Dublin flight.

  3. Do we have a director of football? A person who looks after what happens on the pitch, scouting, player development, fitness etc. Someone who is given a budget to run the football side of things, not a manager or head scout, but someone who they report to. Let PL look after the financial side outside of the football ops, let him sign the sponsorship deals, sell the corporate boxes and prawm sandwiches. We need a top football man who knows the game inside and out.

Aye that much we know TET, I’m trying to ascertain if there is as much unhappiness in the support as there is on here.

Tuesday was a disaster to watch but had we won would there be so much noise about the Bhoy from Man Utd and Ryan Christie deals or would we be saying, Nice one Ronny nice one Son??

The point is that we did not win against a side that a lot of people on here considered to be very poor.

Even worse a Celtic team was accused, without any great rebuttal, of bottling it.

A goalscorer, hero if you like, would go some way to re-capturing the missing excitement.

The lack of fight in the team in Sweden really alarmed me – Celtic is no place for feint hearts.

Of course these things are symptoms, not the cause.

I would drop Jo Hansen and play Armstrong in his position,I fell this is Armstrong true position,he is a clever footballer and a far better passer of the ball than Jo Hansen, who for all his energy brings very little in end product.

Moving Armstrong more central would allow Allan to have a run of games as well,I feel this would allow us to pass the ball far better and to feet.

Don’t know much about Allan but from what I’ve read, threading killer passes through defenders is meant to be one of his strengths. Some of Johansen’s passing has been abysmal of late, so it’s a no brainer for me.

  9. Allan’s passing has been against teams that haven’t been defending deep and in numbers, he’ll find playing for Celtic that it’s much harder to thread a ball through 8-9 players in front of him

  10. I heard he was dead on

Gordon, Janko, Boyata, van Dijk, Izaguirre, Brown, Bitton, Commons, Rogic, Mackay-Steven, Griffiths

Mate of mine went to Malmo. An old git like me.He was at Xamax away / he was at Artmedia away etc..He says that Tuesday night is the only time a Celtic team / a Celtic performance caused him to feel angry .He knows the restraints that Celtic face .He has no delusions about Celtic being world beaters .He has no sense of entitlement .He does not expect to win every game etc etc – but – what he watched in Malmo verged on the unacceptable..Spoke with him yesterday re going to Amsterdam / Istanbul – he said no – !

Sad to say I know many Big Tims who just don’t go anymore for one reason or another, I don’t think that can be laid at the clubs door but putting a good exciting team on the park would absolve them from that responsibility.

Could we better aye I think so, can we deliver that, not sure anymore..

The soul of the game has been lost to the money men.

It is no longer a great spectator sport.

Those fans taking flights to see a game in Spain says it all.

It is now merely a well marketed product.

The historical inherited support is dwindling rapidly.

If the choice was a hollywood blockbuster verse a local student film most people would choose the hollywood one.

Self interest is a huge factor in the destruction of the once beautiful game and particularly in Scotland.

I watch American football here and it’s a great tv sport.

Was friendly with a few NYGiants players and they gave me tickets to a few matches.

It was pretty boring live with the occasional exciting moment.

I realised how tv made it a more exciting spectacle than it actually was with constant replays and different angles filling in the monotony with the select few exciting moments.

Football is exactly the same with the over hyped EPL being a classic example.

The SPL is different with poor coverage and bias commentators demeaning the games to the general detriment.

They have done more to bolster EPL among the young than all of Sky’s millions.

  14. StarryP

    Good thanks.

I would have been over the moon had we done the biz against Malmo, but it wouldn’t have changed my opinion that wee need to be a bit more flexible with our recruiting policy.

Can you imagine going into the games against Real and PSG with our defence, it’s getting to the stage that scottish teams are having a go for it.

My first and foremost thought is not to lose a match, and for that we need a defence.

And I am delighted we have signed SA, and poss the boy Christie, can’t have enough good young fellas.

That would sum up exactly how I felt on Tuesday, the lack of fight made me ask myself what’s the effing point in me losing the nut and getting mental when the players don’t give a peking duck:)

I ended up just kind of staring at the screen and thinking this ain’t good enough..

C G is a great keeper but he shld have told his defenders at the 2nd goal at C P. Im coming for this ball and im goin to punch it to Brigton cross.

  21. Paul 67 made reference to Martin O’Neil’s teams and how he wanted big strong teams that could defend, get the ball in the box and players who knew what to do with it once it got there, it seems simple enough but its right on the money. Start with the middle of the team, front to back, Keeper(check), commanding centre back ( ), Big strong Centre Forward ( ). Two players needed to start the rebuild.

As for VVD, get rid of him ASAP, this is a disruption to the team the longer this goes on

It sometimes feels like a form of cultural imperialism. The ‘big’ countries and ‘strong leagues’ are showing us natives how it should be done sort of thing. And here in Ireland the EPL junkies like nothing more than to regurgitate the line about the one horse race, the poor standard (even at the height of the MON era)……. I’d rather watch non league football than the over paid prima donna’s of the EPL. I’ll probably watch very little Champions League that doesn’t involve Celtic because group stage matches are generally boring and only second leg knockouts have any type of excitement.

    Maybe I’m just a grumpy old man……
